Sorry - this isn't really a whinge - just a query. I notice that the information given over there on the left - including the section "About Us" is still the original "stuff" from Mark. With so many new members joining every day surely this is misleading? Is Symbios trying to hide something here? Even the "Important Announcement" thread hasn't been made a sticky.
It don't know why but it makes me uncomfortable that the "outside" should still be the old SH owned and run by Mark - with the "inside" designed and run commercially. It just feels to me like something is being hidden. Like Symbios want the site to continue to look like a community built and run site rather than a commercial enterprise - which is is now - whether you like it or not.
Does anyone else feel the same?

Having been part of a "takeover" in the RL I can just imagine what it is like behind the scenes. If I was a mod I don't think I would still be around. I think the fact that you guys still mod VOLUNTARILY shows a dedication to this community above and beyond the call of duty!

So - reading between the legal lines - it's free to register...but if you wanna do anything else it's gonna cost you. But we won't charge you for adult minder - or whatever it's called.

;)in keeping with the creepy bumlick theme, i personally would like to applaud admin for clarifying the whole "is this a free site" issue.
clear as mud! free to register is NOT the same thing as free to use at all. some of the stuff still on the site is misleading, and if i was a genuine newbie reading stuff that was obviously being a little economical with the truth, i might have the odd trust issue with the site as a whole.

Most sites now blah blah blah as free. Salt needed, just a pinch. Fine line between truth and reality it would seem ? Server cost go bonkers ? But bandwidth on isp accounts are doubling (at least) year by year ? I'm not sure sure the figures add up..... But rest assured that here, if you post anything the hard working mods don't regard as worthy or it's been done before (even if you ain't' seen it cos you're new) it will be locked, blocked or just plain dissed. Other than that it's well worth your hard earned dollar.... No disrespect to the mods here as rules are rules and they are just making the site a nice place to be....... :arrow: :arrow: :arrow:

I think I have a good idea what Symbiosis's strategy is with this site, and I reckon they're going to be pretty successful at turning it into a profitable business. The most difficult thing about getting a viable online community up and running is getting a critical mass of members, and they were given that ready made.
Unfortunately I doubt many of the original members will still be here at that point, but heh, that's life - maybe a new free SH equivalent will have sprung up by then. Sad as it is to see a what many people consider a second home "desecrated" like this, nobody forces you to use the forum, and nobody's made you pay anything so far...

I rarely consider things as being 'free', as there is always some kind of cost involved. At the very least revenue is gained by the charging of usage of the telecomms lines. Obviously anyone logged into SH contributes in this way. Although not as a direct charge per user, but it is all grabbed and calculated by and for the telecomms companies.
Many organisations start with a benevolent ethos and have people with exceptionally unique abilities and character. But very often these qualities don't mix with hard nosed profit driven business. Which accounts for the exodus/ minimal appearance of several worthy people. However there are many who have ceased whinging and are now happily using the full range of services available on the site.
I think when people step into SH its similar to going to a club that insists on tie and collar. You comply with the code and behave accordingly. So I don't think that is going to be lost.
