I did the Aktins diet a few years ago and yes it does work but only in the short term. It's not a good diet ( too much fat and not enough fibre ) and you end up with stinky breath due to the ketones in your system.
If you're serious about losing weight, the best way is to join a class ( Weight Watchers is the best ) You will get the support of a weekly meet, helpful tips and advice for healthy eating and it's easier to stick to with longer lasting benefits. I lost 2 stone last year with them and it stayed off for the most part ( me and my hubby splitting caused me to dive back into the chocs again but still most of the weight has stayed off )
If you're self conscious about sitting in a room full of women, you can join online. I found the WW forums a tremendous help too. That's where you'll get your inspiration and support if you need it but doing it alone takes more self control than joining a class.
Whatever you decide to do, steer clear of the 'fad' diets, they're fine for a quick fix but not in the long term. And Good Luck ! You'll feel much better for it when you start seeing the lbs drop off
What Sassy said above, Atkins is only a VERY short term answer and not a good way to eat for your health, and if you have a sandwich for lunch at the moment, you can forget the bread and just eat the meat filling on Atkins!
Slimming world is an idea plan, especailly if you like eating lots of fruit and vegetables. It can take a while to get your head around the plan, but nothing is banned and you can eat what they class as 'free food' to your hearts content! They also do an on-line service.
Just bear in mind that the inventor of this diet died before making it to the average age  It doesn't do you any favours in the long run.
better to eat anything you normally would just not as much, Drink more water, it's filling, low on calories and good for your skin. and excercise.
Crash diets teach your body to stock up when the goings good so it just piles back on. Slow and steady wins this race.
saying all that I don't drink enough water and don't get time to exercise like I should but as a single dad I get to run around enough to keep me fit.
Well, however he died, he never made it to the average age. Which say's something to me. Karma ? Hmmm, Still I guess he's thin now.
Did you see the horizon program on this diet a while back? Basically they came to the conclusion that its a pile of pants, yes it works short term, but only because eating high amounts of protein fools you into thinking you're not hungry, not because your burning more calories (this is horizon talking not me). Any diet that you need to take suppliments for isn't a balanced diet. Reduce the proccessed foods you eat, eat more fruit and veg, reduce the fats (but not completely, you need them too) and do more excercise. There is no quick fix, best advice I can give is not to think of it as a diet, you need to permanently change your eating habbits or you'll be back to square one after coming off your 'diet'.
Hope that didn't sound too preachy, good luck with it.

My advise would be:
Make sure you have breakfast to kick start your metabalism - cereal or toast. Try to go for a high fibre cereal or wholemeal or granary type bread for toast.
If you need a snack before lunch have some fruit or vegtable sticks.
DON'T buy pre-made sandwiches, they are usually really really high in calories. Try to take your own, again, going for wholemeal or granary bread, bagals or for fewer calories still, a wholemeal wrap.
Have lean meat or fish with loads of steamed veg or salad.
Snack on fruit, veg and low-fat yoghurts.
Replace as many drinks as possible with water. Limit alcohol.
It may be wise to take a calcium supplement if you are reducing the amount of dairy you would normally have. This will reduce the risk of oestoeporosis (brittle bones) in later life.
Take some excersise. If you use public transport to get to work, try walking partway. Try to go for a walk at lunch time, even if it is only for ten minutes, or to a different part of the building and back.
This does work, but if you are used to eating processed foods it can take a week or so to stop craving takeaways and chocolate etc.

I remember being really concerned when my dad started reading about the Atkins diet.
I know the theory is that years ago we didn't have processed carbohydrates in our diet and we all ate lots of meat.
What it doesn't say is that the average life span was much shorter then and we have no record of how many people died of heart disease or where diabetic etc.
IMO cutting fruit & veg out of your diet cannot be healthy and you don't have to be a dietician to know that.
just my 2 pence worth lol,
eat at an hour after u wake up to boost your metabolism......go for simple carbs ie cereal..
3 hours later have a snack (fruite is good)
3 hours later have lunch.........complex carbs and protien,
3 hours later have a snack again.........also fruit,
2 hours later have a work out .. straight after have simple carbs and protien (preferably in a drink form) simple carbs and protien is need for your muscles to rebuild straight after a work out....
1 hour later dinner .....complex carbs and protien
just remeber sray clear of simple carbs.......apart from after workouts......drink pleanty of water as its used in alomost all of the vital processes of the body..........
following this diet will ultimatly give you energy and weight loss as long as u dont take the piss with portion sizes
1 other thing to mention is that.........if you carry on with cookin your own meals and avoiding the simple carbs and fatty foods....fter a couple of weeks you`l not only feel bettewr but wont want to indulge at all in the foods that we all seem to crave, you`l enjoy the new foods your eating so much more as well...........also i know atkins is bad....but still try to keep a nice portion of protien on your plate........30% of the calories in protien are used ....digesting it!
