Autumnal depression

I've just been out to get logs-there's a nip in the air. The young dog foxes are screaming to establish territory, the swallow's nest in the eaves is cold and empty-my little friends disappeared for African climes a couple of weeks ago-, the bats have gone to sleep, no insects are fllitting through the night air. On my way home today I noticed the trees jettisoning their leaves, a sea of dying foliage, the winter ducks are beginning to arrive, it is dark when i leave for work in the morning, and dark when I get home, the grass is growing but slowly, the ewes in the fields show the tell-tale yellow rumps of their first 'raddling'......
My point?: I hate the Autumn!! All is death and decay. My friends tell me it is the beginning of new life, a fresh start to the cycle of life, a sea of New England like beauty...maybe, but it depresses me terribly. I long for the Spring, which seems so far away. Winter looms like death to the aged.
Does anyone else hate the Autumn as I do?
Autumn always feels exciting to me, the beginning of the new season. As exciting as Spring, but that could be cos I know xmas is just around the corner
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
It's absolutely fascinating the way nature shuts itself down for a few months. Not so much as death and decay ..... more moulting cool Animals getting fat and fluffed out. Trees losing their leaves so they don't blow over when it gets windy, and boy do they undress in style - fantastic time to walk through parts of the forest, it's ablaze with colour. Then their leaves dropping and turning into compost for the following years growth. The grass slows up and I don't get told off by my parents when they visit, cos I haven't cut it for two days rolleyes
Indoors, mmmmmm the heating goes on, giving such a cosy feel to the place when you come in from the new chill. The anticipation of candles and insense sticks taking us through winter ...... they just don't have the same effect mid summer confused
But then we get February mad what a bluddy awful month that is!!!!! It's grim, grey, dank and usually just bluddy miserable. Never seem to get proper weather in February, just bluddy drizzle :x Gimme snow, wind, rain, hail any other winter weather - but not drizzle evil I always think spring is round the corner, cos it gets lighter ......... but it isn't, it's just stays grey

Well said MISSCHIEF - I echo your sentiments entirely... I love to see the leaves change, the smell of the hedgerows and woods at this time of year. I adore Hallowe'en and seeing the children enjoy themselves. Bonfire Night is a favourite also and not long after it's my birthday... and then the countdown to Christmas... *happy sigh*
February however (shudder)... we should all hibernate and snuggle up in bed with our favourite person/s.
I wish i was as lucky as you, Agri, to be working outside. I love the outdoors, I don't mind any weather, except with wind! I leave the house, walk 7 paces to the car, drive to work, walk 100 yards to the office and then all again going home. If I lived closer, i would walk to work. The odd time where by necessity I have to walk anywhere, I relish it, especially out of town. would I swap with you? Definitely!!

I dislike the winter too. Dark mornings and dark nights.
On the plus side I have just started my new semester at uni and I am raring to go :bounce:
Me too Agricola. Its as if I can feel the need to close down and hibernate. I actually dont mind autumn too much as like others have said the leaves and plants still look wonderful changing colour, but its the endless darkness that I really dislike. I seem to come back to life in the spring. Making the most of the days when the sun is shining is a bonus. Yesterday was gorgeous and when its like that, I want to be outside and grasp any bits of the sunlight. Today I intend being out in the garden clearing all the fallen leaves. They fall in bathfuls not bucket falls out there lol. What I hate more is when the cows in the field behind me are no longer there as I love seeing them peering over the hedge. So I will celebrate any days left of sunlight !!!!!!!!!!
Hate it Hate it Hate it ......
Time to reach for the the anti-histamines and inhalers sad I have an allergy to mould spores  throughout the year it's fine and I rarely notice any problems but Autumn brings a whole new set of problems, air pollution at it's greatest due to raking leaves and bonfires, kids kicking up leaves :(
No not fun :( roll on sprnig (since we can't rely on a good covering of snow to kill everything off)
find autumn is a worse time , am a jeans and t shirt guy so love summer. Also the depression rates go up in winter, seasonally adjusted disorder, so time to get those light boxes out
I must admit - it all depends on the weather on the day.
If it's dry and not bitterly cold, I love to go walking. To see the trees in their autumn colours varying from yellow, gold, thru to deep russet reds is wonderful. Crunching through the fallen leaves hand in hand with someone you are fond of is wonderful.
I love each season we have, but I am sad that here in Lancs we only seem to have wet winters these days instead of crisp snow and glittering frost.
Come for a walk with me one day Agricola and we'll have a fight with the fallen leaves!
Hugs, Alex x x x x x
I love the autumn.I'm a fisherman and to see my river starting to display her beautiful autumn plumage is a joy to chill in the air on a bright autumnal day is one of my lifes' great birthday is on November 5th so it may be to do with happy memories as a kid.

I'm very much with Alex on this one, it depends greatly on the weather on the day, one of my favourite things is to go walking hand in hand with someone special, kicking up the the leaves as you go. But today as I'm looking out through the patio doors, the sky is grey, the wind is cold & it really doesn't inspire me to walk out through the door sad
I just love the Autumn. biggrin All the smells like Pine trees, wafting through the air ,,,,,,,,,,,,ahhhhhhh !!!
Wood piles stacked high waiting for the 5th November. The evening comes and your all wrapped up warm and if your like me have a big red nose. lol
Watching the colours changing day by day, watching nature getting ready for the winter.
Looking forward to all the excitement of Christmas and the smells.
Winter I don't like as it seems never ending and bleak.
But I know that Spring will appear and all the awakening begins again, as if to stretch from a long sleep.
How nice to see agricola posting again - and as poetic as ever.
I can't say that Autumn depresses me. As others have said, I love to go walking - even it is a bit chilly. It's a good excuse for a steaming bowl of soup or a large brandy when you get back indoors. On a day like today, pale watery sunshine strained through trees that are becoming increasingly sparsely clad is a real joy. The early evenings are a bit of a bind, but it's all part of the normal cycle.
Several people have mentioned Bonfire Night and I share their sentiments. Hot dogs, soup and mulled wine outside while the children are playing with sparklers and watching the sky light up. Wonderful.
The skeletal trees of winter can look a little bleak, but I even find beauty in those - stark, but nevertheless beautiful. The only thing I don't really like is bone chilling cold with a wind that gets inside your ears. Otherwise I love to go walking on a blustery day - it blows the cobwebs away.
So agricola, I am sorry that you get depressed in Autumn but you know where I am my dear friend. Perhaps a pint of Shropshrie's finest by a roaring fire in a proper country inn will help to cheer you up. Give us a call and the two of us would love to see you.

Suddenly feeling thirsty - can't imagine why redface
I'd go along with Alex and Lilacgem. It does depend on the day. A crisp cold moring can be inspiring but a grey miserable November day can really get you down - even if it is the month of my birthday.
Don't you think its weird the way it used to be OK to dislike things and now they tell you your sick - Seasonal Affected Disorder - pardon the pun but is that SAD or what? lol
Its a crazy world we live in!
Agrricola, sounds you like you live somewhere that I would appreciate, as I am keen on wildlife & spend quite a bit of time in the countryside.............. but live in dull suburbia. I love all the seasons because I like to see the changes. I also love to see different weather, although strong wind irritates me & drizzle is rather boring.
I particularly enjoy walking in Northumberland, & a crisp, cold, clear day, with frost or snow underfoot, although getting there can be a bit of a challenge & a gamble on frosty, icy minor roads. Before heading home I often drop in on one of my relatives for a chat & a coffe, & then back for tea. Its nice to be pleasantly knackered, being able to feel in my legs that I've had a good day out, & the next time I use the car, the mud sprayed up the sides reminds me of where I have been. I HATE having a clean car, & usually make it my mission to get it covered in mud as soon as possible. biggrin
All the seasons are wonderful in their own way, only trouble is I've seen too many of all of them wink
Seriously though, the change is so refreshing, I'm not sure I'd like to live in any constant climate.
I try to be circumspect about the weather (have to living in Scotland  ) and remember a line from one of Robert Heinlein's books (Time Enough For Love I think, but I may be wrong) "You can't argue with the weather".

We're like quite a few people on here and love walking on a crisp autumn morning. Autumn also reminds me of when my son was small and we used to walk through the 'crunchy, munchy leaves'. We also like the smell of the fireworks in the air on bonfire night, for some reason it always makes me want to eat baked potatoes confused

Never thought I would explain why I get hayfever symptoms late in year, thanks Calista smile
As for autumn, all benefits of winter without as much darkness... Benefits being snuggling up under a blanket with someone you love...
