AVG Anti Virus won't initialize. Help needed

My AVG Free Anti Virus won't initialize.
The problem started about a week ago when it refused to download updates. I uninstalled it and re-downloaded it off the internet. It was up to date at the time but subsequently still won't download updates.
Now everytime I boot my laptop I get a message window pops up which says "Could not initialize AVG Anti Virus kernel interface. Application cannot run".
Also I've found that the desktop shortcut will not open AVG when I double click on it (nothing happens).
Has anyone got any idea what the problem is?
Thanks.

Reply: Did your free avg program come with your Laptop as a bundle? If so how long ago? if it was more than 12 months ago it sounds like you "Free subcription" has ended hence you being unable to download updates from the server. My advise is to either buy a new anti virus disk or if you want to be really sneaky re registar your avg with different user details(i.e different e-mail add and name for instance) this will give you another years use. wink
hope this helps
Tx
Wish i could help eager, i've got AVG as its one of the best anti virus products available but not had a problem with it so far. As a guess, could it be another anti virus program on your pc thats interfering with it? Or maybe if you try a system restore to a date before the problem started may help?
further input to my last comments, It could be bloody spyware effecting you machine, in this case they are many "Spyware eliminaters" about to download free. One of these being Noadware. Type into any search engine to be directed. (sorry mods if I have mentioned a product's name, not sure if thats allowed confused )

Yeah Steph could well be right, sorry to throw so many answers. Some say I love to confuss biggrin hope you sort is xxxx

Chck you haven't inadvertantly changed your screen resolution or colour depth hun, both of these will have a tremendous impact on the size of a displayed page. I would recommend setting it at 1028 X 768

oooo thanks babes passionkiss done it :bounce:
Hiya ES :-) yeah what has been said above . Download the latest version of the free build from their site . Delete the old one first then do a fresh install . We had it happen a while back ( quite a while) and that seemed to do the trick . Then maybe set your updates to auto on the preferences.

It won't delete from my installed programmes when I try to uninstall it.
I've tried downloading it again from the free grisoft site but it won't do that either.
dunno
I tried deleting the programme in safe mode and it wouldn't do that either.
I can't access the AVG control panel. The desktop shortcut won't open AVG, nor will going into start and all programmes. The icon for AVG's disappeared off my my screen at the bottom right corner.
Kitty's coming tomorrow and hopefully will be able to sort it, but I was sort of hoping I'd be able to do it and show her how clever I've been! smile :)
Thanks Steph. kiss I'll give them a try.

Have you tried running trend microsystems Housecall on the system see if it has been caused by a virus getting through? You could also try Panda's Active scan online scanners (they have picked up viruses that AVG have missed on mine in the past wink )
Sort of that dunno hun
Steph

or

Two possibilities
1/ You have a virus that was specifically written to attack McAfee and Norton Antivirus engines and disable them (possible if you havn't got the latest defs)
2/ The DLL link to the operating system is corrupt.
Either way, the only way is to remove the software. If this cant be done (even in safe mode) you will have to disable the programme from starting by using MSCONFIG and unticking anything to do with McAfee, Network Associates and Virusscan.
Resart the PC and try an uninstall. If not, simply erase the folders Network associates, Viruscan & McAfee from Programme files and Network associates/McAfee from programme filecommon files (abbove paths depend on version of McAfee).
Then do an online scan as mentioned above. After clear, reinstall or go for another virus engine such as AVG.
Thought the problem was with ES's AVG installation dunno

CRAP.... I'll read the thread next time redface
Ok, scrap everything about McAFee & Norton, do as mentioned but substitute AVG and Grisoft in place of McAfee & Norton.
Sorry, I had teh same problem with McAfee, hence my brain cell went into auto mode.

I think ultimately practically all Anti virus/Internet security packages can cause grief from time to time, I know my installation of Norton currently is mad , unless someone can point me in the direction of a good (as in it does what it's supposed to ) package that actually stays up and behaves itself.

Hi, ES.
First....I recommend you this
It`s free, German ;) and no probs with updates. With Sygate FF....allmost full protection (almost, coz U never know... biggrin )
Your problem could be:
1. some kind of spy/adware.
2. after this bloody update - mistake in regedits.
or....
3. system going to die ;)
I can give you some advices, but...It`s really hard to explain everything about regedits...and other PCstaff.
The best way is waiting for Kitty.

Thank you everyone for your contributions here, the ideas, links, etc,.
Kitty's here now, spent 10 mins on it and has deleted the installed AVG programme by some stealthy techie magic which involved typing in lines of text in safe mode.
50% of the problem's resolved but it still won't download all the new programme off the grisoft website. When she's sorted it tomorrow passionkiss I'll let you know what the problem appears to have been, so it may help others in the future.
ES
Ok.....we had to delete the grisoft folder in safe mode - would only work through dos though confused
Then, boot normally, run the AVG setup file and it detected the installation, so selected uninstall.
Rebooted and reinstalled and fingers crossed it seems to be working.
