I started this as an answer to another post, but I would like peoples' opinions. The term BBW has always confused me a bit - I'm taking it means Big Beautiful Woman?? If so, does it mean that the woman is beautiful because she's big, or because she's big and considers herself beautiful?? If the latter is this case, then I find it a bit arrogant. What about all the Big Ugly Women with nice personalities? A beautiful person is a beautiful person, no matter what size they are. The media is always banging on about "real women" who all seem to be size 14 plus - I'm currently a size 8 (not through choice) and get jolly narked that I'm not considered a "real woman", even though I've got boobies and all the other bits, just not as much!!!
I will now increase my chocolate intake to compensate.
I always thought it meant Big Busty Women!

I'm sure its Big Beutiful Women. I lose the terminology only for the simple fact ppl will know you're a larger lady. You are right it is a bit up yourself to think just because you're a larger lady you are automatically beautiful, maybe big busty women is a better way to put it.....but then you havent necessarily got big busts!!!! Its a dilemma!! LOL!

you are a twat markz good job you know it rolleyes
like i said elsewhere, i use the term as its a widely known term so people know you are a big girl, better than saying fat lass and just because i use it doesnt mean i am saying slim people arent beautiful.
beauty is many things not just asthetics, me media has a way of making everyone feel inadequate, you say it makes out you arent a 'real woman' due to your size, magazines, newspapers, even down to tv programmes have ways of making us all feel a bit down about ourselves for one reason or another, be it fat, thin, not white enough teeth, wearing glasses, surgery
Doesn't the term come from a website being formed years ago purely for larger women who 'want to be seen as beautiful'? Any why not. I think it generates from the fact that because you are large doesn't mean you cannot be beautiful. Take Dawn French for example.. she is large and really is a beautiful woman.
I really think that the term BBW isn't an arrogant way of larger women thinking they are better looking than anyone else but more of a confident boosting term.
Forest, small boobs and a size 8 doesn't make you any less beautiful than the larger lady. kiss

The terminology section here says Big Beautiful Woman ;-)
And says:
"BBWs (acronym for "Big Beautiful Women") are the focus of a vaguely-defined, fairly widespread Internet subculture with interests ranging from size acceptance to force-feeding. Generally defined as an attractive, self-confident "woman of size", the BBW is the subject of much veneration by so-called fat admirers (FA). Exceptionally large women are called SSBBWs, with the SS standing for Super-Size."
I must admit I've always had a problem with labels, this one is no exception. Like they say - beauty is in the eye of the beholder - not the person labeling themselves.

I'm surprised at Wikipedia wrongly using the term "acronym". Acronym means a set of initials which form a pronouncable word (like NATO), not just any old set of initials.
I don't like the term BBW, but I acknowledge that some women are okay with.
Me...i just like women  :rascal:

We're told every day through the media in its myriad of forms that small and thin is far more acceptable than large And well lets face it fat.
The issues given over to people being overweight etc are far more numerous than those given to those that are thin, or even more rarely underweight. Society throws far more nastiness over and at the larger person. And i 'suppose' this is sort of fair if you think alomg the lines of right height and right weight ratio's. Well if someone falls into that category then they are fitting into the socially acceptable mould and abiding by the rules etc.
Though of course underweight people have problems. Wouldnt deny that for a moment or think that they should be overlooked of course not. But lets face it they dont get the social slapping that bigger ppl do.
Me? I think BBW's big beautiful women is a great term to use. Beautiful? Whoever said that it was coined for the appearance and nothing else i dont remember that bit.
Sometimes too have a place to go to socialise with those that are alike is to be relieved of the stresses that being oversized in the world presents a larger person with.

Me too
I like women, large OR small though if I had to tick boxes, I have to say I'm more attracted to a curvier lady than a slim one, much the same as I'm more attracted to taller guys over shorter guys, slimmer ones over muscley(sp?) ones.
At the end of the day, it's the personality that gets my attention rather than the size label. A confident lady can be very sexy no matter what size she is wink
Is there a term for very-over-weight-but-not-quite-on-the-fat-list-though-I-feel-fuckin-enormous-sometimes-but-I'm-mostly-quite-happy-with-myself-and-let's-face-it-if-I-really-wanted-to-lose-weight-i-would-have-done-so-by-now?
We all have labels whether we like it or not and I don't think any of them are really meant to be derogatory to those that don't fit that group - and I mean on here, not out in the stoopid media world.
Why should anyone be bothered what anyone else labels themselves as dunno

To me it's not arrogant at all if a woman describes herself as BBW.
The term BBW is actually used by a lot of larger women for the complete opposite reason of saying "Aren't I gorgeous". Saying you are BBW from the start serves as a 'warning' to let others know that they aren't a size 10/12 and to move along quickly if that's what they are after.
Then of course there are those women who do understand that big can be beautiful and are completely comfortable and happy with their size. Why can't they say that without appearing arrogant? You get plenty of profiles of size 10 people that claim they are sexy and attractive - no difference.
My final comment on this is... Fern Britton! :inlove:

I have to admit to being one of those blokes who thought BBW stood for Big'n'Busty.
Whenever I see someone described as BBW, I think 'comfortable' - comfortable to look at, comfortable to be with - and comfortable is pretty nice.
As for skinny chicks - well, they're pretty nice too - and as irresistably!

 I have in the past used the BBW tag for the very reason highlighted. I am a big woman and dont want to hide that fact as bigger woman arnt to everyones taste, just as skinny, older, blonde, brown ect arnt. I prefer to think of BBW as Big Bubbly Woman. I am aware that being big doesnt make me beautiful just the same as being a size 8/10/12/14 doesnt. Its far more than looks alone that makes someone beautiful to me and thats diffrent for each and every one of us.
A big part of being beautiful to me is the person being comfortable with who they are irespective of their physical attributes or any tags :P

Fern Britton oooooozes sexuality. I was watching celebrity wife swap last night and Paul Daniels was calling Vanessa Feltz for being overweight! WTF... Vanessa's only downfall is her outspoken personality but she is a beautiful woman and has just got engaged to a gorgeous guy! Congrats Vanessa!
The term BBW started on the internet, and has become a convenient shorthand for larger women to describe themselves, whether they are completely happy with the term or not.
I don't think anyone implies that slimmer women are not beautiful - slimmer women have all the magazines and other media constantly confirming that they are desirable, whereas larger women have the odds stacked against them, especially now that so many people have suddenly become healthy-eating experts after reading a few magazine articles or watching a few TV programmes. Many larger women have to put up with all sorts of insults and stereotyping both from friends and family, and from complete strangers.
Who can blame larger women who have problems in the self-confidence department giving themselves a little boost with the BBW label?
Here is a classic SH thread on the same topic from a long while back:

I've fancied Fern for years. sillyhwoar:
I find Dawn French very attractive but not particularly sexy.
Vitoria Wood? Not at all, to me she's very butch and I don't find that appealing. (Please no comments about the hypocrisy, each to their own!)
Now don't take this the wrong way but......

A much as Ian doesn't like me saying this, I describe myself as fat and don't really bother dressing myself up as a BBW dunno
Think sometimes very thin women feel as unattractive as bigger women. its a feeling we all have men and women at sometime in our lives.
Never heard of BBW before I came on here and really not sure what it describes as each of us are so different anyway. Think MaryA summed it up really well with her label.
Im a heinz variety and proud of it lol
There is a fairly widely held belief that thin women are vaccuous, a bit thick and quite boring. There is a similar belief that larger women are gregarious, bubbly and more fun. Most men, if they're honest, prefer a fuller, curvier figure. Yet we're bombarded, on a regular basis, in the media by photos and images of thin women and size zero models.
I often feel inadequate being smaller, having less in the way of curves than most. But I have no problem at all with the term BBW. I think if larger women wish to use the phrase Big Beautiful Women to describe themselves then more power to them. Frankly anything to bolster the female ego which, lets face it, is quite fragile.
I've been trying to come up with a similar suitable phrase which would cover thin women, TBSS (Thin But Still Sexy), SBSF (Small But Still Fun). I don't know if they'll catch on though.

a good friend of mine considers herself to be a BBW. i had never understood what it meant until i asked her, to which she replied that it meant Big Beautiful Woman, but by her own definition the Beautiful represents her personality rather than physical looks. i myself am a size 12 and a few of my friends are "larger" ladies, although they may wish they were my size i wish i had their confidence. swings & roundabouts i guess
Hmm, that's got me thinking. As a 12/14 dress size, I guess Im neither here nor there. Should I describe myself as a W.O.B.S (working on being skinny) or PBBWIFEC? (Potentially big beautiful woman if fed enough chocolate?
