currently with aol was paying a month for unlimited use and download and 8meg speed .
they now are putting the monthly charge up to £18 a month and i dont want to pay that for a sub standard service .
anyhow you guys here all have broadband so who are you with and how much is it per month, and is it any good
just want to surf the net, minor downloading of music sending e mails very basic usage basically
have browsed various broadband checker/ comparisson sites for information but you cant beat knowledge from people who use the same service .
all knowledge gratefully accepted
many thanks

my £18 is coming from aol . they say the cost from my local exchange has gone up to them so they have to put mine and everyone's price up in the area that the exchange provides
i have called to discuss this with them and they are adamant of this price increase so i wish to go elsewhere
Do you have $ky? You can get free (or cheap) bb from them. I think if you have an Orange moby you can get a similar deal, so it might be worth looking at other mobile providers too. Also, try for some good advice.

That's correct about Orange. I get free BB and free evening and weekend calls on my landline, inclusive in my monthly mobile bill.
Virgin media are mind blowingly good and actually deliver the advertised speed unlike any telephone line based system.
i do have sky yes i'll contact them, did not think of them
thanks

When $ky needed to get into the BB market (to keep up with the competition) they just went out and bought an existing provider - Easynet. Easynet provide a business quality product so $ky is probably quite reliable. ;-)
thanks cubes very helpfull

Well once it takes off, it will be separated out, given a new technological sounding name and sold off as a private company.
Hang on - didn't that already happen?
Virgin/Blueyonder. Never had a problem with them in 15 years. Last month they knocked £8 of my bill and gave me mobile broadband for nothing as a thank you for my loyalty.
I have Sky broadband and if I recall correctly its either £5 or £10 a month for 8meg and it constantly runs faster than that....
Never had any issues with the service at all...

I have heard bad reports about Sky. We did look into going with them but decided to stay with Virgin.
There is a famous old saying " buy cheap...buy twice ".
Meaning that cheap is not always the best way to go. They are all pretty similar, and for us we could not bother moving from Virgin, to save a couple of quid a month by moving.
At the end of the day, unless you're in a cabled area, you're lumbered with BTs exchanges and shoddy wiring which ever provider you go with.
True words jewel.
I'm currently with Pipex and have to say the service has generally been good (despite nightmare problems I read from other users). However, now they've been through a take-over by Tiscali who have been purchsed by Carphone Warehouse, I'm planning to move.
I've been doing quite a bit of research recently and the two that come up trumps on each occasion are O2 (excellent customer service and no hidden extras) and PlusNet (genuinely unlimited downloads on some packages).
I'd be interested to know if anyone here is using either of those providers - I'm in an area that's not due for LLU until 2010 and I want to move before then.
Thanks wink
o2 here, great ISP and cheap if your a customer, that includes PAYG mobiles
We use sky. It's great and it's cheap as chips. Never had a problem with them
Mr & Mrs Classy
Before jumping ship, use this site to compare potential ISPs. It's based on feedback from users and it's a real eye-opener. Why people stick with AOL is beyond me, they score last on everything no matter who they are compared to.

For the record, we are with Zen, not the cheapest but just about the fastest of the non-cable providers and the best customer service back-up there is.

Perhaps they might emulate a certain Richard.
I am with a small british outfit called PlusNet - recommended by an IT colleague. They are not the cheapest but they have excellent customer service with UK call centre (OK - Yorkshire so could be some language problems).
Check them out...saying that my other half has had an offer of free broadband from O2 - any feedback welcomed...
Fussy bugger me, usually....
I pay a month
This gives me unlimited BB @ 10Mb (unfortunately my line only supports 8Mb)
+
free phone calls 24/7
+
free tech support (no charge on the phone calls to BB support)
+
Really cheap calls to mobiles (6ppm)
+
Free web space for building your own website
+
10 free dedicated email addresses
In 8 years I’ve had no more than 10 hours 'downtime' and most of that has been in the wee small hours for maintenance.
European call centre, helpful n knowledgeable staff,......
and best of all, these are customer loyalty benefits, not available, or even offered to 'new customers', like i said, fussy bugger me, been with this ISP for years n years and am now reaping the benefits. About time we got back to the 'loyal customer benefit system' imho
and yes, if you get hold of the right person, you can still negotiate deals that suit you, change packages and talk to an actual human being if you take the time to be bothered
downside? .......... I find it quite hard to understand Scandinavian accents lol
SUPANET rocks ;oD
