Ive just seen that for this years Brits awards they are picking the best single of its history since for the award are Joy Division-Love will tear us apart,Queen-We are the champions,Kate Bush-Wuthering heights,Robbie Williams-Angels and Will Young-Leave right now.
The book makers are making the fecker Robbie Williams odds on favourite to surely you can't tell me that Angels is the best song in the last 28 years??? and i'm sure that they could have chosen some better songs than Leave right now to be up for it.
I have no quarms over the great Joy Division or Queen even if its an odd choice, but where are the great bands afferings from the past 28 years???
Oh well it looks like being yet another crap Brits, but why change the habit of a lifetime.
that prog on telly made it bohemian Rhapsody didn't it? and I couldn't agree more...
definitely not angels though, but it'll win because it's fresh in everyones mind
it just has to be joy division...one of the greatest songs ever. cool
Will Young , but no Bowie or U2 , Heroes is a classic, Streets have no names , Pride , With or without you ,and many more . FFS who decides the list for these things ??
ther are far to many bands (let alone solo artisits) from the past 28 years to even tihink about which had the best single. (joy division out of the list you published gets my vote). however i agree the more recent singles will get voted for a its the lippy kids etc who usually vote. shame really as i'd like to see God save the Queen by the sex pistols up there but that will never happen.
music is such a personal choice and only the classics such as bohemian rhapsody by queen any michael jackson song ,elton john, rod stewart ,david bowie, u2, maddona and such like should be mentioned as they are great groups, great singers with a massive back catologue of music and have toured the world over and done it all and the majority of these less modern musicians created the foundations of which todays music is based on .
can you see the modern bands like coldplay, travis, robbie williams the so called superstar with only a few albums and a few years in the music bussiness still selling millions of albums some twenty years later . or even selling out a stadium venue in 20 years time dont think so .
as for the best single since 1977 til today there are so many to choose from if robbie williams wins its a joke .
ive thought of about 10 but music is a personal choice and alot of people would probably dissagree.
boheiman rhaspody always wins the best song ever polls with a beatles track usually second and stairway to heaven is usually either second or third with the beatles so say no more .
I don't think I've heard Joy Division redface how embarrassing!
imagine is a pretty good song too, but it'd have to be the remake in that timeframe biggrin
WILL YOUNG? FRIGGIN WILL YOUNG?? mad :x :x :x
AAAAAH
Ernie... he drove the fastest milkcart in the West.
Of course Robbie Williams will win, not because he deserves it but because the likes of Joy Division aren't really known to the current generation.
I dont see how they can pin it down to any one song! We all have different memories and not everyone would even like the song they pick as an end result!
I do like Joy Division and Queen a lot but ffs Robbie Williams??? rolleyes
They might as well nominate the fecking spice girls grrrrrrr!
I think that its the songs that have won the brit award for best single since it began, hence why there are so many pants ones.
Joy Division has to be the best of the lot, such an influential song, but as so many have said how many kids know who the feck Joy Division were.

They evolved into New Order, part of the early Manchester scene. You'd know the track if you heard it.

You'll have to sing it for me!!!!
Sorry,as an addition on the Brits, good to see Franz Ferdinand and The Streets nominated so many times, but The Zutons only 1 nomination, surely they're not "SO last year "already!

Honey, in my head I am a fantastic singer, however in reality even Leo Sayer is better than me. If you wish your eardrums to be violated I would be delighted but need a promise you won't throw eggs at me. On the other hand if you prefer sounds with harmony gag me with industrial strength tape!
My advice is visit

Ohh gagging now there's a thought......first time for everything wink ..but ear drum violation .nah I'll have a listen to link XXXXXX biggrin ..thanks babeXX

Generally speaking, nowadays bands don't make 'proper' albums, you know a dozen tracks and maybe only one or two were ever released as singles. Nearly all the bands release the majority of tracks as singles, so by default most albums are just compilations.
The last really great album/CD I bought in recent years was proably The Last Broadcast by Doves, yet they never get a mention now in 'pop world'.

Slight hi jack I guess, but got to disagree,I think "A grand don't come free "is a modern masterpiece of an album, just one of many around many good new artists and bands around.
Very subjective "subject"(excuse metaphors!)I know.

Well if I had my way these teen mags and a***holes would be forced to listen to bands that played instruments and that weren't bothered about being good looking or dancing. The site of Joe Strummer, Phil Lynott, Paul Weller playing a guitar or Terry Hall with a microphone would scare the living shit out of MTV and the rest of the soulless gits!!!!!!
Aggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh

There are some great bands around I will admit that, Streets are excellent as are The Libertines, but I just feel they deserve more airplay on mainstream radio and TV, artists like that deserve a mass audience, but it goes back to image, the sexy boys who can dance but have no ability are bubblegum. Think back to when you were 12 or 13 and you had music to listen to on Radio 1, local radio etc, now even though there is so many more mediums we get crap thrown at us that on the whole is consumable music.

There's a reason for "target audience "is aged 8-14 for singles hence the covers and pretty boy bands getting constant I know, but music is such a massive industry now, that the quick kill is that(somehow)good stuff can get through.

Everything I do by Bryan Adams was the Robin Hood song, Wet Wet Wet did Love is All Around. Both songs were number one for an obscene length of time and even now still remind me of nails on a blackboard to listen to aaaaaaarrrrrrggggggggghhhhhh!!!!!!!
Joy Division on the other hand, pure genius, if only Ian Curtis had stayed a little longer sad
Oi primary teachers do serious music I'll have you know, buggered if I understand it lol
