Hi All
I appear to fallen victim to a virus or something (not v clued up as you may tell). Its on my home / naughty laptop so I am wary about taking it into a regular shop !
I have tried to sort it. I have AVG and have reinstalled the latest version etc after setting up a 2nd user as it wont allow me to do anything on my user account. My back screen has been replaced with a warning. I am sure its not a big job (well I hope not) I am just stuck.
Can anyone recommend a swing friendly IT person or help ? Obviouslymore than happy to pay going rate.
Thanks smile
Can you give a bit more detail, there's a few programs that try to convince you they're a virus but are just a way of getting you to buy a specific program to remove it (although there are other ways). Also, do you have the original installation discs that came with the laptop (you might not have had any though with the budget machines) Whats the make and model?
I'm not too far away from you and travel to Brum about twice a week, i'd be happy to have a look at it if you want.
PMSL!
Just said to LFB.....MEATY!!!!! Where is he?

Hi
Not sure how to explain it but I'll give it a go. I was just closing down as normal when desktop screen went blue and then said I had spyware etc and before I could read much more another screen popped up looking like it was running a report for errors but it wasnt avg so i didnt think it was for real, I closed it down as it went to an american page wanting money to buy software which I didnt do. But since then the Windows Security Shield (on the lower right) keeps popping up telling me there are problems whenever I try to access a file. It says Malware protection is off (everything else is on) but wont allow me to turn it on (shows AVG 2011 underneath it).
Dont think I have any discs - just a cheap E-Systems laptop, about 3 yrs old
It one of the spam progs to get you to buy their software, they're usually not the sort of virus to harvest your details (but don't use it for any security based things- banking or shopping etc)
Depending on which one it is depends on if it can be removed easily or the system needs a full reinstall. just make sure you don't click on any links it gives you.
If its 3 years old then i'm guessing you probably use XP on it? Worst case is it just needs a full reinstall- do you have much on their you wish to keep? (pics/contacts/favourite pages/docs/programs etc?).
If you haven't then a full reinstall would be the best option to give you a fresh start, i could do this quite easily- i have a copy of XP on volume licence so you should still get windows updates.

Yes I have XP and I have a stack on things on there - only brought a portable hardrive during the week, that was my job for tomorrow !
How do I go about seeing if I can remove it easily ?
you need to look what site its sending you to and then google the solution, but quite a few of them require a fair bit of work and often need you to boot up from a copy of XP on disc so you can remove locked files from the registry.
Have a look and PM me if it looks too tricky and we'll see if we can sort out a solution

OK I'll give it a go. If I dont get anywhere I am hitting the bottle and will come back to it tomorrow.
Thanks for your advise x
Hi,
I removed the same thing from a friends pc a few weeks ago. Download , when you start the program run check for updates to get the latest spyware definitions then perform a full scan. If it doesn't find it while you're logged into the second account, start windows in safe mode (keep pressing F8 while the pc is starting and a boot menu with a safe mode option should appear) log on to the infected account and run Malwarebytes from there.

Another thing to try first would be a system restore to a point before the problem started. If that gets rid of it then you should be able to update AVG and Windows, and then scan to remove it.
To get system restore running you're better off in 'safe mode' - usually accessible by holding F8 when you switch it on. Then click 'start' and go into help and support.
if you arnt able to get help any other way then you dont need to worry about taking it to a shop to get it fixed, they arnt at all bothered about swinging sites that people look at, in fact they might well be on SH too smile
you would only need to be worried if you went on ilegal sites
danne
try and install spybot, it will find the problem and nuke it! lol
