or maybe people say they haven't got a webcam cos there are so many people out there who just want to cam and use it as an excuse to 'get in'.
just the fact that you have seen them on cam or spoken on the 'phone doesn't mean that they can't still send you to a false address does it?
there are a great many people on this website CC, who have been members for longer and so are aware of many of the pitfalls - you only joined today and seek to advise us all?

Seeing people on a webcam doesn't prove anything except what the person looks like though. We have a webcam but I prefer not to use it ... it identifies me, I have small children in the house, and try hard to protect my identity.
OK, Im obviously a fake and a set up as I dont own (yes really dont own and wont buy a web cam) neither do I do telephone calls before a meet.(there is no way i want to hear anyone till i meet them its part of the excitement)

normally like to have a chat in room,or msn, then if think its going ok exchange phone numbers for chat, can normally weed out timewasters,nutters, useing this method if in doubt leave it for while to have a think?
having said that i have in past just chatted and gone to and address given{but being 6ft1well built lad any funny person might think twice} with no problem,
having nobody to tell, is problem so i write all details down , email, phone number address,where meeting etc and leave it at home in a place it will be found if i should not return

I think it is potentially a problem, but on the other hand, how many crimes are actually committed against people who meet via sex-sites? We hear of one or two, but that is probably the tip of a very small iceberg and one shouldn't be unduly afraid
To my mind the biggest problem is probably the time-wasters and fantasists. And for us (a couple who are married to othe people) there is the risk of "exposure" by malicious people - mostly jackal-reporters, living off other peoples lives. For that reason we don't want to use a web-cam.
We have found that a couple of phone conversations followed by a meeting in a public place is a good way forward.

Even though you are tall and well-built, and think you can look after yourself, that's not enough if there are a group of others, or if, in my case, you go to someone's house where it turns out they have a rottweiler! (I manage to extricate myself from a potentially tricky situation unscathed, luckily, but it was scary). I would advise people to make NO exceptions to the "first meet in a public place" rule, and even after that, be very careful, especially if it's a couple you are meeting, as it was in my case..

Several months ago I would have regarded this advice with some incredulity. I wouldn't have thought it possible that people would arrange to meet privately having had no contact other than dots on a computer screen. However, since joining SH I've become aware that there are some extremely reckless people out there, and advice like this does indeed seem necessary. But I can't help wondering: Are the people to whom it applies smart enough to take any notice? I suspect not.
