Boiler exploding?!?!

Should I pack up all my treasured possessions and leave my flat now?
Our bolier has been making crazy banging sounds for ages recently, every time the pilot light goes on it sounds like a mini explosion.
We were going to get a plumber out, but everyone reassured us that the radiators probably just need bled and there's just some air somewhere in the system.
(radiators have never been bled and the bolier is 6 years old!)
The past 3 occassions, however, it has sounded like a massive explosion- today was the worst by far, and it actually sounded worse outside the flat- i could hear a massive bang echoing in the car park as if the noise had come from the roof ( we live in the top floor flat) The kittens are still hiding under the bed after it!!!
Should we be scared or do we really just need to bleed the system? or the whole flat about to burn down?!?!?!?!
eek!

oops! in the wrong place- can some helpful soul move this for me?!

why not call a plumber , they fix boilers by the way wink rather than listen to unqualified "experts"
Get packed and get over here
If you rent the place get onto the landlord now! if not get a plumber

I could, but if I call out a plumber, and get charged a weeks wages for them to tell me the radiators need bled - i will not be a happy chappy!
Never had much luck with plumbers, so I'd rather not get someone out unless absolutely necessary, i'd prefer to listen to the 'experts' on here first!

so you would rather attempt some kind of remedy of fixing your problem from a diagnosis from someone who is guessing what the problem may be . all the best . can see the local newspaper headline now. Man blows up house by fiddling with boiler cos a bloke on the net told me too
by the way have you bled the rads ? and has this cured the problem ?
all the best
what boiler do you have ??
is it a combi boiler, if it is you will not have a hot water cylinder or a cold water storage tank in your loft.
if this is the case there will be a pressure gauge on the boiler, when running it should read between 11/2 to 2 21/5 bar. when off it should be 1 bar anything less or nothing in it means lack of water and pressure in system. Most likey it makes that sound when your heating calls for heat. can you look and reply.
It's not a bloke- I'm the female half of the equation and, no, I have yet to bleed the radiators, (which is not a difficult job to do) and there is no harm in finding out if anyone has experienced similar problems, and finding out if i can do anything myself first.
The last time i called a plumber out was to fix my washing machine, it cost 80 quid, and all he did was open the bottom panel and pull some coins out of the drain- something i have done myself before for free, and definatley wasn't 80 quids worth of work!
So you can understand why I'd like to get other peoples thought on the matter before paying the call out charge first!
Sarah- does your offer still stand?
I'm in need of a hot shower

I would say this time it ISabsolutely necessary. Sometimes there's no alternative, despite the possible cost.
As expensive as plumbers ( and other tradesmen ) can be, I'd be inclined to call him out hunni. Your safety is more important right now and it's better to be safe and broke than heading for Heaven the fast way confused
my boiler does the same thing maz, it really does sound like its going to explode lol its the pressure so i just make sure i check the gauge regularly. it did pack in completely once tho and i called a plumber out of the phone book - and was swiftly ripped off! he told me he had replaced three parts...
a couple of weeks later it died again and i decided to call the people recomended by the manufacturers at the suggestion of a friend i would never have even thought of that) and i was told and shown how not a thing had been replaced mad
the fraud had even given me an old part out of his van as evidence as what hed taken out of my boiler! the proper plumber showed me how the seriel numbers didnt even match! the cheek of it! if id kept his number or remembered what the hell his company name was id have reported him rolleyes
so yes, id say get a recomendation of a plumber or find out who does the repairs for your type of boiler...mines vokera and he was great smile
oh, it still sounds like it might explod every now and again tho
confused
Please Please distinguish between a plumber and a heating engineer who is preferably CORGI registered
No self respecting Doctor would diagnose long distance and this is no different.
There are many many possible reasons for the problems your having and many things have to be taken into account.
The noise might be air in rads or incomplete combustion in the burner, and there is a WORLD of difference, one can be damaging and noisy, the other is safety critical
Regards,
Amy, Heating Engineer
biggrin
Maz i have sent you a pm
You can now get a one off job done by Gritish Bas rather than Sid Spanner and his Lead Pipes. At least you know they'll be Corgi registered and have someone to compain to if it goes wrong.
Hiya i am a plumber! what type of system have you got?
i.e have you got any tanks in your loft or airing cupboard?
Unless youve messed with any radiators or pipework cant see why air could get into the system. how longs it been doing this?

This is what i was after- I wasn't meaning there is no way I'm getting someone out to look at it, just wanted peoples opinions on how much it warrants getting someone out by how serious it sounds!
We thought about the british gas one off payment thing, has anyone had experience of this?
We don;t wanna go whole hog with getting a new one fitted unless absolutely necessary as we're hoping to move house asap anyway.
Thanks gemini- you wanna come round and fix it yourself?!
Thanks ukwineman- not read it yet but will do!
ta also sassy, mike, and kitten
sweet pair- its a combi, a powermax 185, and whoever wrote something about pressure- its at 3 bars at the mo- is that good or bad? (mind you , i have just switched it all off out of fear- who wants to come keep me warm!?)
m xx
get it checked out by registered corgi engineer maz you have pressure in system so cant be air. as gemini said cant tell any more from here.

I'm on the A1
My central heating packed in today, the boiler has been making strange noises for a while now and then today all the radiators were cold..
anyway, called British Gas and explained the problem and they were very helpful, they said we can pay a one off fee of £156 which covers parts and labour. We have decided tho to go for a contract, pay £35 a month which covers everything, plumbing, heating, drainage, any repairs and they will check the boiler once a year. So.... they are coming out tomorrow afternoon, fix the problem and ill be safe in the knowledge that we are covered!!
Hope this helps and good luck - im missing my heating today lots!!
