i think i might have mentioned this one before redface but 'eve green' by susan fletcher is just brilliant......
most of her infuences come from poetry and you can see it in her writing.........pure brilliance for such a young writer......
another favourite of mine is Ian McEwans Atonement.........or actually most of his books........lol
but my favourite authour has got to be Maragret Atwood......... worship :worship: :worship:

Have you read Anno Dracula by Kim Newman?

Have you tried any of Michael Moorcock's stuff? The Eternal Champion series is amazing

I read Moorcock in my youth. I loved the old hippy. I fact I read loads of sword and sourcery stuff back then and I always thought Moorcock had an original spin on it all. He didn't write about 'mighty thewed barbarians' with tandori sauce rubbed into their bodies but flawed heroes. Re-read the Hawkmoon books recently and still loved them. If I had $100 million to make a film it would definitely be Hawkmoon
..... or some other stuff lol
Hawkmoon was a much better Champion than that wimsy Elric anyway :giggle: The Jewel In The Skull scared the crap out of me when I first read it :scared: Those Govt officials were real bastards ! ............................oh, that sounds familiar
I think I prefered Corum, certainly the second series. Bull and the Spear etc. I think the tragic tone appealed to the teenager in me, and all the sword fighting. wink
Have you read The Warhound and the World's Pain? also by Moorcock?

Excellent story ! :inlove: That was the book that got me into Moorcock in the first place.
do you think we just hijacked this thread? :giggle:

We're talking about books, so no.
I liked the Oswald Bastapole stories (Warlord of the Air) I think that's what got me into alternate history stories. There is no doubt that Moorcock is a very influencial writer, I see his style in a lot of modern writers.
Never got into the Jerry Cornilious books but recently read something by Mark Gatiss (League of Gentlemen) which could have being Moorcock with a modern slant.
Behold The Man was quite good if a bit bizarre at first confused
Did you know that he wrote the tie in novel to the SExPistols film 'The great Rock and Roll Swindle'? Apparently it only took him a week (no proof reading) and had nothing to do with the film.
I believe he wrote much of the Champion Eternal stuff to fund a magazine he edited. So it was a very mercenary act.
For the people who have read 'His Dark Materials'
What would your daemon be?

I can't believe I started this thread so long ago and I am still reading the same book. I can't recommend Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrel enough. It is a LOrd of ther Rings sized tome but worth the effort. Honest.
I bought it as three seperate books but I believe it is originaly just one. Take my advice and go for the 3 book option.
Just finished reading Harvest by Tess Gerritson which was quite good i a little gruesome at times confused
I have a huge collection of sci-fi and fantasy books, sadly most of them in boxes in the shed at the moment. Moorcock was one of my favourite when I was in my late teens, early twenties. I have most of the books he had written that were in print at the time.
I’ve just been re-acquainting myself with Sir Harry Flashman VC KBE, hero of the British empire and all-around bounder and cad. Simply required reading for the Victorian enthusiast. biggrin

Ohh im not a big reader but Sci-fi now ya talking
Oh i mentioned Of Mice and Men in another thread a while back and i found it the other day. It's a copy i forgot to take back when i was at school after reading it in english redface
I may have a bash at that again as it's probably the only book other than one about the Kray twins ive ever read and enjoyed.
What's your fav sci-fi book then?
Can't resist this thread. Best book I've read this year has been Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. A beautifully written, evocative tale of a hidden world. Written so serenely by a man in a women's eyes - amazing 10/10.

Up until recently I would have said No, however Memoirs of a Geisha is written by Arthur Golden based on reseacrh from many former Geisha'a. However even so he is so convincing writing in the first person as a female - WOW.
Any one else read this?

I read this recently and loved it.
I like the fact that the narrator is an ordinary person and not a hero. So what you get is just an account of events rather than a square jawed scientist saving the world. One of the reasons for liking War of the Worlds

I would seriously reccomend anything by Chris Ryan, the former SAS guy who tabbed out of Iraq alone.
Some of the books really draw you in and can keep you hooked.

Hubby reads Chris Ryan and Andy McNab got a pile of them on bedroom floor now awaiting bids on ebay
