I have nothing to add to what everyone else has already said as I can't see the problem with it at all........I would like to hear from the people who don't like it though as I'm genuinely intrigued as to why they are against it but I have a feeling that they won't speak up for fear of being flamed for their views.

agreed
i am interested if it is down to their own embarrasment or them believing it is imodest or what?
no one should get flamed for stating an opinion as long as it is not abusive.

Not that I'm expecting to get flamed but I bottle fed both of mine and I have nothing at all against breastfeeding mums. Unfortunately I never got the same respect back sad All the criticism breastfeeders get they tend to direct back to bottlefeeding mums :(
I didn't due to health problems rather than choice.

Were breasts 'invented' (or evolved) to be objects of lust and desire? Or did they evolve for some other reason.
I think we all know the answer!

well in my opinion, that is unjustifiably wrong! how dare people judge you for feeding your children the way you chose.
my problem is with people making it difficult for parents to feed their children by whichever means they want to, breast or bottle.
i brought up the breast thing as it seems to me that thats where most of the problems lie in public.
to us it's only natural - what would people have done without powdered baby milk (or the ready mix formula) they would have to breast feed whether they liked it or not.

Maybe it has nothing to be with being offended.....maybe just feeling alittle uncomfortable,if someone was doing it right next to you on the bus maybe.

I agree with this, although it definately does not offend me, I can see why some people don't think it is appropriate in some situations and it can make them feel uncomfortable. Maybe if more women did it people would get used to it, because to be honest in all my time I have only ever spied one woman breastfeeding her baby in public so it can't be that prevalent.
might be a bit of a vicious circle.
the fewer women do it, the less "normal" it is viewd, so the fewer women feel comfortable doing it.. and so on.
just to say, it is not society that is putting me off doing it, it is the fear that i will smother my poor bloody baby! lol

I'm not wanting to turn this into an argument against the benefits of one vs another but with the advent of HIV and other transmittable diseases, wet nursing, as was available in the victorian times is no longer available.
Whilst formula is not the most desirable form of feeding, for women like me, it meant the difference between life or death of our babies. Not everyone who uses formula has necessarily chosen to do so. I had too!! plain and simple, I almost lost my life giving birth and remained on the critical list for a week after, my milk never came in and my child had to be formula fed. I'd have given my right arm to breastfeed.
Instead I've had to listen to righteous mothers berating me for bottle feeding, explaining the benefits, and treating me like a pariah! So you can see the raw nerve that's been poked too many times.
Sometimes it's not about whether they liked it or not, there are a fair few factors including support networks, adequate advice, and plainly and simply whether the milk is there to feed with!
WBB never intended this as a "breast is best" argument, just whether people were uncomfortable with breast feeding in public.

I do understand where u are coming from. I was able to breast feed our child for a few weeks and them my child went onto formula as I could not keep up with her. U choose what is best for the child and u.

I totally agree with that comment and I also feel that there are many women out there who can't/won't feed in public because of the thought of offending others. I think there should be positive discrimination whereby anyone who complained was made to leave.
I applaud any woman who feeds in public because they put the welfare of their child before the shallow sensibilites of complete strangers.
Right... I'm off me soapbox now ;-)

i don't really think the thread about wether you can or can't breast feed, of course we all would bottle feed if we didn't have our own milk and some bottle feed thro choice and thats their choice, the threads more about other peoples reactions on seeing a woman breast feeding confused
i breast fed all of mine - personal choice. On my 3rd i gave up quite quickly for lots of reasons. But on the first 2 i really enjoyed it.
i know that i love to see women breats feeding as it makes me warm and fuzzy and broody - there you go. sometimes i feel uncomfortable only cos it reminds me that those days are gone and i am getting old. boo hoo..
i can understand how some people, both male and female, would be offended at a woman lobbing them out to feed their child. it maybe not so much that they feel offended but upset, embarrassed, uncomftortable that manifests itself as offended.
i personally did not like lobbing out my boobs in front of all and though i was feeding my baby they were still a very private part of me. i had a real problem with feeding inf front of males members of my family and i think they did too. i think these days no matter how much we say breast is natural it is not the natural thing to lob out your tits at every available opportunity - if that were the case then page 3 and topless waitressing would lose it's novelty factor in a second.
.........as for smoothering the baby, well wellbustybabe, it's only the nipple and a bit of pad you stick in!!! believe me mine were swollen up like watermelons most of the time but i had no problems.
(apparently that is why newly born babies have turned up noses- for easier breating whilst feeding, can't comment cos we all have button noses in my family anyway)
I remember flying London to Denver in the early 90s - I was sitting next to a woman ( 25 ish) who breast fed her baby on the flight right next to me.
She did ask me if she should cover up - I told her it was natural and to carry on.
She just chatted away for most of the flight ( and the baby rarely cried )
As an aside, on a flight they ask breastfeeding women to do so, or other babies to be bottle fed during take-off, as it might stop the baby's ears popping.

Does that only work for babies or should I ask my gf to oblige? :P

Some thing like this happened to me. She asked me to unfasten her. It was not a problem, no one seemed to mind.
just as a matter of interest i have noticed 4 people have voted to go hide in a cupboard yet i cannot find any posts from these people saying why they get offended by it, now as this poll is just an opinion there is not right and wrong and they have the rights to disagree with it as much as we have the rights to agree but i would be really interested to heard from someone who think women shouldn't breast feed their child in public places and why they find it so offensive and it would be nice if other members would agree not to jump on their backs for voicing their opinion
