Hi everyone, currently we use AOL (Arseholes OFF Line) grrrr. We spend as much time offline as we do online nearly and wondered about the Sky connect package, same specs as AOL for £5 a month instead of £27 for AOL. We wondered if anyone else was on this Sky package and how reputable it and SKY are, comments would be helpfull guys pleaseeeeeee,
Hugs n stuff,

Sky's LLU service is actually provided by their recently acquired broadband supplier - Easynet/UK Online. I've used them for some time now with not too many problems. Their worst fault is telephone customer service, but I believe Sky have thrown loads of money into stepping that up for their service.
sky broadband sounds very reasonable priced but hasn't been around long enough to decide if it good enough to get yet!
AOL are pure shit and they dont care about thier customers. We had alot of trouble with them and eventually got some nice compensation from them when we moved to BT. BT have been the best internet provier ive used and are also the only reason i have wireless internet xx
i used to have ntl till moved inow have sky broadband.
have found it very good so far, you can have 3 levels 2meg, 8meg or 16
i was going to spend £5 per month for 8meg but im not close enough to exchange. get them to do a test on your line first the most i could ever acheive was 4meg so no point in going for anything more than the free 2meg.
personally im happy

We too have AOL and have been with them for about 12 years now and never had any problems at all. Yet most other people who have AOL are always complaining about it.
me personally i left AOL for telewest 2 years ago.... and never had any problems with AOL all the time i was with them (5 years) the only reason why i left at the time was that it seem madness to spend 15 quid on dial up on aol when it was 12 quid on broadband (512k at the time) with telewest.....
the quickly upgraded up all from 512k to 2 meg for nothing.....
i have also been looking at the sky broadband deal (since i already have sky... the 2 mb broadband deal would actually be free)
I only drawbacks i have heard about it are the same with talktalk.... it can be hard getting a connection at busy times.... and it does have a download limit...whereas others don't
so at the moment i am playing a game of chicken with telewest/ntl/virgin media whatever they are now called... i was leaving telewest for sky for the broadband deal 6 months ago, they said stay with them and they would give me the 6 six months free, no quibbles.....thought, stick with what i know for the time being...
my 6 months is just about the run out... so just waiting to see what happens next.......
I have aol, and not had any problems.
I have aol too, no problems either. I had huge problems with BT though. I suppose it just depends.
I heard that ntl is good value, but we can't get that here.
We're currently with BT Broadband and have abs. no problems, however, I'm very interested in the SKY package and when my 12 months tie in is up I'll be testing the water so to speak wink

I've been with AOL for about 10 years now and never had any problems (touch wood!!) People always seem to be complaining about it, but I seem to do ok.... Plus there are no download/fair usage policies biggrin

I've always used AOL and can say that I've only ever had a problem a handful of times. I did go through a stage where I seemed to be having some serious broadband problems but it turned out I'd somehow corrupted the modem software. redface
We've just switched over to sky from utility warehouse! (uw were a rip off and had a premium rate customer services number).
now the changover wasnt quite as smooth as we would have hoped - mainly cos BT cocked up and took the broadband provisioning off of our line instead of just switching mac codes (this is a foreign language to me so am quoting what i have been told).
anyway we have only been with sky a few days but no problems so far and the glitces are all taken care of by one of 3 teir teams in their technical support (all contacted by the normal sky number).

Yeah the MAC codes are supposed to ensure smooth transfer from one provider to another, however, when we moved from Wannadoo (now Orange), the guy said "oh you should have asked for a MAC code at the beginning of this conversation, we've just cancelled your account now, you'll have to wait up to 2 wks for your line to clear" !!!!
The company you are leaving are very sly when it comes to letting you go!

and here was me thinking your were totally uncorruptable......
:giggle:
I think it is from this Wednesday that the MAC codes must be provided free of charge...
no probs here with aol, been with them on and off for over 10 years

Amen to that - about time! lol
we can only report what we know from personal experience
BT were a great provider but then for the charges they make so they should be - good but expensive
AOL are a haphazard and uncaring organisation with little to offer in the way of customer service and seem primarily concerned with getting the metropolitan areas served well - if like us your a bit off the beaten track they dont really give as good a service as they could
TALK-TALK (our current provider) have been very good - never had a connection problem ever but we do only get 2.2 meg - not that we're complaining, thats plenty for our use - oh and the connection 'live-wire' (if thats what its called) was too short and we had to invest a further £20 or so getting a longer one
not realy sure wether thats any help but like the starter of this thread we'd be interested to know how people are getting on with SKY as a provider
We switched from tiscali to sky a month ago, and have had no probs as yet. Took the max tenner a month package, only niggly bit we've found is the system is crap, server error alot

if you like aol and have no problems stick with, personally i would not touch it. I freaked when my son put a free cd into my pc to install some wallpaper from the Shrek movie, screwed up my net access. When i tried to delete it there was always bits left in the end i just wiped hard drive and started again.
Yeah i know easy for me to say.
There are a few myths about internet accounts that a lot of people arnt that aware of.
8 or 16 meg download speeds are very very rarely that, all download speeds are dependent on perfect conditions, the right type of exchange, distance from the exchange and the right infrastructure leading to your home.
The superfast internet connections are usually a bit of a con to extract more money from you. Besides unless your downloading huge files (movies)or using multiple chatrooms or downloads at the same time etc it makes no difference to the speed of regular surfing (downloading your average page etc) I have a 1 meg, bog standard connection, the average mp3 file is 5 mb, i can still download it in around 30 seconds. For ordinary net usage what is really more important is the upload speeds available, the internet is as fast as the slowest link in the chain, slow server upload speeds are what cause the bottlenecks.
Its always worth reading the small print on any package before signing up for it, i'll bet not one of them guarantee the speed they appear to promise.
Most Isp's offer pretty much the same service, i personally wouldnt touch AOL, its no more than a user friendly virus, ok while your using it, but wait til you try and remove it. Then you'll see why its known as AO-hell.

I ended up back with AOL, no problems at all.
Word to the wise thou, DON'T install their software. You can still run AOL from IE/firefox etc. That way it can't take over every application on your computer and if at a future date you do decide to move, it's just a matter of changing your router details. smile

We have ended up using AOLs home page in IE to avoid their browser but we can access emails still, they were reluctant to give us our MAC code but did eventually, SKY said to threaten them with OFFCOM if they refused lol. It turns out Sky havent got broadband of their own in our area so they rent it off BT and charge the customer a month on top of their sky package and speed is up to 2MB so that doesnt seem too bad. Still considering others tho.....

thats what were doing at the moment as sky also rent their system until our exchange is updated!
there is a new exchange being built as we speak (new housing area) which will provide much faster broadband etc (according to bt anyway), and sky have offered us a free upgrade to the 8mb for the £5 a month when that happens or to stay on 2mb for free!
it sounds like a good deal and no probs here so far!

What is a MAC code?
The MAC code is issued to you by your current broadband supplier to give to your new broadband supplier to ensure a continuation of service when you swap over. Otherwise you would have to terminate your old service, have no connection, and then pay a connection fee for the new service. So it allows you to avoid an engineer visit.
It's a similar thing when you get a new mobile, you get a code from your mobile supplier, give it to your new mobile supplier (in my case both were O2 when I swapped from pay monthly to contract) and you can keep your original mobile phone number.
Thanks!....will remember that for tha future!
