Mars` needs to change his job, before it kills him. I need a job before he kills me!
I`m looking at taking a nursing diploma as it`s a supportive route towards what I want to do which has some monetary benefits, Mars needs something similar (a secure government job maybe?), he`s sick of working in jobs noone else wants because he has no qualifications. I`d have him stay at home with the kids because he`s better at it than me, but my income won`t allow for that, but I don`t want to see him end up in a dead end full/partime job. Neither can we afford for him to take the time out of work to get an education. At this point completely new ideas would be welcome, we need to turn things around.
Anyone have any ideas of career opportunities which offer training and pay, similar to the route I`m taking? He has no exam passes, he`s a blank slate!
Yup, guess who`s sick to death of researching this in 16 colour res?

Even without qualifications, it would help if he has a CV and an idea of what he would do and what he wouldn't. Can you let people know a bit more about him along those lines? Having little or no qualifications is not a barrier to good jobs - believe me, I know!!

if mars decided he wanted to get some qualifications how about he did some night school classes, basic things like maths and english.
they wouls surely be a big bonus when applying for other jobs once he had them.
Oh I can type up a CV for him, he has oodles of experiance in crap jobs........at this point I think he`s so ground down he doesn`t know what he wants to do! A job which offers more than 10k a year, proper sick pay and more than 4 chosen days a year holiday would be nice for a start!

I know almost exactly how he feels. I've been in the same job for 15 years+ and it's going no-where. sad Most employers seem to either want somone who has the skills already, or they want someone young to train. Either way people like us loose out.
All I can suggest is nightschool or some form of distance learning to try and get a qualification in some area he's interested 's what I'm doing at the mo, but it's going to be at least 4 more years before I can begin to apply for work in this area. :(
Apparently there's a skills shortage at the mo, so maybe learning something linked to the building trade may be an idea. He can do it as a night course and there may be government money available to help/cover the expense.
The only bonus for us (and thing stopping us from being swamped into debt) is Countess is bloody good at her job and is paid a good wage. If I was the sole income we'd be FUBARed.
one other thing... qualifications are not all that when it comes to getting a job.
they can actually be a dissadvantage.
i have loads of qualifications, but this means that due to all the time at uni and stuff i did not have the work experience of some other people.
when i was looking for a temporary job inbetween other things i had a nightmare getting work.. as all the good jobs wanted experienced people, and the less desireable jobs assume that as you are over qualified you will not want to stay with them and leave them in the lurch!
its a no win situation.
but this does not mean that i think mars should not get some if the oppertunity arrises, just make sure that they are relavent to what he wants to do.
Well, I did him a disservice, he does have a certificate in health and safety (not the big one), and a computing certificate, I`ve just been spending too much time online looking at the minimum GCSE requirements etc! He can fill a CV better than I, yet my couple of qualifications open more doors for me in the line of Diplomas etc. Building would be good, and your PM was food for thought Busty, cheers smile
Night school is an option, but he will be needing to leave his job before he completes a course which is why I was thinking a job which offers training.........if only he were 16 again!

I believe there's a shortage of plumbers in this country. It takes some years of training to become a fully qualified plumber so I'm told. But it's a useful skill that's in demand.

Your so right there WBB. Being a full time mum, i applied a few xmas's back at Boots for Termporary Xmas Staff Cover, and was told I was over qualified  I thought well yes, but you only need me to help cover the xmas period, so abuse me!! Nope, they didnt want to know. I wasnt like i was going to get bored and leave them in the lurch, cos it was only for a few weeks away mad Arghhhh
Anyway, Venus, he needs to think of the things he enjoys too, does he enjoy working outside or inside, what natural skills does he have, does he want to work away from home or not? Those kind of questions. Driving can pay well if you enjoy that. Food for thought.
why not use the health and safety qualificatoin on a construction site, he wont be the most popular man there but they may train him up to a ful NACOS certificat first aid is also a good one to have on construction sites
Well you know my idea for you Venus, as for your illustrious other half how about a Courier? Can chose your hours, be own boss, don't need qualifications beyond what he already got.
I still say he should run own business in his current trade.
yeah courier works quite kool,my mates just started with dhl,or one a those, his guarenteed wage is 18k,with opps to earn up to 35k ,or franchising,at telecom plus,a franchise is about 250 quid, theres loadsa free franchises,a guy on my road does one 4 a greeting card company, hes on a decent earner, workin 6 hours per day,3/4 days per week,or u can work online,...sfi r well thought of,there in the institute of better business,in us,but r lookin 4 uk based operators now,...no fees,...ditto a company called, your family first, there new in uk,5 weeks or so,again big reputation from us,but this is virtually ground floor, all work and training is done online, again recomended by the inst of better business,...the childminder was a good call, local authoritys offer training, plus u can work from home,........u gotta like kids tho,...

Yep LC in fact plumbers, electricians, plasterers etc are in demand. Skill led courses are available at your local college, many attached to some sort of return to work scheme. If either of you want to show me your CV happy to help btw. Also Learn Direct if you are unemployed offer free courses on and off line and are a quick and easy way to get basic education to managemnt qualifications. Many are also free. Go check out their web site. Jobs are easier to get than sometimes you think,. Most people just dont either know what they want to do or dont know how to fill in a CV or letter of application. I have many vacancies I cant fill at the moment but its about where you live and what you want to do etc.
Take any help offered you two as thats what this site is about.......................................
The problem with trades etc is a lot of people have already started to retrain and when you qualify a lot of the positions will be filled - a bit like the IT boom a few years ago, theres a lot of competition now.
IShuld do what i am going to do and try and join the police!

The thing about trades are that you can start your own business and there is a national shortage of some trades and there is the knowledge that you are also your own boss.

Don't get me wrong it's not bad idea but plumbing etc isn't the licence to print money some think it is (except for London where some plumbers earn £250K a year) . Theres also alot more competion than is made out -again with the exception of London

Yeah does offer opportunities - at the end of the day i've been a pen pusher for 10 years now, really stressed out and doing probably more dangerous (DSS Visiting Officer) jobs than police (at least you've got back up) for a pittance.
I have frequent bought of being pissed off with my job. sad
I'm having a bought right now, in fact. :( :(
Last year, I wanted to be a train driver because A) I love trains and B) the pay is fucking tremendous compared to what I'm earning now. But the train companies won't have me because I have thyroid problems. :( :( :(
The year before that, I wanted to be a clown but I'm scared of balloons so that idea went up in smoke. confused
Right now, Terry has got me interested in working in theatre or concert hall Box Offices, but every post I see requires experience and guess what... that's right! I don't have any!
I'm now contemplating being stuck in Debenhams forever...
Your not alone there guys.....i've been stuck in the same deadend job nearly 16 years would love to leave but maybe I'm scared of the moment my partner and i work full time, she takes the little one to school and as i finish work mid day i am there to pick him up and do the dinner, housework etc.I don't mind this of course, but i feel i can do something better job wise, when the kids are older i have made a promise to do something about it!
