We have all read or heard about this story. Is this woman a racist, or somebody who has been made a scapegoat?
I think she was foolish, but I feel what happened was not a sackable offence from what I have read.
If she is sacked then so should Jonathan Woss be.
I can certainly understand why the word is found in some circles to be offensive, but this artical has a lot in it, that I feel is bang on the money.
Do others feel she deserved what she got or.....has the ability to say anything, in no matter what context, now been outlawed, by a politically correct directive?
Just for the record I feel the word " gollywog " is not offensive if said about the doll or the jam but.....it is if aimed at a black person, in a hateful manner. Most that I have spoken to including black people have said it is not racist, but could understand why some black people would find it to be....I agreed.
Can't see anything wrong in that article.
Its almost inconsequential what people say now, or why. The fact is that exposing people in this treacherous way; has more or less become the vehicle for getting rid of people who have either become tiresome or who have been paid enough for whatever it is they do.
I know this could be a contensious topic but....I am a bit undecided as to whether she was being deliberatly racist, or just said in no other way, other than to describe what she thought.
The trouble is in todays society, most people would know that by saying that, would cause problems. There are some things we just cannot say today, and most of them I agree with. It is just some things I think have gone too far.
I am just undecided if this is one of those.
The BBC are just running scared of everything, every comment made, on screen or off!
She is old school, from a different world compared to most of us.
Did she mean to abuse folk with black skin in a nasty disgusting way?
I think not!
I am not agreeing with her termonology, she made a silly mistake, in the over sensitive world we live in today, which is not acceptable.
Carol Thatcher is a unique quirky lady, and I for one will miss her from The One Show.
Lucys post.
I dunno what the lady intended or even what was said.
I don't know if she habitually litters her conversation with such terms.
If a work colleague of mine made the alleged statement in front of me Id have a quiet word with them. Solely because I find such statements offensive and I wouldn't want them to think I agreed with their behaviour. If a colleague habitually littered their conversation with such comments Id have to report it eventually I suppose.
We simply dont know the facts of what happened in this instance or how the woman in question behaves day to day.
Of course the BBC is a public body and is expected to uphold the highest standards. Had they not made their decision public I assume the furore would be about cover ups.
In a society riven by hate and prejudice those with access to the media have a responsibility to ensure that they do nothing to excite or inflame such emotions.
I assume the BBC has some sort of code designed to encourage equality and diversity and avoid offence. I assume this woman's comments at her place of work breached that code. If I made the statement she allegedly made at my place of work I would expect a bollocking at the least.
I'm quite happy to do this woman's job at the BBC for a mere fifty grand a year and I will happily avoid comments that potentially cause offence to any minority be it in private or on air.
Moving on, why do I think such comments are unacceptable. In essence it is not necessary to make personal comments about anybody. The sole reasons for making such comments are either a child like attempt at humour, or to reinforce "One of Them" attitudes. You just have to be careful that its obvious your are doing the former and not the latter. "If in doubt keep yer gob shut" as my mother used to say.
Being of afro-carribean descent, I really do fimd this Carol Thachter 'GOLLIWOG' issue (have i used an offencsive word),
All blown out of my mind the word Golliwog is discribeing a childs toy for yesta years and if the Robinson jams logo..
and what a sad day it it was, when they had to stop using it.
all i can say is ,this is the PC brigade getting on there high horses, looking for something to do,as i think they was getting bored . (Forgive the spelling mistakes).
