ok, not quite a full day but.....................
There still seems to be a number of people that are having trouble following the instructions to register their nickname for the chatroom.
So..............this Thursday (8th July) from midday until 10pm we're gonna remove the requirement to be registered so that everyone can join the chatroom directly. If you've been having trouble registering your name or joining our 'help' channel (#shhelp) then please come into the chatroom and ask one of the ops to help you.
I don't know how many ops will be there to help at any one time but the likelihood is that there will be more of us there in the evening. If you come in during the afternoon and there are only one or two ops then please have a little patience and be prepared to wait for a few minutes.

yea i tried to get on earlier! couldnt work it out though!
I've got to say - About time!
I've so far had nothing but grief trying to get into the chat room, and it is this alone that has so far made me give up on ever using the chatroom. I have followed the procedures to the letter, and no joy. The email that is allegedly sent to my registered email address never arrives. Just in case it was a problem with my email addy accepting email from starchat - Attempted to drop, release, and recover my nick - but two out of the three commands are unknown on the server, and i cannot re-register the nick to another email addy! as you can see - the frustration mounts and mounts. I'm an 8 year veteran of using IRC, a channel op on other servers - so i would not class myself as a newbie, However - If i'm having this problem - I can only imagine how annoyed the newcomers are feeling.
I do appreciate what you are trying to achieve with the registered nick scenario - but thus far it appears to be more of a stumbling block then an added security bonus. At the end of the day - to anyone trying to access the chatroom for the first time, I have to say it does somewhat smack of elitism, and leaves one feeling generally unwanted.
none of this is meant as a dig - but i just had to voice a few concerns, in the hope they are taken on board in the manner they re intended
cheers

I didn't receive my activation email the first time round, I got StarChat to resend the activation by using /ns set address <new email> with a dummy address then typing it again with my proper email.
Fair point - But the real problem is - how many newcomers would know to do this, and should nickserv not be sending these activation messages correctly first time everytime?
i'm trying to approach this from the viewpoint of a newbie, and so far i have to say the experience is not the most enjoyable! It seems like you have to jump through hoops.

Sorry if I got your back up Mark - I can assure you - it was not meant to be an out and out criticism, rather an explanation of how the server registration procedure comes across to both newbies, and the long term users.
Who uses AOL? I'd have thought someone would have told you about that by now

Maybe they have! Maybe i'm purely using it for the dial up connection and doing everything else the "conventional" way
I've never had a problem getting them, but then I don't use AOL, nor some other email account that blocks them.

I apologise for using AOL!!!!! I wasn't aware i'd broken the law!
If I had my way with all AOL users, the hoops would be on fire too!

Where shall i Light first? Or would you like the matches? lol
Stil struggling here too....
When I click on the chatroom I just get a grey background in a window, no ability to type or enter the info required, it just stares back at me. So have been stuck with access to the forum and ads only.
All advice accepted with a smile....
Yours, in frustration,
Simon

Sounds to me like you have a new version of Windows XP. Apparently Microsoft have had a falling out with Sun and they aren't allowed to include the java bits any more. Go to and download it. It's free and the site checks which version of Windows you're running so it downloads the right version automatically.

Thanks Steve,
Is that a better option than the mIRC software ?
Simon

Errrrm............it's a matter of personal taste to a large extent. If you just want to go in the room and chat then java is fine and a lot of people prefer it. If you're looking for something more, ie the ability to create pop up messages and swap files etc, then mIRC is the one to go for.
