ok, not quite a full day but.....................
There still seems to be a number of people that are having trouble following the instructions to register their nickname for the chatroom.
So..............this Thursday (8th July) from midday until 10pm we're gonna remove the requirement to be registered so that everyone can join the chatroom directly. If you've been having trouble registering your name or joining our 'help' channel (#shhelp) then please come into the chatroom and ask one of the ops to help you.
I don't know how many ops will be there to help at any one time but the likelihood is that there will be more of us there in the evening. If you come in during the afternoon and there are only one or two ops then please have a little patience and be prepared to wait for a few minutes.

yea i tried to get on earlier! couldnt work it out though!
I've got to say - About time!
I've so far had nothing but grief trying to get into the chat room, and it is this alone that has so far made me give up on ever using the chatroom. I have followed the procedures to the letter, and no joy. The email that is allegedly sent to my registered email address never arrives. Just in case it was a problem with my email addy accepting email from starchat - Attempted to drop, release, and recover my nick - but two out of the three commands are unknown on the server, and i cannot re-register the nick to another email addy! as you can see - the frustration mounts and mounts. I'm an 8 year veteran of using IRC, a channel op on other servers - so i would not class myself as a newbie, However - If i'm having this problem - I can only imagine how annoyed the newcomers are feeling.
I do appreciate what you are trying to achieve with the registered nick scenario - but thus far it appears to be more of a stumbling block then an added security bonus. At the end of the day - to anyone trying to access the chatroom for the first time, I have to say it does somewhat smack of elitism, and leaves one feeling generally unwanted.
none of this is meant as a dig - but i just had to voice a few concerns, in the hope they are taken on board in the manner they re intended
cheers

I didn't receive my activation email the first time round, I got StarChat to resend the activation by using /ns set address <new email> with a dummy address then typing it again with my proper email.
Fair point - But the real problem is - how many newcomers would know to do this, and should nickserv not be sending these activation messages correctly first time everytime?
i'm trying to approach this from the viewpoint of a newbie, and so far i have to say the experience is not the most enjoyable! It seems like you have to jump through hoops.

Stil struggling here too....
When I click on the chatroom I just get a grey background in a window, no ability to type or enter the info required, it just stares back at me. So have been stuck with access to the forum and ads only.
All advice accepted with a smile....
Yours, in frustration,
Simon
Thanks Steve,
