To some extent or another I think we've all found something on this forum to thank Mark, the forum mods and the chatroom mods for - I certainly have, and more than I was expecting too :wink:
I know I've made some great friends and "met" some wonderful people, even in my limited time on here so far.
The main thing that always impresses me is how they manage to be lovely people first and wielders-of-power second. So many other forums, boards and rooms feel very much like the users and the runners - it couldn't be further than the truth on here.
At this point the mods will be expecting a witty dig to end the post - not from me though, this is too meant to ruin the mood !
So, to you all........

Now, I think you need relieving of the burden that's weighing you down: I seem to recall a small matter of a dozen, extremely burdensome snogs. Purely, out of the goodness of my old rustic heart,I am prepared to relieve you of a few of those...and I'll fix you a whopper of a drink. wink

(and I'll tell you all about the Redpolls, Linnets, Dunnocks and all the other little birds which mean so much to me at this time of year)

Birds are good - except for the effing blackbirds which wake me up at m. each morning with their 'chattering'. Mind you in December they were singing madly ALL night - most weird.
We have robins, chaffinchs and other delightful little birds (yellowy breasts?) in my small area of wilderness which shields the street from Newcastle's CME - a delightful oasis in a sea of cars. Hedgehogs too, plenty of rabbits and the shy fox has been known to roam around too.
Now, you see - you have calmed me down somewhat. A good snog is so relaxing!

Gadzooks, this Merlot is of exeptional strength tonight : The old Artificer seems to have buckled at the knees. Thank you kind Jags, I shall retire to my straw pallet a happier man.
And don't be too harsh on the Blackbirds: they are constant, joyous and broadcast their 'joi de vivre' without heed to rank, status or creed. If only people were thus?????

I spent many years trapping Magpies in 'larsen traps' using a decoy (tame Magpie-they were always called 'Maggie', believe it or not!)). In fact, it was drummed into me from a very young Artificer that Maggies were bad news and were to be killed on sight, which I did for years and years. I dread to think how many I killed. Then, one day, I was just about to dispatch yet another pied beauty to its doom , when it looked me in the eye, or at least that's how it felt.
I let it go.
I scoured the country seeking information on Maggies and EVIDENCE of their effect on other birds. Of course, I've watched them all my life, and seen them 'trawl' a hedgerow, and pull out the eggs and young. I've seen them fly off with a screaming fledgeling in their beak, but, I wasn't sure. I got hold of the latest research (details by PM if anyone is interested), and ,true enough, Maggies slaughter young songbirds. BUT their effect is only a tiny , tiny percentage of that from DOMESTIC AND FERAL CATS. Not only that, they are fascinating , intelligent and highly adapted birds. The tame ones I have kept were as intelligent as a dog. So, from that day on, I've never killed one-and never will. I accept that they cause tremendous damage in game hatcheries, and have some VERY unpleasant habits, which may warrant their control in certain circumstances, but, they are wonderful, intriguing and deeply misunderstood birds.
One for sorrow
