my work place is holding a christmas party this year, as part of a thank you to its staff for all the work they have put in over the past year! as im sure many other places will be doing the same!
However, we have had to buy tickets for this at £5 per ticket to cover the expense.
Now i work for a supermarket so there are many staff, so in some way i can understand the need to charge, however, they have booked a hotel with a buffet, but staff have to pay for drinks, again fair enough.
however all year our company have been raising money for the socail fund to cover the cost of this very thing! so what this tells me is that all though the staff throughout the year have already covered the cost of this avent, we are expected to pay again.
Am i wrong to think its wrong that we are being charged to go to our own christmas do, when strickly speaking it should of already been paid for? we have bonus ball twice a week that raises £39 a time to the fund, quiz nights, guess the weight of the pumkin, raffles etc, so its not as if they have only raised afew pounds, and no doubt next year the same fund raising events will be happening to pay for nexts years party.
So does your work place hold a christmas do, and if so do u need to buy tickets to attend? does ur company raise money throughout the year to pay for such an event? or do the company pay for it as a gesture of good will?
I have decided that i wont be attending the works do this year, for one reason im pregnant, and by then would of piled on the pounds, but mainly because i feel cheated that i have paid for my ticket already in my eyes by taking part in the fund raising events throughout the year, i have also decided that i wont be taking part in any future fund raising events as at the moment i cant see how us as staff are actually benifitting from it in the first place
We're not even having a Christmas party this year, the company can't afford anything at all.
I'd be happy to pay £5 towards costs
You could always ring the venue and ask how much it costs to hold an event for that amount of folk with a buffet - that should perhaps give you an idea of where your fund may have gone.
The rates that some places charge for these things are extortionate.
Our firm lays on a breakfast due to the working times of many staff. Its a large event for the biggest department in the firm over 400 staff. Its done for free as a thank you for the years work and the department pays for it out of the annual budget.
I'm in the middle of organising our Christmas party. We usually have a mega posh do in a flash hotel and everything is paid for. It was cancelled last year due to the credit crunch so this year it was suggested we hold it in the office. They left me in charge so I'm having an absolute blast spending their dosh!
I spent three grand on booze today! I've hired a dance floor and a whole pile of lights to transform the boardroom! We're having curry! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
And I've not told them yet but I've bought the bosses stupid t-shirts and santa hats for when they're serving the drinks!!
In answer to the OP... I don't think it's too much to ask for people to pay for a ticket but I would be questioning it if I'd already put into a fund throughout the year. Can you ask someone where the money you've saved all year is going? Although a meal for £5 is a bargain.
It's all to do with the tax man.
An employer is allowed to spend up to a certain amount on staff "entertainment" which they can claim against their tax bill.
See
But, (isn't there always?) if the employer gets it wrong (like enough people don't turn up putting the cost per head over the limitation) employees can find themselves being taxed for the benefit through their SATR. See
Happy Christmas!
I would happily pay a fiver for a christmas do. However, our christmas do is free gratis only i cant go.
They have booked us all in for a paint ball session and i think its a fantastic idea unfortunatly with 2 slipped discs in my back i dont think its the place for me so therefore i will be joining them all after for a pub lunch and i think that is much more fun than sitting around getting pishedand paying £30 for a taxi home.
my work place has approx 30 to 50 people working there at various places locally
the christmas do is arranged by one member of staff and staff have to pay to go
we arnt a profit making workplace so i cant see how the bosses could pay for it
this year its not much money but some staff arnt keen on the venue
i never go to them cus im not sociable and altho some people there are nice, theres plenty i cant stand so certainly wouldnt want to socialise with them !!
the boss says we should all go cus its a bonding time .... il bond with myself lol
i will be having a meal out over the hols with the people i actually work with tho but obviously we will all pay for ourselves
Our company bash was cancelled last year, but we still went out and had a team thing in a local pub. Dinner and skittles (the game, not the sweets!) was rather cool actually.
This year (after MUCH hard work from everyone in the company) we're having the company thing again and the team thing. Really looking forward to it as, despite the current financial situation, we've done rather well.
Bring it on!
*Him*
(And yes I'd pay a small fee, but there are 2000 of us to look after lol)
My boss is so tight ?????????????????????????????
He wont let me have a day off work
no christmas party
no holiday pay
no time to relax
no time for swinging ( will see about that )
in fact scrooge could be his middle name
Thats cos i am self employed :P :P :P :P :P
trav..
we usually have a big black tie ball in a marquee in a flash hotel, there was 3000 staff last year
we are now down to just below 1000 due to redundancies, there is no big flash xmas party cos along with the cost, its a bit unfair for the firm to be forking out thousands for a xmas ball when we are making people redundant, its insensitive,
we have been told we can hold our own parties in the office, work will provide a buffet but we provide our own drink, which to me is fair enough,
Nola is right, these events costs thousands, i think our party alone was around 50 grand just for the 800 that actually attended with the meal and entertainment, venue, couple of bottles on each table, then we bought our own, so it is quite possible that its only cost £5 due to the rest has been raised, it could have been a lot more.
