After a fairly rough 18 months when I let myself go. I drank too much and started smoking again now I've just kicked the drinking habit. I've been dry for several weeks and feel good but now I need to stop smoking. Any advice?
Try the patches hun but you really have to have some willpower whatever you use to help you give up. Your GP should be able to help too plus there are loads of webbies around on the subject of quitting.
Well done on giving up the booze and good luck with stubbing out the nasty fags :smoke: innocent

After having had a heart attack 18 months ago some might say it should be easy for me to give up........Wrong....
I have tried the patches in varying strenghts and the chewing gum etc etc and nothing seems to work......Probably because they will only work when used in conjunction will willpower..
Thats something I certainly dont have...
I am due to see my consultant on Friday and after taking advice from a friend of mine who is a GP and another who is a paramedic (his wife works for the no smoking thingy) I shall be asking him about the newest medicine on the market called Zyban(sp?)..
My friends wife(the one who works for the no smoking thingy) has seen favourable results of around 90% in patients she has seen......Many of these have tried all the other commercially available remedies and had no luck...
So...............If my consultant says it wont affect any of my other meds then its off to the GP to get a prescription for this new medicine and one for some willpower..
Wish me luck..... biggrin
A friend of mine suggested I should only smoke after sex...... which at present would mean that I would give up completely.
Good luck - and for those who who have given up smoking - well done, just don't go back.
It's much better once you've given up for a short while, then there's a chance that the stink of smoke around you and on others will help you stay off the dreaded weed. From personal experience I'd say you need will power and have to want to give up for the right reasons ( in fact there are no wrong reasons ! it's just a nasty habbit )
I'd say don't do the things that were routine for you. E.G. If you sat at the PC around midnight and had one, break that habbit and the association. If you had one for breaky with a coffee first thing - try exercise instead. In short whatever you did when or the time you were at your weakest when you wanted one, don't go there and do something else instead.
Good luck in whatever works for you. My fingers crossed you make it.

I hear ya rolleyes
My son banned me from smoking in the house so I have to go into the garden therefore cutting down my intake by loads, mainly coz I don't like standing in the rain or just can't be arsed logging off the pc everytime I want a puff ( I daren't leave it on in case he has a peek at my bookmarks innocent ) When I was smoking whilst on the pc, I'd get through loads as I wasn;t taking any notice of how many I was getting through redface

I smoke and I smoke far too much and yes even I tell tell my health is suffering. Shortness of breath during energetic activities and all that redface
The trouble is I enjoy it and I know I should give up (I was TOLD by my doctor in no uncertain terms to give up in my early twenties due to breathing problems) but I enjoy it I've given up other vices over the years and quite frankly found them easy to go without. But some reason I have no wish to stop smoking and can't simply cut down, so I guess untill I decide I want to stop it's not going to happen confused :? :?
i smoked for years.. well sort of, and i got occasional but regular coughs, which turned into bi annual chest infections. One year i had such a bad chest infection.. I was coughing up blood over a long period of time, I had night sweats, a body rash ... and some other symtoms, which as my doctor and I both knew were symptoms of lung cancer ... her face changed visibly after examining me, rang the hospital immediately, and sent me there for a chest x ray.
Nobody mentioned the C word, but the way in which the atmosphere and her attitude changed was a fright.. and then the x ray was awful, waiting there, seeing all the peoples lungs up on the light boards as you walked to the cubicle to get x rayed. So, there i was, starting to panic about lung cancer ... only a 5% chance of survival after 5 years... lung transplants rare as rare things, and not something that you can just fix, you cant live without then either.
can you believe you have to wait two weeks for the x ray results. Let me tell you those two weeks were the most frightening of my life, and the most devastatingly emotional. Not one of those cigarettes i had smoked, and loved, was worth the situation i could potentially be in. Your life is not worth risking for a cigarette with your drink. I cannot express that enough, but then you only fully realise the implications of something when they appear to be a reality.
Upshot is - it wasnt the big C... but i have managed to cause problems there .. and 3 years on my lungs are still clearing out the crap that i put in them.
I still love the smell, but now I realise how stupid I was to damage something, my lungs, without which you just cant breathe ..therefore die.
on a cheery note ... i love the booze even more now because i can taste it

I shall be asking him about the newest medicine on the market called Zyban(sp?)

My parents both smoked for about 35 years, until they tried Zyban - they'd both stopped within a fortnight. Good luck with it Steve.
I can't speak from persona experience as I have never smoked.
However my hubby smoked for over 35 years till last May.
He read the book by Alan Carr - The Easy Way to Give Up Smoking.
Since finishing the book he has not had or really been tempted to have a cigarette.
Several other members of his family who were also heavy smokers have also succeeded using this method
No patches or gum - as all they do is change the method of getting nicotine into your body.
The main thing is that you have to want to give up.
If you don't want to, there is no point even trying.
The benefits are great.
No smelly hair or breath.
Whiter teeth.
Improves the skin.
More energy.
And, if you smoked in the house - you have to redecorate less often!!!!!!
I know things like this aren't easy - so GOOD LUCK Steve!!!!!!!! kiss

Promise that you will spank him WHEN he gives up wink  :lol2: :lol2:
Well done so far with the drink. I do think however that giving smoking and drinking up at the same time will be very hard for you. Perhaps you should get a few months behind you drink free before you consider quitting smoking and go along to your GP and join a smoking cessation clinic which will give you nicotine patches at prescription prices to help you get started.
My husband gave up both at the same time and unfortuately, although he did really well for a few months, he just couldn't keep it up and decided to try giving up the drinking on its own first - which was a success.
Good luck x

Well its easy to say and yes its hard to do but like most things in life if its worth having its gonna hurt somewhere..
If and its a big if you really mean it and you want to stop you will! Sounds easy I know but once you make up your mind just stop. Of course there are times you will be weak and be tempted but for me I found just saying to myself 'I am not going to start Smoking' was enough... instead of I am trying to quit. If you just never light another you win on all counts.... just that one is enough to make you start all over again, yes its a pain but so worth while. After a while it gets easier and easier.. just never give in and light another!
Just never put one to your mouth again...... have your last and be proud you did it!
Mike
Finished a packet at about 5-30pm in a quiet park (chilling after work). Managed all evening but I weakened this morning and bought another packet this morning. Only bought 10 this time in a hope that this will help me cut back.
Giving up the drink was easy really. I think I drank too much because I was stressed and unhappy and strangely the drink relieved the stress but not the unhappiness. Things have turned round a bit so I'm not quite as sad so I don't drink so much.
I'm thinking about the gym as well. A new start to life a new man.

Just been out and seen a difficult customer. She was old and a bit smelly. I gave in to the weed I'm afraid.
Sassy - if a make a new man what sort do you want. I can only make local deliveries.

6' tall, good looking, cooks like Ainsley, sense of humour like Billy Connelly, is romantic and loving and shags all night. Just pop him on the London to Cardiff flight addressed to me and I'll meet him at the airport.
Is that too much of a tall order? No wonder I'm still single

seriously....like all addictions its difficult to stop...having given up the weed seven years ago, I know how hard it is.......my advice for stopping smoking( cant advise on stopping drinkin....yet!)...pick a day well in advance....( so you can phsyic yourself up for it)..if you have any ciggies left before the big day, don`t throw them away....smoke them all supposing you have to sit up all night to do it...then take each day as it comes ,keep yuorself busy especially at times when you know you would normally have a cigarette.
personally I took up jogging, after every jog the amount of shit that I spat out( sorry folks) only served to remind me what damage I had been doing to myself, every time you go jogging the amount of shit gets less( provided you don`t smoke between jogs lol).
The first 2weeks after you stop are the hardest after that it DOES get easier....really it does....it all boils down to will power my friend............go on you know you can do it
just as a post script the first six years three hundred and sixty days, fourteen hours and forty seconds are the hardest......lol
seriously you can do it
Will power there's the thing!
Always thought I had that but beginning to find I havn't. I think I still enjoy it too much but I'm still trying.
What do people think about the gym?
I could aim for a body beautiful but realistically a body okay would do.

the body beatiful .....does`nt exist.....beauty is in the ye of the beholder, etc, etc, etc, etc, blah, blah
the gym could be good as i said once you start gettin rid of the shit in your lungs ,you will get the benefits of the "body"...trust me.........will power is `nt that an american singer ?from the eighties?........"kissing with confidence" I think........there you go ...stop smoking and kiss with confidence.....yeah.......I knew my ramblings were leading me somewhere.......now if I could only remember where I started
