Sorry to hear that WBB,
Did you have the MSN program already installed before you tried re-installing it? If you did then a bit of hacking would get it to work again. Or the firewall may of been tweaked to not allow any messenger programs out or in.
Otherwise you will need the admin user rights if you are going to install another program on your computer. Sorry.
It looks like they have kept a track on your internet usage and have stopped the thing they believe you use most in office hours.
I'll have a loog around for another messenger program but chances are you will have to install it. That may be tricky because of the admin rights you lack.
Hope something out of the blue happens and you can get back to 'working' again though.

Whilst I do not wish to be a spoil sport or anything, it would appear IF they have seen it, and blocked it without any form of rollocking, it has been overlooked, like it never happened...however if somehow you reinstall and carry on with the usage, I would think somewhere they will find out and the shit will hit the fan? Just from personal experience from within a big company? NOT a spoilsport hun, just looking at the IFS...?
Rocky, It wasn't a re-install solution so they can't tell WBB off for installing programs that shouldn't be on.
However I have a distinct feeling that although WBB can now access a messenger program even after they have stopped the initial one things could go pear shaped. Total internet privilages may be taken away if they realise what has happened.
That is only if they are looking at you though, big brother style. If it was a tweaking of an external firewall then all will be fine and they won't know any difference in usage.
You do relise that they can check your history from your computer and if not yours just as easy from another one there are programs and i am unaware of any business which doesn't have one that record your every move some even record what you type. If they found out they could sack you and you would have no case. BE CAREFUL!! lol I fi was you i would read up on how you can cover yourself as best possible.
am not really scared as no one has ever actually told me not to use the computer for any type of reason.....so the worst i think they could do is tell me off.( i am well used to that).
i doubt they will completely stop my internet access as without that i am not able to do any work... even if i was so inclined to! lol
i think i might just be a bit less blatant about it, maybe have the screen minimised when my boss is around and stuff like that.
thanks for all your help
luv a happier WBB
It might be worth checking your employment T&C's as to what constitutes valid internet usage.
The problem isnt always the usage per-say, most companys do give a huge leeway to personal usage. The problem occurs because, in theory, because any communication made while at work is the responsibility of the employer due to the definition of "servent/master" relationship that employment law is based on.
As for blocking they should be able to close the ports that msn uses as the router/firewall, tracking/recording may be more difficult because I believe that msn is encripted not plain text (I may be wrong)
Web site usage is recorded, usually by default, and records the internal IP/name and external IP/name and if more detailed the pages and get/puts that HTTP uses to communicate.
If the company has an "ethicical conduct" clause, then accessing a site such as this could breach that, as could being a swinger.... I dont agree with it, but would you want to take it to tribunal etc if it were invoked. Ethics and morals are too sloppally defined and down to personal interpritation... what I feel and others feel is always going to differ.
As always, valid points. I was just, as I am sure you realise just looking at a worst case scenario. Big brother and that is always an issue, and i guess in esscence, it is a case of you are their to work...I know I am a boring old sod, and we all have little perks, but I was just wishing to be helpful, and NO I have not got huff on because it is just me being friendly. I would hate to see anyone being finished because of this, and have seen things similar at my place, nothing to do with internet, but classed as time out of the job paid for. Sorry if I seem a tad boring.
