if i download documents, when i try to open them in word or notepad, they come up in computer code.
any ideas ?
which version of word are you trying to open them with?
You might try this

It's a word 2007 viewer.
how do i find that info? laptop is about 15 mths old
your best bet is to download the viewer from microsoft, link in previous post. It allows you to view and print any word document up to 2007 but not edit.
Are you sure you're saving them as text ?
Maybe you are saving the html page ?
Sure they're not in .xls format? You'll need Excel to view them if they are, or download the free Open Office.
thnx guys ,will get back to you

It depends on the extension of the document. where you have to for is characters after the final dot then that tells you what type of document.
