Down here in London we have a congestion charge to go into central London which at the moment is it is doing so well they have decided to raise that to and increase the area that it covers, making millions for the company that runs wondering if their are any other citys or towns that will be following this and setting up their own congestion zones?
I believe the whole of the North West will be introducing a congestion charge the next time Blue and Satin hold a party.

why you think i get the train? poor little gem took four ((( count 'em ))) hours to drive 20 miles to it! rolleyes
but da69ve, yep we're getting 'em in leeds. all the gantries are up on the roads leading into the city centre to trial it. but . . and it's quite a big bloody but IMO . . . the charges were supposed to link into the forthcoming supertram park and ride thingumbob, which has now been pulled after 20 years and god knows how many billions.
i suspect a little technicality like there not actually being any trams or park and rides won't get in the way of the council pushing this though all the same!
neil x x x ;)
There's a plan for a congestion charge to be introduced in Edinburgh soon.
Now wouldn't it be a great way of earning extra revenue for local government to do loads of work on all the non chargeable roads thereby forcing people to go through the centre of the city. Better still, make sure that public transport remains under funded and under developed so theres no real alternative to driving in town.
Hmmm, where's the incentive to improve the transport infrastructure just gone? wink
What me? Cynical? Never!!!

There is a tiny bit of good news, it's suspended over Christmas in London apparently........local gov must have run out of (bah)humbugs rolleyes
The best way to make money out of Londers would be to introduce a stupidity tax.
Tax anyone with, say, an IQ less than 60 (almost everyone in London). The absolute beauty of this is that the London population, by virtue of their sub 60 IQ, would be too stupid to move out of London.

Nope they dont have to pay it
IMHO The whole reason for the congestion charge is to reduce the amount of private traffic in town and promote the use of public transport. As taxis are classed as public transport they are exempt from the fee. If a taxi takes even 5 fares a day from people who would normally have driven into town, then thats 5 less cars on the road. Multiply this by the number of black cabs there are and you can see how beneficial it all is. If you started to charge cabs the fee, many would protest by refusing to drive in the congestion zone and more people would return to their cars.

They privatised it!
Wouldn't it be a better idea to 're-invest' the procedes from the congestion charge back into the public transport system, thereby making it more pleasent, safer and efficient?
Surely this would be a better way of coaxing people off the roads, rather than taxing them off the it?
Serendipity (lovely name, swore if I ever bought a new boat, I would call it that)
just picked up on this thread...I had the missfortune to be in central London the other day and drove through the Zone...I have heard since that you have to pay on the day, or face a penalty charge....How true is this?
You also say they have suspended the charge over Christmas. From when to when?

Hi there,
Unfortunately, you do have to pay the charge on the day or in advance. If you have been caught on one of the cameras (a highly likely event) you may find a penalty notice arriving on your doorstep in the not too distant future (Happy Christmas).
As for the suspension of the charge over the christmas break - as far as I am aware it is suspended from next wednesday (it is never applied on bank holidays) until that Friday (31st Dec). Normal charging will recommence on Tues 4th Jan.

you are right the money made from the congestion should go back into public transport but if everyone then used public transport the congestion revenue would decrease meaning they would then raise that and increase the area maybe to cover all of like if everyone was careful and never got parking tickets how long would they keep traffic wardens on the street if their was no fines to pay their wages.

If they are raising the fee, it probably means that the traffic has not reduced as much as they thought it would. Lest you think you are hard done by, many councils around the country are keeping a close eye on the success/failure of the project in London, & will almost certainly introduce something very similar in their own areas.
I drove through the centre of London early on a Sunday morning some months ago, but suppose I'll have to be careful about that in future. Does the penalty notice simply fine you, or does it put points on your licence?
HungreyP is it not also possible that less cars are now going through congestion zone resulting in targets not being met so meaning the charge has to rise so in a way it has been successful but not for the right reasons from the council point of view!
by the way their are no charges at the weekend so you're be ok!

You CAN pay after the fact - but I think it has to be within 24 hours. Well at least that's how it USED to be!.
So here's another thing about the charge - and a way it affects you without you realising it.
Think about all those shops right in the centre of London. Think of all the vans that make deliveries to those shops. They all have to pay a congestion charge.
Do you think the delivery/courier companies absorb those charges? Nope. They pass them onto their customer.
Think their customer absorbs those charges? Nope. They pass them onto their customer - YOU the item purchaser.
Same goes with all the fuel hikes. Fuel goes up - delivery charges go up - item prices go up.

No, it does not.

Well that's possible. However the objectives of the scheme are to reduce congestion, rather than make a profit. Whatever the truth is, this scheme is certainly the subject of considerable research because its the first time it has been attempted in the UK. And it is that research that other councils will be examining, when they decide what form their own schemes will take. If the research shows that it is a good way to make a profit, but no use for reducing congestion, then those who oppose such schemes will be able to use this evidence to prevent new ones being set up.

That's a relief. biggrin
I think that congestion is just used as a cover, because if targets are not reached they just up the price its just another stealth tax! the car is just the easiest to keep adding tax too!
