contraceptive injections

hello, just wondering if anyone knew about the injections you can have every 3 months instead of being on the pill that stop ur periods and how long they take to work? ive just had my first one (depo-provera). i was told i wud hav a little spotting for a few months as it wud take time to settle in and stuff, but i still got my hopes u i wudnt (and then i did and it was all tears)
has anyone esle had experience with it? smile

just so i know what to expect!

i use to take provera but for different reasons obviously lol

I was on the depo for ages, but it made me fatter and i thought it was a bit un-natural to go for that long without a period! I was lucky, my periods stopped straight away, but everyone is different, and i was warned about the spotting too, lol!

I have been on depo for like 5 years!
I love it!!!
Yes it does stop your period, but I had really heavy period for a couple of weeks - went back - they gave me the pill to take as well for one week - then I have never had a period since - I LOVE i! But my periods were unusually heavy and long.. so maybe its just me.. but I thought it was fab!
I lost loads of weight to begin with and put it all on again.. My boobs have gone from a B to a DD - but that might be natural anyways?!?!
Yes.. Im a bit bigger than I was when I started it.. but I was 16 when I started it - so Im not remotely surprised...
I would forget to take the pill - so its ideal for me...
but each perosn is to their own.
I had 6 months break - coz they said I should - just to check everything was still going ok... when I went back on it - it was fine.. got a bit of thrush - but thats just the hormones rushing round your body and it went in like 2 days and it wasnt oo bad anyway!
I love it!
But you have to do what you feel is right for you.. if you have any concerns, the family planning nurse has always been really nice to me (in 3 different FPCs) or NHS direct is always good!

Depo is great if it works for you. I had it for a year but i didnt get on with it. I had terrible mood swings and was crying alternately with being hypo - poor bf at the time!!
Towards the end though i was just bleeding all the time - ugh not nice when ur on constantly for 3months!!!

I was on it for a couple of years and i went from a size 14 to a size 20 practically over night mad

Apart from that i never had a period the whole time i was on i guess it depends from person to person,see how you go with it,you can always stop biggrin

I had that - but I told the FPC and they gave me the pill for like 1 week and then I never had a period again... I think the pill helps to kinda 'reset' you hormones!
But sorry to hear you had such a hard time of it!

They may not stop ur periods... it works different on everybody. I had the Implanon in my arm, the plastic rod thingy.... had to have it removed as it didn't agree with me. My mood swings were terrible...i was getting to the stage where i was pushing my very good close friends away. The injection is the very same as the Implanon... its just in way of injection.... in my eyes.... Not the best thing to use!!!! Also i don't like needles!

I have had the injection and had no problems at all. My periods stopped virtually straight away and I had no mood swings, spotting or any other problems. I have now got the Implanon (Implant in my upper arm) and apart from a very sore arm for about a week after it was done, I have had no problems. It has not stopped my periods this time but I get about two days of spotting every month!

Two of my female relatives were on it and both got severely depressed. My younger relative put on weight and stopped caring about life. My older relative became a phobiac to the point she could not even drive to work. Both had bleeding throughout the use. The relationship is through marriage so they are not related by blood to each other.
When I first realised what was happening to my older relative, I did some research and came upon a website where women put their experiences down. Let me tell you, it was shocking stuff! My older relative decided to come off it and it took some time for her to find herself and begin to manage with everyday tasks. The younger relative stopped it about a year ago and in this year she dropped 4 dress sizes and went back to her happy go lucky self.
I am sure you can search the internet for latest info on Depo Provera and then decide whether you want to go ahead with it or not.

Take a week to kick in, then you usually have your next injection 11 weeks after the initial one, but can be done up to 12 weeks, if you dont get it done within 12 weeks then you usually have to wait for your cycle to begin and complete again.
Spotting is common at any time during your first injection, and sometimes during your second one, they should stop after that, at which point you either have no real periods at all, or your usual ones will resume.
However, my girlfriend has been on it for almost a year now, so and she had her last one about 4 weeks ago. until this one her periods were really messed up. she wouldnt have one for a week or two, then would be constantly on until a week before it was due again (they couldnt see any reason for this because usually if they mess up, its towards the end of the injection time) although shes had a couple of medical problems on going that may have been the reason, anyway it appears that this time her periods are just on to a normal scale now, which is much appriciated on my behalf, wasnt much fun before, dont mind having sex when shes on, but doesnt make it tempting to go down on her when shes pouring! however, now... cant wait till tonight
ANYWAY too much detail im sure, just they are irregular things at the best of times hey, and pumping hormemones into you could well make them more unpredicatable, so always carry a pad or whatever, and dont worry if you dont have one or are constantly on or anything...
