What are the most controversial sporting moments that you can remember and did they have any effect of you or change your opinion about anything?
For me there are two moments that stick in my mind from my childhood.
First up the 100m Final at 1988 Olymipics. Always remember waking up the next morning after watching what had been called the best race ever to find out Ben Johnson had been tested positive for drugs. I didnt come to any conclusions or revaluations about this but it did make me think about why people would use drugs to cheat and how the hell he thought he would get away with it.
Second: 1986 world cup quarter final England Vs Argentina. We all know about the Hand of God rolleyes One thing thats always stayed with me about this is the way it made me judge one person, Maradonna. I often here commentators say about Maradonna you dont judge someone entirely by one action. Well sorry! but I do. To be able to deliberately cheat and then pretend like nothing happened when you know full well the whole world can see on TV cameras is a personality defining trait in my opinion. Its something I could never or have never done playing football or any other sport. I would never want to win in that way mainly because I want to beat the other team and for them to respect me because I/we beat them fairly, if that makes sense. I would find it incredibly hard to deal with the world knowing that I had cheated in that way to win a football match.
Anyway, what are yours? biggrin
Michael shumacher crashing into Damon hill on purpose in the last race of the season to steal the drivers championship evil
i lost interest after that
Niel Hogson finishing before Chris Walker in the last round of the British Superbikes, 2000, and winning the championship, due to Chris's bike breaking down on the last few laps.... Chris was ahead and we all thought he had it in the bag, until disaster struck....
And, always being the last to be picked for a team sport at school, and when I was picked, stuck in goal....FFS

A dodgy points decision that went against me in the ABAs on my last appearance....
Sorry, it's not all about me, but it still fucking rankles....
Being a Leeds fan, the disallowed goals of Peter Lorimer against Chelsea in the 1967 FA Cup Semi Final and Bayern Munich in the 1975 European Cup Final, together with Jeff Astle's "goal" in 1971 which gave the title to Arsenal will never be forgotten
But much loved and laughed about by Chelsea supporters. lol
I do not laugh about it Max....well not much anyway. wink

Just wait.....another 5 seasons or so and we will be back to get our revenge!!
It's not so much any single dfefining moment - but the continual drip feed of reports of drug-enhanced performances has left me with the knowledge that any winner may have got there by cheating.
Even legal interventions strike me as cheating - like sleeping in a pressure chamber to increase the oxygen uptake of your blood. And those bows for archery which look like something off Star Wars. To my mind - it is only practice and skill that should be measured. Equipment should be supplied centrally and be identical - possibly adjusted for people's size/weight, but that's it. And in the case of archery - what's wrong with a long bow?
It means that where in previous Olympics, European championships and even National Bowls championships I have been thrilled by the efforts and peformances. Now I couldn't give a damn. Let's get the PEOPLE back into the sports.
Harald Schumacher (is there an exclusivity agreement for cunty behaviour for people bearing this name? even Joel Schumacher, he made Batman and Robin ffs) on Battiston in the 1982 world cup semi final (West Germany v. France).
Battiston is through on goal, Schumacher comes and doesn't even go for the ball, he bodychecks him. Battiston need oxygen as he was stretchered off, lost about 4 teeth as well.
Was Schumacher sent off I hear you ask? Not even close, West Germany got a goal kick for his efforts.
Combine that with the disgraceful match against Austria in the group stages and the Germans really must have been about as popular as ebola in football circles in 1982.
Still pondering Contador attacking Schlek on the Port de Balès ......dirty cheating Spanish bastard.....not sure where I stand on the ethics of it yet

Or Ayrton Senna on Alain Prost a few years earlier with the same result.

Sadly at the highest level its the tiny things that make the difference between being first and not being first.
Do u recall Karpov and Korchnoi in '78. Quite put me off the game.
