smile well you did ask, here goes;
Florida Keys - Islamorada May 2006
I've been a keen fisherman for about 35 years, my biggest ambition was to catch a Tarpon on a fly rod, hooking one of these monsters is tricky enough using a fly instead of live or dead bait, landing it is another challenge, most of the fish hooked never see the boat.
This year I was lucky and was able to go after one, we got up early and were the first out there, our guide put us on the Number One spot, there were two of us fishing and we took turns standing on the front of the boat holding our fly rods waiting for the fish to come through, the guide stood on a platform at the back and pointed out the fish as they approached, every 30 minutes or so he would spot some about 200 yards away, so you wait and when they get within casting distance you shoot the fly out, strip it in to try and get a take.
The first shot I had at them, I got Tarpon Fever, bloody fly went the wrong way, I managed to wrap the line around my rod tip, I was way too excited but managed to calm down after a couple of missed shots.
We went on like this for most of the day, sometimes the big fish followed the flies, saw the boat and turned away, then I got lucky, I cast at a nice one in front, didn't get a follow and as it swam by the side of the boat did a pretty crappy cast that manged to land in front of it, started the retreive and it turned, followed and took it.
Then it took off, the line on the deck whistled through the rod rings and the spool on the reel screemed asthe fish striped off line, I watched the fish leap 6 feet out of the water and then off it went again, in the meantime the guide slipped a bouy onto the anchor (well pole), started the engine and started chasing it, the Tarpon had took the fly line and about 150 yards of backing off of the reel.
As the boat chased it I got the backing onto the reel, when I had a few turns of the fly line on we started the fight, this was pretty much gaing every inch of line I could without putting too much strain on the leader which had a section of 20lb breaking strain in it to comply with IGFA rules, it was bloody hard work with a one handed fly rod, the guide estimated that the Tarpon was about 120lbs, it was about 7 foot long and now that I had it on the fly line was towing the boat along.
The fight went on for just under an hour, the fish jumped about 6 times and just before each jump I could feel a surge of power through the rod, followed by the fish running and taking extra line.
I used my palm to slow the spool on the reel during some of the runs, after the battle I had a blister as a result.
We got towed about 1.5 miles, the fish was pretty much beaten, I got it to the top and manged to turn its head, as we were closing in to land it either I put too much force on or its tail cut the line dunno but it got away.
I was absolutely gutted, the photos taken when the fish jumped showed only splashes, but thats fishing, if we had managed to land we would have carefully got it into the boat, taken some photos then towed it along to revive it prior to release.
Even though it got away, I'll never forget the excitement and the way the fish battled and that first time it leapt out of the water.
And Shireen, I'll get the pics up real soon :)
I can't believe I'm daft enough to sit here and read that
It even sounds quite exciting redface

Steve, it was nice to see something more personal from you on the forum kiss
Im sure st3v3 is J R Heartly you know...
I know it's annoying, not just annoying, but infuriating when someones that passionate about something, tells a story and someone butts in with something off topic.......
But by eck St3v3 - why am I imagining you wrestling a Tampax? rotflmao :rotflmao:
Had to re-read it :lol2: Most people catch an old boot or something when out fishing (my brother caught his wife for example lol ), but the tampax is the most ridiculous vision ever :rotflmao:
