I regularly post on another (unnamed) forum that is 90% crappy and pointless threads. I think you guys have got it good on here in terms of quality of posts and the people that post them

So I just wondered what selectivity is in place to differentiate between the two.

The aim of both threads is to reduce work overload for the mods.
From my perspective the steam room is there for people to rant - they don't have to be about the same thing and aren't posted to provoke discussion.
This thread has been started to provoke a discussion about the quality of threads currently in the cafe and what, if anything, can be done about it.
Some people are stating types or styles of threads that they feel contribute little to the Cafe, others are doing the same saying that they think they do contribute to the Cafe.
It's not ranting and people are expecting discussion on their posts and the content.
This isn't the same as the steam room, which also gets cleared out periodically so none of the rants are there to stay.
Unless this discussion turns nasty it will stay for users to view in the future.
Seems totally different to me.

Is it possible that the site could have a voting button?
This would allow contributors to vote whether a topic continues or not.
Some kind of algorithm would need to be incorporated. But in simple terms if:
Supposing at 3am in the morning 5 people were logged in. A topic was posted. Each voted for yes or no. The majority got the vote and the thread either stayed or was deleted.
A topic which stayed on the forum could continue to be added to and voted on. Adding to the thread required voting. A mere click of the button (or would that be too much?).
A deleted thread could be started again and would either live or die, depending on the take up by the useres logged in.
This process would make the threads live in the here and now like a real conversation.
A successful thread could be considered for long term saving. This would save the work load for the mods.

I have gone back to last Saturday night at just to have a look at some of the thread themes that have been posted, up to now, about Thursday, about 5 days.

25 x I need help/ technical or otherwise

7 x Jokes
4 x Congratulations
If I were able to answer perhaps a third of the help questions and posted “hi†or “you look great†or “ that’s a funny/good link†or “that’s funny a good joke†or “congratulationsâ€, just by posting on these alone, starting from scratch, I would be on 62 posts at an average of 12.4 posts a day. In less than 3 months I’d have a full blue bar and be considered a seasoned member and contributed f**k all!
If there was a sticky for each of those topics, we could have removed 73 threads in 5 days.
It’s a start!

Some people that are offline would not be able to vote but if they come back online they may want a thread that was previously voted out.
I think it would be way to complicated to introduce and would result in more of a workload for the mods and go against the whole idea of a discussion forum.

Conversations tend to be organic and flexible, and emotional too. They don't follow a flow chart.
Formal discussions and debates invove agenda and procedures, and these run appropriately as they should do under democratic principles etc.
But the forum is about a variety of mindsets integrating and evolving as they communicate. Its organic and at times anarchic. Its the nature of these things.

Having experienced message boards with reputation systems, I would predict that the above idea would result in people signing up multiple sockpuppets to vote, thereby making the results completely invalid. It would, I believe, cause a lot of ganging up. I also don't think deletion would accomplish anything but resentment.

Ive got to agree, people who have been coming on here for years should respect and understand that any newbie starting a tread does not know if its been done on here before 6,9 or 12 months ago.
Do we need a room like an old folks home for them that have seen it all, heard it all and done it all.
I think one of the things which make it difficult is the amount of crap threads posted by the older members which take off simply because they are able to bounce off of others here so well. I've seen countless of crap subjects take off to be some of the funniest threads going, and I'd hate to see these disappear. Unfortunately the newer members haven't yet established the same kind of interaction with other members so when they try to do the same their threads simply end up littering the board.

A new member might post a thread stating that they had injured their hand on a desk at work.
Response? Yeah, and, this is going where?

I can guaruntee a response from Easy, NIL, and others here ripping the piss out of the fact I work in a secure unit and end up being savaged by a desk, and how my C&R training should start off with soft furnishings.........
Eager posts a thread asking about sunburnt nostrils. We all think WTF he on about now?!
A newbie does the same and we just think WTF?
Much the response is down the the difference between knowing a personality or not.
Course, there are also crap threads which are just.......crap.

Thankyou Sarge, this the the first thread I have read cover to cover in weeks.
It is a catch 22 situation, there is lots and lots of really crap threads (and I'm probably guilty as well ). Happy cats summed it up with his list of threads. So many look at me/them threads with even more look at me/them posts inside. Also the Hello threads are getting larger every day as more and more members join. The problem is that the mods/mark don't want to take away peoples 'freedom of speech' away, so there doesn't seem to be an easy answer.
Personally a couple of more stickies for something like "hello's", "help" etc may reduce the overload on the forums, and this can be cleared out much the same way the steam room is. This way there less duplicate threads on the forum. I believe the steam room idea is working really well. This also stops the mods having to troll through hundreds of threads.
The shit bin seems a good idea as well.
As for duplicate threads - the search button isn't really a friend all the time, you can type something in and get 2000 results, the thread you want to post may have been duplicated but its not always that easy to find it
Obviously the time has come to do something about it when Mark and a long standing mod like sarge are unhappy with the way things are going.

I've always thought the "If you don't like it you don't have to read it" argument was a bit... well, stupid to be honest: If I don't read it, how do I know whether I like it?
Surely if you find a thread relevant to you you post a reply. If its not relevant and uninteresting don't reply. Its simple really. I don't see why mods have to get involved. I am a memeber of various football forums and one in particular is full of puerile posts which have nothing to do with football but its popular and the people are happy on there so I don't have a problem. My point is if you don't like something in the end you leave.

For the mods, if you don't like reading all the crap guess you have 3 options...
1. resign your mod status (no conscription in this army eh Sarge?)
2. invent a variable and dynamic web based thread filter which highlights only those questionable words in posts that mean you NEED to take a look. Patent the idea, make a killing and increase the number of people who want to shag you exponentially.
3. Post a thread saying you are gonna cut the crap threads. Ooops already been done

I think that the forum is representative of life in general. Although it is designed to focus on the swinging lifestyle, the abundance of additional material suggests that sex is being discussed enough. Other topics are there appropriately and in proportion to the main subject of rumpy pumpy.
The swinging attitude and backdrop has been responsible for the abundance of talk and debate. So I think its riding a plateau of achievement, from which its difficult to see a brand new horizon. But maybe that's all there is too it.

I think trying to rectify could destroy this site, if it got to the stage that individuals decided what should and shouldn't be posted. As I said it is up to individuals to post more interesting subjects and ignore the crap ones and that should sort it.

I don't think anyone's complaining about other topics per se. The way I read it, what's getting people down is material better suited to the chatroom or PM and posts that are just posted for the sake of posting. You and I can avoid some of that by ignoring anything started by those we regard as the culprits, at the cost of missing out on any good stuff that's mixed in with it, but the mods don't even have that choice.

I didn't say not to read them and it dosn't take that long to click on a few pages to see if anything interesting was said. I find threads on penis size tedious so don't bother to contribute unless i reply saying I find it so.
