John Peel has died.
Thats awful and such a damn loss sad

Heart attack whilst on holiday. Gutted. sad
The BBC story about this is here
I really don't know what to say. There's no one in the world like John Peel.
This hurts more than when we lost Douglas Adams.
Steve Wright has just played 'Teenage Kicks' - the song John Peel wants played at his funeral! I was VERY close to tears indeed, for someone I never knew it's a weird reaction for me!
I can think of no better thing to say for my 500th post than this:
No one on this site is ever going to make me feel half as good as I did when I first heard John Peel playing one of my tracks.
John Peel was part of my teenage years, I took him to bed each night under the covers. He had a voice lkike no other. It is a sad loss.
Oh Shit!
A true music lover and a true Koppite
He was one of the most modest and influential of music broadcasters. I was still happy to find him on the radio even now, long after my teenage years when I would follow his show every night religiously.
He was such a nice guy too. I sat next to him at football for about 4 seasons - his family are all Ipswich Town fans and they used to drag him along - and a nicer more down to earth guy you could never want to meet. Such a sad day.
I didnt know till I just logged on.
Im gutted I grew up with listening to John Peel. Many of my favourite groups got their first chance on his show. He was such a great guy. I met him with my kid brother when he was in a local band. John had heard good things about them and came to a gig in he played a load of their material and they had a few top 40 hits and a couple of reasonable albums. My brother still makes a living out of his music but John Peel was definately responsible for their and many other aspiring bands breaks
He was a one off, and this is the end of anera. RIP John you will be sorely missed
He will be missed by many, I, too use to take him to bed with me and listen late into the night.
Sarah
I just rang my brother to tell him the news. He hadnt heard and literally broke down. For someone with more than 20 years in the industry to feel that way is just an indication of John Peels stature
I saw it on screen earlier.
Gutted.
What a bloke.
Will be well missed.
RIP
He used to say "not sure if this is at the right speed - but does it matter?"
Music was just music to him - if it was good it was good
RIP John
Teenage Dreams So Hard To Beat.
Clare texted me when she saw the thread and told me and i'm absolutely gutted.I used to listen to him all the way he was on his radio show was like he was there in the room with you talking just to you.
Its a sad,sad loss and i don't think there will be anyone like him again.
Peel has had such a profound influence; played most of the soundtrack to my life. Like others on here I used to listen to him late at night in bed, homework not finished (and even stick the cassette mic up against the radio e.g. the 1st Siouxsie and the Banshees session, the Fall, Clint Eastwood, Junior Delgado). I'm really, really going to miss him.
OMG !!!!!!!!!! I'm gobsmaked !!
im gutted, hes a legend. i will so miss him on radio 1.
Just heard on the radio, someone described him as having run his own pirate radio station from the heart of the BBC....
RIP
Just come back from seeing Lenny Henry and he dedicated his show to John Peel. Which was nice.
So sad...
He was a passionate man about his music and always ready to give new talent a chance.
He was the one to introduce the Beatles to the American listening public when he was a DJ in the States.
His programme 'Home Truths' was a joy to listen too.
One of the last of the DJs who used knowledge, talent and personality in his work. Not like to modern day (so-called) DJs who have difficultly in stringing enough words into a sentence without swearing.
He is a great loss

cant believe it.....john peel was a great ambassador of many a teenager in the 80's and 90's....he will be sadly missed
john peel once said " the one band i could ever only apply the term "Madchester" to was the Happy Mondays......
sophie and nige
After announcing his death Radio One played John's favourite song, Teenage Kicks by The Undertones. It's typical of the state of British radio today that the no-mark presenter declared the track to be called 'A Teenage Kid'.
I've already said it on this thread but may you Rest In Peace John. Your wide-ranging passion for music inspired me to take to the airwaves on the university radio station and you'll never know how much you meant to us all.
Gutted...
The man had such an influence on people growing up and trying to deal with teenage angst, including myself.
The irony is so many people will miss him, but i'm sure if he were still alive he'd wonder what all the fuss was about... and then slap on a Junglist Country & Western remix.
Pure class...
