:fuckinghell: :Can anybody help?I've been trying to run scan disc and defrag on my P.C. But it tells me that it has tried 10 times, and that i have other applications open. But i know i haven' P.C. is starting to get slower and slower, does anybody know of anything i can do to rectify this problem, without having to reset back to factory settings?Would be grateful for anybodys input and advice.
Re-start in safe mode and do NOT under any circumstances use the net (including email) whilst you are defragging.
If you don't do safe mode, the defrag will restart every time data changes on your machine.

Obviously something running in the background. Take your computer offline to the net, make sure everything on your app bar and task bar is closed/disabled, then open your task manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and click the "Processes" tab. Anything you don't recognise that's not a system file and displays anything other than zero for CPU usage is suspect. I'd be inclined to run a virus scan and then defrag.
Sounds like a spy on your computer. I use Norton Antivirus but it isn't the best at spotting spyware programs that will slow your computer down. Go to enter 'adaware' in the search panel. At the top of the list should be a downloadable program. It's completely free. I was shocked that my antivirus was missing so much. O yeah, select run on the pop up. It will remain on your desktop so use it once a week.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your advice,i will try tomorow .Your tips and suggestions, are a sign that there are people who still care in the world.
Yep by the sounds of it you've either got spyware, or more likely a virus running in the background.
I'd say if you've not got an antivirus download something like AVG from Grisoft and get anitspyware like Adaware or Spybot and let them run and see if they find anything.
I've never been able to run defrag except in safemode. I never thought that I would have a virus or spyware running. Do you think I have?
My PC is used by other so I am always running adaware and spybot and I have upto date Norton anti virus. When I took over this machine I deleted 700 items with my first run of spybot!!! But now I only ever delete about 1 a week.
Celticq, have you got your screen saver switched on?
If so everytime that cuts in - it resets the defrag

Yes I do. Hurray hurray. Simple answer. Thanks.
Some antivirus programs interfere with Defrag. Do as Vix says and run it in "safe mode".
If you have a large hard drive (10GB) or more then it'll take forever to defrag your HD. I would suggest you do as others have said and install spyware detection software and antivirus software, as well as a firewall if you're on broadband.
A good suggestion is similar to what Ice Pie suggested, except if there's nothing you're sure about in the processes, type the exact name into google and it'll bring up links to websites which have exact descriptions of what the process does, what program it's from and the danger level it poses. Not all antivirus and spyware software detects everything, so manually checking each process can sometimes root out the well hidden ones.
It also helps in deciding what applications you can close to free up memory.
In addition, you can free up memory permanently by clicking on Start --> Run --> typing in MSCONFIG then clicking on the STARTUP tab and manually checking and unchecking those programs you want to run when the computer starts**
**Warning: You should only attempt this if you really know what you're doing otherwise you could bugger up your PC
