Sorry to hear about the team...... Penalities.... again.....
Feel free to abuse this thread to "let it all out"
Come on Murray!
Scots to the 1/4 finals!!!!! hehehheheheeheh
:;)
Phew thank goodness that bit of nonsense is over. Can we get back to reality now?
biggrin
Ok, I'm not a footie fan but I do feel for the poor guys/girls who were on the edges of their seats for the penalties - a horrible way to be out of something so big. Bit like tossing a coin to see if you get divorced or not.
Is that the tennis? *chuckle*
thats been kinda overshadowed i think
So... if your'll remember the "Question Time" programme with that Dimbleby guy
Is is the scotish flag.. the english flag or the union jack?
Union Flag unles it's on a ship/boat then it's the Union Jack. Scottish flag is the Saltire (it's the name of the cross shape).
England has the Flag of St George. Who was (I think) Yugoslavian with a Palestinian mother. The Dragon he fought was reputed to be an organisation (religious/political) similar to the Knights Templar - 'The Dragons' I guess. Vlad Dracul (Vlad the Impaller aka Dracula) was a member/leader of this organisation - Dracul means Dragon.
Sorry - my trivia section got hold of the keyboard there - it's back in its cage now, munching it's way through the library. :giggle:

You are right - at least his dad was - so says Wikipaedia.
Check them out for more details, fascinating subject.
As for the flags, save them for next time - hope is eternal, even if Rooney and his tantrums aren't (thank goodenss).
Bottom line is england are s***, all talk and hype ,dick heads buy all england stuff , as the song goes seen it all b4, with intelligent rooney doing his stuff, in all honestly we would of got stuffed in next round if we got through, so i will enjoy the sun and forget about footballers who are paid thousands to act like spoilt brats, ah thats better
<<<<<<<< hugs Michael Walker hugs>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Can I join in the hugs?
Was there a match on then?
Although I personally haven't cried about England losing the game, I did watch it and do feel for the players. Yes they are wealthy pampered men, but at the end of the day, whats inside them all is the same. They are just older versions of the boys who played in the street morning noon and night and only ever dreamed of putting on an England shirt.
Having recently followed my team to the Millennium Stadium and they won on a penalty shoot out I now have a better understanding of what its like on both sides of the coin, and this one really really sucks!!
Apologies for getting all emotional about the footy but I'd just like to say "Well Done Lads"
Feel absolutely gutted and dont think i can talk about the match, too much went on.
As Arnie said:They'll be back!
Ok,Ok,I know he really said" I'll be back" but what the heck eh?
Oh dear........ we lost on penalties...............again.............
we had a young, immature male sent of for loosing his cool and lashing out with his foot,
down to ten men we lost, the poor boy crucified in the press, threats to his family etc etc to evolve into a matrure man, good ambassador of the sport and captain of his national squad.............................
anyone else getting a sense of deja voo here................... I seem to remember a youn slip of a lad by the name of Beckham...................
I know, I know its sad..................but at the end of the day...................you know what im gonna say now dont you.......................
its only a game thats meant to be a bit of fun................
( light blue touch paper, retire to a suitable distance and watch the fireworks)
not a big footy fan, but yes its sad they put up a bloody good fight, especially down to ten men
biggrin
was extreamly funny when i drove sonia into mansfield for a night out ....to see all of the mature males of this part of the country decked out in red and white ..arguing like adolecents.....................it`s only a game!!!...just thourght id echo that biggrin
Did I miss something ?
GF2
It is very sad because they are the best group of individual players this country has had access to for a very long time. Unfortunately the man in charge was muppett and was unable to organise his star studded cast into an effective teamIt is not The Roo's fault, or Beckham or any of the players who missed the penalties it is the fault of the FA for allowing Sven to stay on when he had handed in his resignation.
But this is not news it has been said many, many times before. Goodbye Sven we will now look forward to more of the same - only Sven and Tord are leaving - the rest of the coaching staff stay on with 2nd in charge moving up to main man. He will lose his job when we crash out of Euro 2008 and then we can all get excited again about World Cup 2010.
Finally some stats:
England last won a major tournament in 1966 - I was 5 yeras old.
I have greeted every major tournament since then with the same excitement and anticipation only to feel let down and frustrated at quarter and semi final stages. In 2010 I will be 49. I wonder?......................................................................................
Actuallly guys.... i'm gonnna throw in my two pences worth
Ok.. question for you
how did we loose????
PENALITIES
how did we loose before.... PENALITIES...... time before that...PENALITIES
(anyone noticing a theme here)
Maybe..... JUST MAYBE...... its something to do that they cant take a penalty.. and why would this be
BECAUSE..... they are BRICKING IT! Why would they be bricking it... the MEDIA
I have to say.... you cant blame a manager for a team failing to take penalities.... its player verses goalie.
What he said
During the first half of extra time I remember 1 of the commentators saying "The best thing we can do now is hold out for penalties" WTF?????
Not only have we got a terrible track record for penalty shoot outs, but we've not even got Rooney or Beckham taking them.
Before the start of the game and seeing how we'd played the previous 4 matches I thought we were going to be out played and out classed.
Within the first 10 minutes I actually saw a different side playing and actually started to think we had a chance.
I think the boys did themselves proud with the way they played and battled and I just hope that is reflected in the tabloids.
Oh and if the Portuguese don't win, they still have hope for success in the next Olympic Diving competition.
Why the surprise?
A manager who still thinks tactics are those little mints in a plastic container. A manger who takes about 5 players who aren't fit along with a 17 year old who hasn't even played a first team game for his club. Things will not be any different under the just as awful Mclaren.

I don't agree
They were just not good enough to win the win the game in normal time and that is why it went to penalties. Penalties is a lottery and in gambling you normally lose.
Sven admitted they had been practising penalties every day for five weeks but they failed at the crucial time because of a lack of confidence - ie bottle - that is because they were still playing a confusing game, out of recognised positions and a 'brand new' formation. There was no 'winning' mentality and they were all obviously affected by the criticisms levelled at them over the last three weeks.
You can't rely on penalties you should play to win in normal time and win in style, we have the players to do that - just not the tactical awareness and strength of management
Ah well they have 4 years to practice penalty taking in readiness for the next World Cup Meanwhile we can look forward to a sport which really tests the stamina for hours at a time and for 3 weeks - the Tour De France Be interesting to see Rooney having a tantrum after being jostled in one of the sprint finishes No penalty shoot outs here but riders with plenty of balls especially in the Pyrenees, but dont expect to see many English riders in yellow! rolleyes
I am actually quite encouraged by this thread. I thought I was going to have to be :gagged:, so it is quite reassuring to find that not everyone has been totally wrapped up in the football.
After all, it is well known that I am not a football fan (I have not seen a single moment of the World Cup and didn't even know England was playing today redface) and I don't want to cause offence to those who I know really do enjoy the game.
I have one question though. How is that professional footballers who are paid more in a week than most of us see in a whole year can't score from the penalty spot? dunno I am sure I couldn't do it either, but then I have always been crap at football and don't pretend otherwise.
I am expecting people to come on here and say that it is the pressure. I can see that - but this is their job. It's what they are supposed to do. A heart surgeon is under tremendous pressure, but he is expected to be able to handle it. I would certainly hope he (or she!) can if he/she is going to operate on me!
The Portuguese were under the same pressure and, presumably, were able to handle it (as I said, I didn't actually see it so this is an assumption).
It is probably best that I don't say what I really think of Rooney :gagged: :gagged:
As someone else said, perhaps we can back to reality now.
Will
What happened?
Was there a game of football? Oh! Yawn. I understand it didn't go too well then!
Oh well, never mind!
I've seen grown men actually crying over their pint of beer in pubs over the years because the match went the wrong way! What on earth is going on?
I've not seen one game this time around, and why not? Just lucky I guess! Wake me up when it's all over someone.
Mind you.....................watch me change my tune when the six nations starts lol
Wow Foxy Lady you's my hero..ine can I have your autorgraph plse?

What both of you said.
For the record I don’t usually watch Football, I not into sports much in any way, but I do understand the emotion that is generated by the big events like the Football or Rugby world cup, and do find myself sharing that emotion with the true fans of the game.
My take, England played better Football last night with ten men than they had done in the previous matches with eleven. Rooney is young and inexperienced, but he will get better and the Portuguese players were IMHO asking for a good stamp in the nads. :kick:
As for penalties, yes the guys taking them are paid lots of money, but so is the guy trying to stop them. Factor in luck and nerves and it’s not hard to see how people miss. Remember we only lost by one penalty, the Portuguese players missed too.
What I find really interesting though is this. I belong to another forum, not a swingers forum, but one dedicated to a pastime usually associated with anoraks. The language, name-calling and general abuse flashing back and forth on this subject, is a wonder to behold. No, really it would shock you all to the core to see it, and would never be tolerated on this forum. Yet here they are, a bunch of stuffy old button counting history pedants, using the kind of language that would make a swinger blush and run for the mods. As my old mum would say “There’s nawt as queer as folk” . blink

ssssssshhhhhhh.....you evil woman... we are still banned from our last "day trip"........ smile :) :) :)
back to the penalty subject... i noticed the difference between the germans taking the penalties on friday and the ones we took yesterday...
the germans looked confident striding up , ran up at a million miles an hour and put their foot thru the ball.. at no point did you think they were going to miss..
whereas the english... the look on gerrard and esepcially lampard beforehand looked like one of total terror!!! took the run up, slowed down to put the keeper off (which never works).. and tried to place it
probably the reason why england have lost 5 of the last 6 penalty shoot outs they have been in... and germany haven't lost one for 30 years!!!
i am glad sven had gone.... but as far as i am concerned mclaren is guilty by association!!! they have ruined the best chance of winning something we have had in ages....
"gutted" of tyneside.....
