I read a lot of books. I once set myself a goal to read a book by every author on the fiction shelves of the local library, such is my joy in reading.
I have never really enjoyed reading books online, getting the font and brightness right and the page layouts well it has never really felt the same. Until I discovered Amazons kindle application for pc. Well the app is free and an awful lot of out of copyright books are free too. And it works and I think its wonderful. This is by the way of a heads up but I also wondered if anybody had views of this or alternatives or experience of the kindle notepad which may make a nice xmas present for a swinging bibliophile.
Yes there is its resale value on ebay lol
I'm thinking on getting J a Kindle although she is a die hard hard copy book and library user. She might love or hate it. I'm not sure whether its worth the risk.
Download onto your PC and see what you think. It's not gonna be exactly the same as the actual kit, but it might give you a feel for it.
i had the sony ebook when it first came out.....
there are two reasons that i enjoy it...... i am always on my travels and books when you have one bag dont take proity esp when you go away up to three weeks at time so this for me was very benifical..... the other i have a tinted screen which all i have to do is place over the ereader and i dont have bouncing letters where as with a book i always have to put the tint over each page... and yip im lazy lol.. my read has a ereader and its really good to use....
i love to see all the books i have read all lined up but times are changing and i believe books like viedos will soo be out of fashion :/
I love proper books, the smell the feel, knowing that when I get into a good book I won't put it down until I have read every last page
Now an avid library user/ charity shop buyer since Dek refuses to buy me any more (I usually read 3+ a week) I also like to keep the books I read even though I may never read them again. Sometimes I look at a book on the shelf and remember where I was/when I read it
I wouldn't thank you for an electronic reader, a well used book has excellent charm something I doubt can ever be replaced
Interesting contributions thank you.
Yes Flower as you know I too was once a book dealer and jolly profitable it was too. I do regard the day I realised those shelves and shelves of books could be sold for hard cash as one of great liberation. Subsequently I allow myself 5 shelves of books. Once these become full I sell or otherwise dispose of a shelf full.
Thought about getting 1 but I love the smell of a proper book to much (sounds weird).. I have been limited to the amount of books I buy now cause I am a nightmare round the charity shops and am running out of room and wont get rid of any..
I don't think it's a matter of one or the other. Electronic books are great for travelling especially, and 'real' books are nice to hold - and less expensive to drop in the bath.
When e-readers do non-fiction as well as they do fiction I'll be happy to get one. Most of my books are factual - most of them have beautiful illustrations - I want to see them if I read the book - so at the moment Kindles and such like are no major use for me. I have the Kindle app on my phone for the occasional trip.
The idea is fantastic and I wish I could use one, but looking at a screen constantly gives me the same feeling as travel sickness. So it is real books for me, but the idea of having all your books on one implement is brilliant.
If I could, I would, but I can't, which is a shame.

Try the kindle app for PC dave its very different from on screen reading and its free. The actual kindle (Ive never had my hands on one) is said to be even more different and bear little relation to a traditional back lit lcd.
Any electronic gadget has this effect on me Ben. I have no idea why, they just do. Even reading a paper or book when in a car, on a bus, in a plane, on a boat all have the same effect. But with electronic stuff, I do not have to be moving for me to get nauseous.
Now to download an app, don't you need a phone that supports it? Mine dials and sends texts, thats it.
lol I have a "manphone" too. I once overheard my teenage daughter demonstrating it and its lack of features to her friends who I swear gasped in awe that such a device even existed.
I have the app on a netbook.
The old devices are still the best... batteries never run out either :lol2:
Kindle nice gadget, but I'd never buy one.
I'm tactile and I like to hold a book.
Books don't need batteries, so a lack of power won't stop me reading.
Can you read a kindle on a plane, my book I can.
I use the kindle app on an android phone, it's great.
Would i prefer a book, tbh yes but i can have countless books on there and it's in my pocket.
Would i pay more than a quid or so for a book on there, no. Why not, well, why should i pay nywhere near the pb/hb price when all i have is electrons. Plus i can't pass it on, either for money or for free, at least with a proper back it can be enjoyed by many.
So it has pluses and minuses but i certainly enjoy having it on my phone, and i've got tons of free books on there, i might even spend, Oooh, 71p on a couple some time lol
I have the Ipad kindle app and its fantastic. Mind you so is ibooks.
Never thought I would get used to reading off an ereader as we love books so much. Yes youre right the feel of a book is something that will never be replaced but the ipad is so much more convenient when Im travelling for work.
I was given a Kindle for Christmas, I love it! I am a major book worm, simply cannot be trusted within 300 meters of Waterstones (Bank Manager took out ASBO on the subject) and now I have the whole of Amazon (around 520k books in the UK store and 590k in the US one) at my disposal whenever I want.
It is nothing like using a computer screen and the reading experience should not be compared to one, it is much more like a book. Light and easy to use. About the only thing it cannot replicate is the feel of the book when you are approaching the end and the tingly excitement of the climax to come (did I just say that here?:-D )
It won't replace books but for definately has a place and is here to stay.
