I read a lot of books. I once set myself a goal to read a book by every author on the fiction shelves of the local library, such is my joy in reading.
I have never really enjoyed reading books online, getting the font and brightness right and the page layouts well it has never really felt the same. Until I discovered Amazons kindle application for pc. Well the app is free and an awful lot of out of copyright books are free too. And it works and I think its wonderful. This is by the way of a heads up but I also wondered if anybody had views of this or alternatives or experience of the kindle notepad which may make a nice xmas present for a swinging bibliophile.
Yes there is its resale value on ebay lol

I can`t imagine the day that I`ll willingly read a book on a screen rather than printed pages. There`s so much more to a book than simply it`s content.

Agreed.
As to the resale value Ben, I keep books - I don't sell them on when they've been read.
I have thousands of novels - some I have had for over 20 years - they are like old friends. I dont think I could replace them with an electronic book... and also dont like the idea of an electronic book in the bath!! at least with a traditional book you can dry it on a rad if you drop it in when you fall asleep lol

I have an iPod Touch with the iBooks app on it. I also have the Kindle app installed, which is good, but I like the iBooks one more. You can also get all the same out of copyright books free from the Apple Store, along with lots of other free stuff in all genres.
To be honest I hadn't paid for any books until the latest volume of a series I was reading was published. It was only available in the shops as hardback but I got the softcopy version a lot cheaper. It was also so much easier to take abroad on holiday. In fact I took a whole library with me, along with all the other stuff packed into the iTouch - browser, email, iPod, games, etc etc etc.
I'm thinking on getting J a Kindle although she is a die hard hard copy book and library user. She might love or hate it. I'm not sure whether its worth the risk.
Download onto your PC and see what you think. It's not gonna be exactly the same as the actual kit, but it might give you a feel for it.
Hi Ben
I was given the Kindle as a birthday present last month and I absolutely love it. I have downloaded a lot of the free books too but the ones to buy are not too expensive either. Just one tip though if you do buy one, make sure you don't leave the wifi switched on as it does drain the battery quickly if you do. I only switch the wifi on when I want to buy more books. Oh and if you are a fan of erotic fiction like me make sure you don't leave it out on your desk at work on one of those pages redface

Thanks cubes I'm going to do that and try and get J to look at it without letting on that I'm interested in buying one for her.
i had the sony ebook when it first came out.....
there are two reasons that i enjoy it...... i am always on my travels and books when you have one bag dont take proity esp when you go away up to three weeks at time so this for me was very benifical..... the other i have a tinted screen which all i have to do is place over the ereader and i dont have bouncing letters where as with a book i always have to put the tint over each page... and yip im lazy lol.. my read has a ereader and its really good to use....
i love to see all the books i have read all lined up but times are changing and i believe books like viedos will soo be out of fashion :/
I love proper books, the smell the feel, knowing that when I get into a good book I won't put it down until I have read every last page
Now an avid library user/ charity shop buyer since Dek refuses to buy me any more (I usually read 3+ a week) I also like to keep the books I read even though I may never read them again. Sometimes I look at a book on the shelf and remember where I was/when I read it
I wouldn't thank you for an electronic reader, a well used book has excellent charm something I doubt can ever be replaced
Interesting contributions thank you.
Yes Flower as you know I too was once a book dealer and jolly profitable it was too. I do regard the day I realised those shelves and shelves of books could be sold for hard cash as one of great liberation. Subsequently I allow myself 5 shelves of books. Once these become full I sell or otherwise dispose of a shelf full.
Thought about getting 1 but I love the smell of a proper book to much (sounds weird).. I have been limited to the amount of books I buy now cause I am a nightmare round the charity shops and am running out of room and wont get rid of any..
I don't think it's a matter of one or the other. Electronic books are great for travelling especially, and 'real' books are nice to hold - and less expensive to drop in the bath.
When e-readers do non-fiction as well as they do fiction I'll be happy to get one. Most of my books are factual - most of them have beautiful illustrations - I want to see them if I read the book - so at the moment Kindles and such like are no major use for me. I have the Kindle app on my phone for the occasional trip.
The idea is fantastic and I wish I could use one, but looking at a screen constantly gives me the same feeling as travel sickness. So it is real books for me, but the idea of having all your books on one implement is brilliant.
If I could, I would, but I can't, which is a shame.

Try the kindle app for PC dave its very different from on screen reading and its free. The actual kindle (Ive never had my hands on one) is said to be even more different and bear little relation to a traditional back lit lcd.
Any electronic gadget has this effect on me Ben. I have no idea why, they just do. Even reading a paper or book when in a car, on a bus, in a plane, on a boat all have the same effect. But with electronic stuff, I do not have to be moving for me to get nauseous.
Now to download an app, don't you need a phone that supports it? Mine dials and sends texts, thats it.
lol I have a "manphone" too. I once overheard my teenage daughter demonstrating it and its lack of features to her friends who I swear gasped in awe that such a device even existed.

lol
Glad there is more than just me who still has the old gadgets
Dave_Notts
The old devices are still the best... batteries never run out either :lol2:
Kindle nice gadget, but I'd never buy one.
I'm tactile and I like to hold a book.
Books don't need batteries, so a lack of power won't stop me reading.
Can you read a kindle on a plane, my book I can.
I love books.
The way they look on a shelf, feel in my hands and yes, the way they smell. I like turning the pages. I enjoy the act of reading.
But all of the classics in one place and chuckable in my bag?
Hmmmmm... I always swore I would never get one but could possibly be persuaded.
lol
gary has put the kindle app on my laptop but so far havnt got anything to read from it ... hopefully sorting that out tonite smile
im interested in them simply cus its another way to access books cus i love reading but have so many on shelves and i hate dusting them lol

Yes you can.
They don't ask you to switch stuff off just because it's electronic (and that's just nonsense anyway, like mobile phones at petrol stations). They also ask you to pay attention during takeoff and landing so that if anything does happen you're more aware.
Plus iirc the kindle doesn't actually use any power when simply displaying a page, it is effectively off, drawing no power, the wonder of e-ink or similar.
I use the kindle app on an android phone, it's great.
Would i prefer a book, tbh yes but i can have countless books on there and it's in my pocket.
Would i pay more than a quid or so for a book on there, no. Why not, well, why should i pay nywhere near the pb/hb price when all i have is electrons. Plus i can't pass it on, either for money or for free, at least with a proper back it can be enjoyed by many.
So it has pluses and minuses but i certainly enjoy having it on my phone, and i've got tons of free books on there, i might even spend, Oooh, 71p on a couple some time lol
I have the Ipad kindle app and its fantastic. Mind you so is ibooks.
Never thought I would get used to reading off an ereader as we love books so much. Yes youre right the feel of a book is something that will never be replaced but the ipad is so much more convenient when Im travelling for work.

It might be the screen refresh rate that's causing the problem. On PCs you can sometime change that in the advanced display settings.
i was given the kindle for my bday pressie and its absolutely fantastic, i love it smile
its easy to use and the screen is perfect for reading, no glare at all, in fact it feels the same as reading a paper book :)
and its far lighter than a paper book and of course i can store thousands of books on it so il never run out of books to read and storing them is easier than bookcases ... i love it :)
I was given a Kindle for Christmas, I love it! I am a major book worm, simply cannot be trusted within 300 meters of Waterstones (Bank Manager took out ASBO on the subject) and now I have the whole of Amazon (around 520k books in the UK store and 590k in the US one) at my disposal whenever I want.
It is nothing like using a computer screen and the reading experience should not be compared to one, it is much more like a book. Light and easy to use. About the only thing it cannot replicate is the feel of the book when you are approaching the end and the tingly excitement of the climax to come (did I just say that here?:-D )
It won't replace books but for definately has a place and is here to stay.

thats what i wanted to say but im rubish at putting my thoughts down in writing lol
when i read on my kindle its the same as a book, its nothing like a computer screen smile
one thing different for me thou is that it has replaced paper books for me now ... i will never have to dust more book cases than i already have lol
my only worry was that i have varifocals glasses so sometimes struggle to read smaller writing but its not a problem with the kindle at all
i love it :)
