I just tried to do that, but I have already resized the pics (using JQL's thingy) for use as an avatar and the system won't let me load them into *my pics* because they are too small 
Any other ideas of anything I can try?

I don't suppose you've still got the original, full-sized pic to upload into My Photo's?
Put the picture you want to use as your avatar in my photos.
The picture you place in My Photos does not need to be resized. Just make sure it is square
choose the option "profile" for the picture you want to use.
In M account > forum settings . the pictures you have selected as profile will appear. Click on the one you want and it will resize itself to fit your avatar. There appears to be no need to resize the pic to the avatar size.

I don't suppose you've still got the original, full-sized pic to upload into My Photo's?
The photo upload is set to not take pics smaller than 150px from memory, which sort of conflicts with tha avatar guide :doh:
Load up a pic that is bigger into your profile and you should be able to use that when you go into your forum settings.

oops didnt know that
use somethng like Photoshop then
create a new image at the size the site requires
cut and paste your old or existing image into the new empty box
when it says shrink to size say yes
then save image again and you should have something the right size for the site
