I'm pondering taking up an evening class in September, in an attempt to have at least one non-work night during the week.
Has anyone done any good courses of late? Recommend anything?
I'm not looking for an overly academic class, more practical or creative so that I can relax and focus on something not workish.
All ideas much appreciated!

what about floristry?
our local college does things like cake decorating (I did that and loved it), balloon decorations (the type of displays for weddings and parties)
it also does night courses in things like reiki, hot stone therapy, hopi ear candles, reflexology and aromatherapy massage
i have done evening classes at college to learn something different and to further my education
some clases that i went too twice a week at night but on the last year the coarse got changed to day times instaed of nights due to that not many people enroled on the coarse
any extra education most consider that this may happen
i took electronics tv/video repair at the moment i am considering hairdressing to do but not as a full time job thoe
I did a class in silver jewellery last year... am waiting for the enrollment for September so that I can go do another. It's ace! Hugely therapeutic (although an expensive hobby) and I loved every second of it.
Well worth doing if you like jewellery.
EDIT: I also did a pottery class years ago... that was ace too!
Learn a language, then go on holiday and put it into practice....

How about something like massage or aromatherapy? Mrs C did an Indian head massage course, but that was a daytime one so might not be available to you.
ive done massage, aromatherapy, sign language, and now doing cake decorating
i love the cake decorating forget everything when i am concentrating on a cake

I second this. It was great fun.
Did massage too. That was and still is rather pleasant.
I took a massage and aeromatherepy course........
Comes in handy... and it is actually really interesting...
like earthy... oooh.. i do fancy learning sign language, and as for learning a foreign language, I can point in you the direction of a few podcasts that are fantastic for that

floristry is rather academic actually as all latin names n common names, soil type, flowerin times, climate etc etc have to be learned its actually quite specialised n not perhaps like flower arranging as i think you might have meant.
On the other hand floristry is a very interesting subject to study i should know have spent 10 yrs at it
My mum was in the oral farters club... that's floral art for anyone who's not my dad or me! lol My mum is right good at that stuff! But the committee was quite literally full of oral farters so she left.
Now she does stained glass and she's brilliant at it! They have classes on that too nola... it's a bit fiddley and not really my kinda thing although she has made me some really lovely lamps for my flat and done the panel above my front door. Very cool! I dare say that's where I get my creative streak from.
what about a wine appreciation course ... get drunk by not spitting out (ewww how common) and also wine educated along the way. a fun way to learn. and i even represented wales at a competition while at college (came last we was giggling so much)
A second language or signing course would be my options, although the language option may be too much down the academic route that you said you wanted to aviod.. the balloon thing that mrs bonedigger suggested sounds cool too... and the wine thing. There's so many :P
Life drawing? I enjoyed life drawing at school (all models were clothed btw) and I'm hoping to start again when I can locate an evening class. Maybe now I'm old enough to sketch the naked human form wink
May I suggest a stained glass class. A bit like DGs silver work its fascinating fun and highly absorbing. It only gets expensive when you get addicted and start doing whole window panes.
In edit-shout if you need a model fluff. wink
I've done Stained glass, Archaeology a level (the field trips were great), yoga and a few others.
I'm looking at doing a plumbing course. £75 covers replacing taps, fixing leaks and other fairly basic stuff. Really worth while when you remember that call-out of a professional plumber alone may be £50 a time.
I did Mediterranean cooking last year...12 in the class, 50:50 male:female..mostly singles... good social night too..£54 for 12 weeks
RWL
and yes i can now cook nice food!!!! you should try it lol..
lol my morrocan meat balls are to die for hahahaha

Sorry hun, I don't believe they do Vodka tasting classes. innocent
I do two dance classes a week. Latin/ballroom and salsa. Great fun, great workout and sexy, well in my opinion anyway.lol
Why not learn Akkadian. Then you could translate the whole works of Shakespeare for the ancient middle east. Then, in the likely event of no one reading it, you could treat the whole endeavour as an exercise in Zen.

You are brave. I really want to do a dance class but keep bottling it as I would be on my own. redface

I went to salsa - didn't know anyone there. But it was great fun - and believe me, I am NO dancer. Sadly I had to stop cos travelling for work stopped me attending enough to feel confident. But I would really recommend it - no-one there was an expert and everyone was very friendly.
