Try uplinking the rubinels and scuzzies should then reconambulate .

Me thinks someone's cute little bottom is in need of some colour
Big G blushes at JQL's description of his bottom , been a long time since I had a cute little anything .

Ping won't work cos that server drops them.
Can't understand how it can be DNS as he can't even get to it using the direct IP (port 80 though, I don't drop that! biggrin). What would account for it is if the IP is blocked   mad
I too think it's about time he tried a little 'lo-call rate' dialup account, and I suggested this to him (via Missy) about 2 or 3 days ago.
Stumped, utterly stumped confused
I mean, it's not as if this problem is affecting many people, because the bandwidth we are burning is still as huge as ever, and ever increasing

dialup or direct connect to ntlbox is definitely the way to go. I seriously doubt it's ntl or the PC. Is this his home page? if he recently reactivated the ntl then it would have cached the STB IP under the name, and the server might reject IP requests, or your php might require FQDNs (although you'd know that wink )
also, he COULD theoretically access through , see if that works :D
Spoken to TE. He's resetting the NTL router leaving it switched off for 15 mins or so. When he's done that he's going to download PingPlotter.
So if we see him back on the site we know it worked. If not then... bollocks!
He's also warming up a dialup modem just in case...

your warming to my solution then John lol

you mean the NTL or the linksys?is he taking the linksys out and connecting straight to the ntl?

The SH server may drop pings, but the route pings would still be visible when using a trace programme like Pingplotter and would show where the route fails.

Do you mean stable IP by STB IP? Also, which server might be rejecting IP requests?
But, no, my PHP configuration doesn't require FQDNs (and I just tested it to make sure by removing entries from my and using an http IP only request)... unless I, again, am not following what you're saying?
I still think his best bet is to get a modem plugged in and try a different ISP. At least that way we'll know which direction to look in - either up or downwind of his modem.
Set Top Box (the modem)
but you answered the question if you can connect by typing in the IP address biggrin
Forgot to mention...
He says thanks to everyone for their help and Davej's and MikeNorth's felicitations.
He has also reformated his system and installed a completely clean version of Windows XP...
OK some of this is a little beyond my own limited knowledge, but I'm kinda following it.
First thing I'd try is a porn site (anyone know a URL? lol ). If he gets a 404 then it could be a "net nanny" type program blocking anything with an adult nature. (sure that he's done that already though...purely to check his PC rolleyes  )
What kind of router is it? We've got a crappy hardwire route/modem at work that regurlaly blocks sites for no reason whatsoever. Although an unplug/reconnect usually solves that problem. (Again I think I'm probably stating the obvious here but hey)
Has he tried a dialup direct from the PC?
It'd be strange for the ISP to block the site for just one area. Is there anyone else from the site that is on the same ISP in his area?
I honestly can't see the isp blocking part of the site (and not the photo section) in just one area. confused but stranger stuff has happened.
If there's no further progress gimme a PM and I'll have a word with a mate of mine who troubleshoots for a large ISP. wink He might have some more ideas to "throw into the ring".
Oh and next time you speak to TE say hello from us 2 and remind him our email still works
Just tell him to give everyone a ring

If it still does it, there's the proof it is the ISP and ISP routing.

not really, he still has 2 boxes in between him and the ISP biggrin

We're trying everything, but not all at the same time wink
Once he's completely reset the NTL Router we'll look at a direct connection to the NTL router if he can't see the forum via the Linksys.
What get's me is he can see every single URL he chooses except the SH Forum dunno

Woah!
So, he can see (for example):-
http://www.swingingheaven.co.uk/advice/online-security.html
confused: :?: :?:
that would make matters worse for working this out for sure! lol

I would take out the linksys first if I were you, it'll save time in the long run...
Mark,
Sorry I meant any URL that doesn't contain www.swingingheaven.co.uk. I don't know about that, but I'll ask him to give it a try when his router is back up

Depending on the cabling behind his computers/routers
Don't know if this is going to help........
I had a similar issue with NTL about 6 months ago. After many hours of back and forth with their technical support (or hinderence biggrin ) people they decided one of their proxys servers had a fault and provided me with the IP address of a different one to connect through. Which solved the problem.
Certainly is a possibility... I'll mention it to him

That's what I reckon.. as said before and a neighbour sees with regularity.
PingPlotter reports 17 hops before failure. TE's emailing the report to me now.

try opening a command window and typing "telnet 80" without the quotes, and replacing with the ip address, see what the server says. I assume if it's getting that far then it's the icmp block that finally fails.

Hi Jags,
Nice of you to help out :P lol

All I can offer is to keep the spirits up - no bloody use with technical stuff - just broke my fax printer cos I turned it upside down and shifted something - eventually turned it upside down the other way and it shifted back!
See...easy - turn his PC upside down and shake it.
SORRY!
