Excess Baggage!!!!!

I wonder if anybody else has had this done to them. Went to Zante with the g/f flying First Choice out of Manchester. Allowance 20kg each. My case 21kg, hers 24kg , charged £16 excess baggage, no option but to pay. (Need to buy better bathroom scales)
Point of topic. I weigh in @ 13st and the g/f @ 9st, giving total of 22st. The amount of our fellow passengers, who singularly, were this weight ,without their baggage, was amazing. Realisticly, should they be charged e/b or their baggage allowance reduced
Not looking to offend, but would like fairness.

thats just a ridiculous thing to suggest!!
Hehehehehehehehehehe
I can imagine it now - "diet if you want cheaper flights"
Lovin' it lol
Some airlines were looking at such a method, but I don't think anything was every done about it!!.
(talking here to the lady that got charged £300 excess baggage at Bankok airport, redface and that was after I had chatted up the desk supervisor in what little thai I do speak, flashed my eye lids at him and ask if he had a happy new year, he brough the cahrge down from £450!) and no there was not an option of leaving anything at the surprisedops: airport and making the case lighter.
Thats most of America fucked then.
right thats it im off to make my own plane out of used washing up bottles, i think chewing gum should hold it together and elastic bands for extra support, all i need now are two boieng 747 engines and im away lol
Jon,
Certainly we agree that the fairest way would be to weigh the pasengers AND their luggage together. If you go beyond a weight limit you pay more, if you were under the limit you get a refund!
Perhaps that would help solve this countries obesity problem? (oh and make Mcdonalds fit NARROW doors, if you can't get in you can't each the food!!)
John & Shel
my hubbies auntie was actually told she would have to pay more for her flight cause she exceded the weight allowence and if she went on the plane one less person could so she had 2 pay for 2 seats
Thats a gods honest true story

so my point is there is a weight allowance on passengers and if u go over it u will pay more
I think you may be on to something!
£1 per lb over say 14st for aeroplanes/ car tax/ tramploline hire/ fair rides etc
This would result in less fuel consumption, wear and tear to the roads and equipment and encourage people to diet.
lol
Coming back from Spain this year with Easy jet I was a couple of pounds over the 20kg limit. They asked if there was anything that I could take out of my check-in bag and carry it on the plane with me so I had to open the case and start cramming things into my carry-on flight bag. Whats that about dunno

Yeah last trip to Spain was 20kg for luggage and 10kg for hand luggage! Half as much again - seems odd to me! Did a bit of shifty-in round meself for that one.
Only takin a rucksack next time tho wink

Gawd this topic is sooo misleading rolleyes
Oh no, im thinking of excess packages redface surprisedops:
Carry on
Well if they charge for weight maybe they can give me enough space to fit in the blasted seat: 21 Stone, 6ft 5in, large build...
why is it, that if your over weight people think you must eat takeaways all the time.
well i for one dont, i have a takeaway once a fortnight.
and if they did make mcdonalds doors narrower, id just send one of the kids in for me biggrin
and some people who are over waight, it isent cos they eat to much its cos they have a medical problem.
i dont have that problem, im just over weight and happy the way i am. :D
but why should we be punished for our size?

If you're happy, why so paranoid about what people have said? Nobody's saying that you should be punished, just that you should pay a price which is proportionate to your weight.

im not paranoid and im not getting into a argument with you.
just thought people were allowed to express there oppinions on here.
without getting called things like paranoid ect.
thought we had seen to much of that on here lately.
so ill shut up ok sad
ill go look at other thread bye :D
I started out reading this light heartedly and now I'm not so sure.
You're given a weight limit for luggage and despite having two kids and being "fatties" our luggae was still well under when we flew last year!!
Why punish others for an ability to pack sensibly????

because the plane can only carry so much weight so to make it fair theres a upper limit on peoples weight and baggage weight but its not as suggested by the thread starter mixed together, as i said b4 my husbands auntie was asked to pay for two seats as she was over the weight limit, if she went on the plane that ment 1 less person could fly so she had 2 pay for that space and its the same with baggage, seems fair enough to me, its not about punishing people its about plane flights being a buisness and they are there to make money

but one child on the plane would counteract her weight, wheres fair?? Sounds like an excuse to me... Some are overaverage (like me, I am not fat just big), others under average. An airplane is filled with them all so it should even out...
i went to dominican republic last year and they said they would be more strict on the way back about charging, dont think anyone got charged though, people in front of me were 27kg on the way and must have been on the way back too but they didnt get charged!
i think the weight on people tho is a bit silly rolleyes
I'm amazed at the response from you all. Its my 1st Topic posting and it wasn't meant to get personal.

The excess baggage charge is NOT because of the weight limit a plane can carry, after all if a plane is overweight it doent matter if the airline charges £1million the plane still wont fly!
The charge is because the 'excess baggage'/weight means that the plane flight is less ecconomical, more fuel is used so they pass that cost on.
As a 'larger' guy i find the insinuation that bigger people should have to pay more to be offensive, as Calista said earlier we went to the US last year and had no probs with baggage, and as T&H said the spread of passengers will even things out.

OK byeeeeeeeeee.
Your post came across as defensive, I thought (yes, my opinion). We have seen lots of things lately, so I don't know what 'that' is, which you have seen too much of.
The comments other people have made are also their opinions and just as valid.
I disagree with being charged extra too but if the airlines decide to go that way, we either accept it or don't fly. We don't have a lot of choice do we?
Calista, we also went to the US a couple of years ago and had no problems (we are also 'fatties' and had children). On the way back, however, we had to shuffle our belongings so that our hold luggage was heavier and our hand luggage lighter. Bit daft really, but we did it because we didn't have a choice if we wanted to get home lol
I'm inclined to agree with TnH with regard to the 'thinnies' balancing out the 'fatties'.
Why do you find it offensive that someone, who weighs possibly 50% more than someone else, and that is not directed at you, should have to pay more to the airline. You rightly say that its for fuel, but there had to be a suggested body weight to start with so if any body can come up with this figure, it would certainly enlighten the topic Or are we getting too serious biggrin

my answer would be hell no!!!!! and i'll explain why....
okay... if you want "fairness" can i then ask you a question??
did you know what the the baggage limit was..........
If you did and you decided to ignore it then you have not one to blame but yourselves, i am sure other people knew the rules and they decided to keep to the limit, so why couldn't you???
If you didn't know... then why didn't you find out beforehand??? why should ignorance be used as an excuse.. whoever i fly with i always find out what the baggage limit and other things (check in times ect.....)
like you said in jest "need to buy better scales"

.

Just picked this out Morbius because for one it's right and for two, it kinda highlights the issue because as it stands the cost is currently taken by everyone. I'm not getting into the debate as such, I'm just throwing a bit of 'devils advocate' stuff in. I doubt that anyone would be so bold as to charge by total passenger weight because thats sort of saying that we are freight which I suppose we are, but folk wouldn't be best pleased with that would they.
.......fuck it...... If I was an underweight Chinaman, with just a carry on lunch and a pocket full of lose change I'd be miffed, but I ain't....charge us fat lumps the standard rate and give the little un's a rebate. T&H you will just have to go Fed Ex. with the Bananas and mail.
Awwwwwww Dave be nice to TnH, he's all alone tonight. You could seriously hurt him, bloody picking on him.
