I figure there must be some here... although probably doing the decent thing on a Sunday morning and are still in bed! lol
Anyway... some advice would be appreciated if anyone has a clue!
I had a session at the gym yesterday... it was a fairly tough session and today my arms ache. I'm having trouble with small things... you know, like eating, nose blowing, doing something with my hair and I'm not very sure that I can actually get dressed.
I was going to go for a swim but I'm not sure I can actually get there never mind get in the pool. confused
So... does anyone have any quick fixes for muscle ache? Any tips as to how I can ease the pain and actually be able to move properly? Cause I'd quite like to do something with my day.

I woke up at 4am... I got up cause I wasn't comfy and then went back to bed. Got up at half six and felt worse for it. I've just been to Sainsburys... actually putting clothes on took about 20 minutes and my hair looks like birds should be nesting in it. I got some Ibuprofen gel and I've smothered my arms in that... fingers crossed it works soon cause I'm kinda hungry and short of eating something off the bunker in the kitchen I'm not quite sure how I'm gonna do it.
I suspect my planned day out is up the creek. sad
Magnesium oil works better than most of the well known brands.
Most of us have too high a calcium - magnesium ratio due to the modern diet so the majority of us are deficient.
Some sports enthusiasts in the know, use magnesium oil (transdermal magnesium therapy) to aid in muscle recovery after exercise, also to alleviate and prevent muscle spasms and cramps. It also works well for those who suffer from restless legs syndrome.
Another trick that atheletes use is to sit in bath full of ice but canna imagine you doing that wink
Ps - magnesium is used in A&E to treat & save the lives of those in the throes of cardiac arrest - the heart is a muscle!

I do a lot of bike riding and find that after a good hard ride (fnar fnar), if I drink a milkshake it cuts down the muscle aches the next day. Something to do with the protein in the milk I think. Try it next time, it might help.
Gary
PS There's others ways to take protein too if you want me to show you ;)
Woohoo
Where on a Sunday morning, knowing DG's location, do you get Magnesium oil from?
xx
Holland and Barrett do it for as do most health shops.

Ice pack?

Ice pack would be only good for localised injuries and tend not to help ease muscle pain.
Prevention is advisable next time a hard workout is planned.
Eat plenty of Protein, Carbohydrates and believe it or not Fat and try not and "rip" the muscles.

Ah protein, what would we do without it? We wouldn’t grow that’s for sure! Apart from water, protein is the most plentiful substance in the body. Protein is responsible for building, repairing and maintaining muscle tissue. Protein is also the body’s second resource for energy after carbohydrates. Put simply, without protein we would wither away to skin and bone. When it comes to muscle building, your body requires an increased about of protein to repair the muscle you break down at the gym.

Carbohydrates are your body’s primary source of energy. There are two types of carbohydrates, simple and complex. Simple carbs are found in foods like sugar and fruit and will give you a quick burst of energy by raising blood sugar levels. Complex carbs are found in whole grains like brown bread, rice and potatoes. Complex carbs are important because they provide the long lasting fuel you need to train hard. If you don’t eat enough complex carbs in your muscle building diet your body will turn to its next source of energy, protein (which you don’t want!).

Fats are also a vital part of your diet, but must be consumed in the correct amounts. The most important fact you need to know about fats is there are two types. First, there are “good fats”. These fats are found in foods like olive oil, fish and nuts. Second, there are “bad fats”. These fats are saturated fats and trans fats. These fats are mainly from foods like meat, eggs and vegetable oil. You should aim to cut down bad fats in your diet and focus on eating the right amount of good fats.
Thanks for that... I'll maybe work up to going out again.
I had a smoothie before my session at the gym and another afterwards both with whey protein powder. I generally suffer every week... I'm finding muscles that I didn't know I had but it's never been this bad before. It's right behind my elbows on the upper half of my arms (I ache all over but not really sore) and I can't get my hands to up to my face.
If anyone would like to come blow my nose for me and feed me breakfast that'd be much appreciated! :giggle:
Arnica gel is a good one for muscle ache, you don`t need to rub it in just put it on and leave it to soak into your skin, you can get it off a well known shopping channel they also do arnica bath soak which is a godsend
Don't stay in bed.
Make sure you have plenty to drink. Stretch all the muscles that ache (and all the others if you want). Don't overdo the stretching or it will hurt, but have a go. Keep moving, don't hunker down on the sofa. If you stay rigid your muscles will 'set' in whatever position you are in and take longer to recover. But don't do anything a) too hard or b) too repetitive.
Make sure your muscles stay warm - put an extra layer on if necessary.
The swimming idea is good - just don't use it as a time for more exercise - just move around in the water gently. But beware - if (like our local pool) the water is cold (they claim it's so serious exercisers don't overheat - chuh) you won't feel much better and may feel worse.
I take paracetamol for that kind of pain but sounds like there are other preventatives out there.
A soak in a warm bath does the muscles the power of good. As is getting someone to gently smooth oils over you afterwards.
I always thought arnica was meant for bruises? dunno
I have some though at the moment the gel stuff has helped... I'm trying to keep moving so have been pottering in the kitchen... arms length stuff is fine... it's when I try to bend my arms that it hurts.
I'm going to go run a bath now and soak for a while.
Will leave the swimming till tomorrow night. smile
Thanks for all your tips.

Oooooooooooh that'd be lovely, thank you!

No witch hazel is meant for bruises
Arnica gel is like natures deep heat and sort of gives you a warm feeling and eases the muscles, good for arthritic joints too (not that you have any)

I wouldn't be too sure about that... I feel about 90. I went for a sleep at 3pm and I've just got up again and I ache all over!
Ensuring you warm down after excercise is every bit as important and warming up properly as well...

I joined a gym in April. The only time I've stepped foot in there was when I was given a tour around the facilities before I signed up.
I'm fine lol
I'm sure there is a message in that wink

Gyms rely on the majority of members paying up and NOT using the facilities. I have no interest in exercise for its own sake, but I get loads of it doing the garden and allotment. And it's only £12 a year plus seeds. biggrin

I hired a personal trainer rather than joining a gym... I'm trying to lose some lard. It's working (23.5 lbs gone so far) smile but today has been rubbish. sad
I've emailed him to see what I've done wrong or what I can do to fix myself cause I'm not sure what to do with myself now. I'm just uncomfortable.
I'd just echo what a few have already said. Do a good warm up and stretch thoroughly after your workout. Also, if you're new to it a certain amount of stiffness (no laughing at the back please) is inevitable, power through it!

Yeah... I'm fairly determined, I'm only sorry I've managed to waste a day and I missed my swim this morning. I suspect tomorrow is going to be worse. I've no idea how I'm gonna wash my hair! lol

It's very odd how addictive it is when you get started. I went through my wardrobe last night and put a whole pile of stuff that doesn't fit any more in a charity bag! That's pretty satisfying! wink
Sounds like you've found some muscles you don't normally use! I had the same the first time I did body pump! Just keep doing gentle stretches and keep the muscles warm. Even if they still hurt tomorrow try and do some exercise, you may not feel like it but it will feel better afterwards.
Well done on your hard work! smile
when i was riding i used to train for about 4-5 hours a day.
mostly running, mountain bike riding, swimming, light weights workout and a good diet.
sometimes id be knackered and didnt want to go but when you have to, having a goal or mission helps to push you harder and get you off the bed.
I used to train in the weights gym around between 1 and 4 am as this was the quietest and best to concentrate on what you need to do.
My ipod was valuable as i had files made which got the temper up and had the red mist coming down then i found time went by quickly.
If my arms or legs ached i used to warm up by covering them in deep heat max strength before and after the workouts.
As i have had serious injuries in the past some things like the rowing machine hurt more than others so i knew i had to prepare for the worst and the deep heat just about worked.
when i was working out i would be riding the bike in my mind attacking the track and get myself into the right position on the bike and learning were i could possibly go quicker and often i would stop in the middle of a routine when i discovered where i could pick up time or enter/exit a corner into the next complex quicker.
even when in the shower people would laugh as they could hear me humming the engine note as i was still going around the track in my mind.
Its all about focus. You have to be driven and want it.
With me id say it became an obsession and looking back was to much but other riders worked out harder and often burnt out quicker.
You may not like your hips or shape of your legs but whatever it is only do it because you really want it or your going to let yourself down and its always harder the second time to pick yourself up and go for it.
but i can tell you after years of hard training, bike crashes and dieting i am now left with a neck muscle problem, various shoulder and knee issues plus hands that suddenly lock the fingers tight and go numb.
some days are better than others but i always have a part of me complaining until i get it all fixed.
Well this morning I was awake at 2am in pain and again at half three. Got up and put more gel stuff on and went back to bed. Got up to come to work and had a shower. All these limbs that you take for granted... my left arm is working much better than my right so I managed to wash my hair with one hand this morning. lol
Anyway... I've made it to work - on the bus - pissed off I missed my walk but I think it was a wise choice given that after sitting in one place for an hour got up and feel like I'm about 90 and require a wheelchair. rolleyes
