we do have steak and kidney PUDDINGS, and i love them.

Ok - let's get a little perspective here. MOST people, North and South (and let's not forget Wales, Scotland, E Anglia and all parts in between) are friendly and polite. Well, they ae in my experience anyway.
I tease the Northerners as much as anyone (if not more) over weather, accents, lack of civilisation (are groats still legal tender up there?) and almost everything else. The important thing to remember is that it is very tongue in cheek and not in the least malicious. There have been a few comments on here about Southerners being rude, letting doors slam in your face etc.. It's simply not true, though it will be interesting to hear what Alex has to say now that she has actually experienced it in person.
I think that big cities are more impersonal and everyone tends to keep themselves to themselves which gives the perception of unfriendliness. This can be true in Birmingham (got mugged there), Manchester (attempted mugging) as well as London (never had a problem).
Perhaps more of you should visit us down south and find out how friendly we really are! Or are some of the Northern Guerillas (phire, BaggyBoy) frightened that if people find out how good it is down south they may never want to go back to the frozen wastelands of the north! lol

I came south just for a few months.....in 1995....I can't find the exit....I think I'm being held hostage and no-one cares to pay the ransom (two conkers and a tube of smarties).
I do miss horizontal rain and short vowels.

Okay - my impressions........
I was down there for almost 4 days and, without exception, I only encountered polite, couteous and friendly people. Anyone who knows me, knows I smile a lot - the perception is that people in london rarely smile - well that wasn't my experience - any smile I gave was immediately returned. People did hold doors open for me and also said thank you if I did the same for them.
Cab drivers were excellent - especially the one who got me from Ealing to Hammersmith.
So all in all - a big thumbs up to the South from me!
My opinion really is that often the treatment you get can often (not always I know) be directly related to your own behaviour!
Now I started this thread as a bit of fun, hijack it by all means - but if it starts getting serious north/south sniping posts - I will ask for it to be locked.

I need some advice folks......
Alex, As a Pie eater yiou may have to take a supply with you as they cannot make them like we do up north.....in fact you will have to be on the look out for the notoriuos cockney pie rustlers if they get wind of your wares... just fluff up your avartaric feathers and stun them - but be careful - they are not used to all the gorgeous women we have in the North....don't stay there too long - give the local woman some chance.....Ben

I'm a Southerner (and I'm nice :smile2: mostly) but I have a thing for northern accents so love to travel north anytime I get biggrin

You get good and bad everywhere, the thing is to try and avoid crappy people wherever they are.

LOL .... My father in law was a London bus driver and concerned about his health and pollution made the choice to move to the midlands. Got some good clean country air in his lungs and was diagnosed with asthma!!!!
