Just saw your post and looked up the news online...
I hope everyone is ok too.
Have been watching it on the news for nearly an hour now. Looks bad!
Good to hear that one of the oil companies based there has accounted for all it's workers that were on site at the time. Just hope that all the other companies can do the same.
Good luck and stay safe to all the memebers of all the emergency services that are there. You have my full respect and admiration for the job you do - especially when something like this happens.
just heard on the wireless.....
taht 2 tanks have exploded.....another 18 that could go up
OMG

I just looked on the BBC web site sad

Massive explosions hit fuel depot
Eyewitness accounts
Three large explosions have rocked a fuel depot near Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire shooting flames hundreds of feet into the sky.
Police say there are casualties and emergency services are at the scene.
The first blast happened at 0603 GMT at the Buncefield fuel depot, close to junction 8 of the M1 motorway, 10 miles from Luton airport.
It is being treated as an accident and rumours that a plane was involved are unfounded, said a police spokesman.
Witnesses said another two explosions followed the first at 0626 GMT and 0627 GMT.
Eyewitness Sam Matton, who lives half a mile from the depot, told BBC News: "The sky is sort of orange. The flames have got to be 60ft up in the air.
Watching now on sky news they reckon the flames are 200ft in the air
They say no casualties but 2 are still un accounted for..
well they reckon the sound on it was heard as far as surrey..........
spoke to a friend and she said she heard a bang... and she lives in watford....
I am on standby talking to virgin, and we are now taking their passengers....but it looks awful
Just watching itv news 36 causulties wth 4 serious
Thoughts with all those concerned
just seen it on the news sad :( :(
o my god hope everyone is ok 4 seriously injured and 36 minor injured
my thoughts are with you all.
and now long queues at petrol stations in London & South East
what is this country coming to? rolleyes umpteen damaged houses, injured people and firefighters risking lives to be in the immediate area - and all everyone else can think about is petrol availability and this god damn every man for himself mentality. banghead
sorry rant over.
Thoughts for those injured & immediately affected.
Same here where I live 1 petrol station already run out of unleaded & the other 3 have forecourts full of panic buyers mad & you can bet your bottom dollar there people who only use the car for local journeys
But thank god its only injuries & not deaths.

It's only one of many storage depots around the UK and will make hardly any difference to fuel supplies.
Thankfully, these places tend to be relatively unmanned.

Agreed.
But, it will make a difference to supplies now that people are 'panic buying' - and i wonder if it is truly panic buying or more of a selfish 'well, I 'm putting a full tank in cos i'm not going without' mentality, rather than a 'well I'll put enough in to top up and get me to work & back cos that's all I need'.
rolleyes
First I know of it was on here and I immediately phoned my parents (Near Aylesbury). They said it woke them up. Terrible thing to have happened. I am just glad there doesn't seem to have been any deaths.
By the way I have had to to rejoin  as I messed up my email and can't get a validation resent. (formerly triptix)
ah, well Welcome back Triptix! biggrin
I've seen the reports from people who's houses have been damaged - buckled doors, broken windows, cracked walls etc. Good grief, and just before Xmas too ....
its incredible that more people havent been hurt, can only send wishes and thoughts to those who have been injured.

Yep, It'll be the "panic buyers" that will cause the problem. I drive for a living a need fuel to work.
The smoke is blowing across Lorth East london at present,
We have blue sky over Enfield, with the black smoke in it, this is going to blow over a big part of the south east.
We have a few members from that area of hertfordshire on here, i noticed none have posted yet. They would have heard the bang im sure
It woke me up just after 6
Him'nHer just checking in folks......... tin 'ats on and buckets of sand at the ready ...... cough cough splutter splutter ...........
As the crow flies we're 10 miles from Buncefield Depot and yes it woke us up, but we have blue skies now (was a bit smokey earlier) but there is just enough breeze to keep it south and east of us.
Its thankful that if this had to happen it was today and not tomorrow.......... Buncefield has always had other industry near it, but in the last 15 to 20 years or so the building of offices and industrial units has both got closer and been more intense, as has local housing. Had this have happened on a weekday, many more people could have been injured. The bummer for us will be tomorrow cos we both need to get into Hemel or to places that mean we need to go through it, Still never mind our customers will have to wait.
Can't understand the lemmings that immediately rush out to buy fuel, there is absolutely no point. Domestic and vehicle fuel supplies can be sourced from other depots. Even Heathrow will probably be ok (aviation fuel is piped directly to heathrow from Buncefield) but there are other sources for this as well........... so don't panic everybody!! rolleyes smile
I'm not watching it on TV, I can see the smoke quite clearly from here as the fire is only two or three miles away! The explosion woke me up but I had no idea what it was, I'd not gone to bed until 3am as I was at a party last night so I was too tired to get up and investigate.
No house damage thankfully although a couple of friends haven't been so lucky - there's a very evil looking grey smog settled around us and the smoke cloud is still really black and spreading. I can usually see for miles around from my house but visibility is probably limited to a mile or so!
The idiot brigade are currently queuing at a petrol station where a punch up has already occurred - why they've chosen to sit at a place less than half a mile from the fire to buy petrol they probably don't need is beyone me rolleyes

There is a big Black Cloud sitting over north london at present and its blocking out the sub, but the sky seems to be blue behind it so where the rest of the smoke is going i have no idea but its not coming this way anymore
just look out tghe back window loks like its going more east towards essex
OMG how loud was the bang, scared the living daylights out of me at 6 this morning,
Used to live 2 miles from there so glad I moved!!!
Seriously...hope the injured people get well soon

I knew I shouldn't have gone for the vindaloo last night.......sorry folks.

Well if yer need a new bog I know a good man who can sort it for yer............ wink
Still covered in smoke here, and the original blast did cause some damage to my place, nothing too serious thankfully.
I echo the sentiments of others here that no one has lost their lives, and hope that those near the blast than I am are able to get back to their properties very soon.

Woke my dad when his caravan did a sidestep... and that is way out here in Surrey... Amazing no one was dead when we saw it on the news, thankful for small mercies...
just glad you folks just up teh road from me are ok my brother used to run a pub in bennetts end so hemel is like a second home.
They have opened the M1 again tonight so looks like the british end is being
kept up once again.
I cant belive so many people on the tele today just saying well things like this happen
we are one hell of a country
All I can say, it while it is a big tragedy for the local community, if it had of happened on a working week day at say 10am it would have been a whole lot worse……………
I know that area fairly well, in fact had a ‘coffee meet’ in a transport café once near that Ind Estate, the place is really busy with lorries, delivery vans, workers etc etc.
I hope the area can be re built eventually and homes can sorted out for the families by Christmas or at least semi sorted for them.
