Fireworks should NOT be banned. The UK is turning into a real big brother is watching you/nanny state.
It is clearly wrong for kids to misuse fireworks, throw them at people, put them through other people's doors etc. but there are laws in place to protect people from this sort of thing and they should be enforced. Fireworks should be used responsibly and it is up to adults to ensure that kids do not act irresponsibly.
Maybe if the police spent more time chasing the bad guys instead of (for example) starting a campaign to stop pensioners driving cars as was reported on the BBC today things would be a bit better.
While I accept that fireworks are becoming more popular in the UK you should try living in Europe where 5th November means nothing but Christmas, New Year, Queens Day, Bastille day and any other day you care to think of is celebrated with fireworks both privately and in public and we do not seem to have the problems that everyone is talking about here.

If my local corner shop started selling hand grenades then the local community would be horrified and call for them to cease. Why? because despite all the best legislations and policing, minors would still get hold of them!
It is no different with fireworks. They contain gunpowder and therefore are explosives, dressed up with pretty colours.
I'm not against fireworks at all, we take our children to see them. I am however, appalled at the month long tirade of noise we are subjected either side of Bonfire Night. Elderly people and animals terrified, kids messing around etc.
I appreciate that individuals may want to use them at home and I have nothing against that. I do think that it is wrong for local shops to sell them. The law should be tightened and perhaps they should be sold through specialist shops only and under permit.

Simple solution:
Require that every shop that wants to sell fireworks has to apply for a license, renewable every 5 years and a requirement of obtaining the license is to attend and pass a fireworks safety course.
Only allow fireworks to be sold during a very tight window surrounding Nov. 5th
Increase the fines issued to shops caught selling fireworks illegaly.
Make it illegal to sell fireworks to anyone not bearing a private display permit, obtainable from your local council, renewable every year and only issued once a firework safety course has been completed. Also, the organiser of said private display must plan in advance what fireworks he will use in said display and will only be allowed to purchase fireworks on said plan.
Set up a mystery shopper network consisting of both adults and children to randomly test any shop with a license. Any shop owner who sells a mystery shopper fireworks without the proper paperwork gets an immediate and permanent revokation of their license and receives the maximum fine.

my sentiments entirely,,you get the job,,i shall write to mr blair today,,and see if he can sort this law out before him and his mate george invade somewhere else
well, i'm all for a Samhain Bonfire festival. i'm quite inclined to Winter Solstice bonfires . . . . ((( nods to vix and reece and dino and red . . . . ))) i REALLY enjoy the firework display at Roundhay Park!
but . . . . i'm really not into selling explosives to any Tom, Dick or Harry! i'm really not into medicating my dog for 3 bloody months just cos some twat think it's hilarious to launch air-bomb repeaters at 2 o'clock in the morning, or 2 o'clock in the afternoon, or every 5 minutes in between! i really can't stand watching my soft as shite staffie shake like . . . uummm . . . a shiteing dog, and refuse to leave the house, for weeks on end. mad :x :x
i don't much like having my sleep disturbed by rattling windows meself! :x
much as i'm inclined to freedom of the individual and minimal legislation, being a bit of a leftie, the sooner the free sale of explosives is entirely banned, the better, IMHO!

Dammy, quick, I've gone all quivery, catch me if I faint!
Hmmmmm my brother taught me to light and throw fireworks when I was about 15, he learnt the nasty trick of a mates older brother. I've also seen bangers lit and put through letter boxes. Earlier this year our eldest of 13 was allowed bangers in France, my Dad and I taugh him tricks, I know, I'm a terrible Mum rolleyes
But if he is going to have access to fire works here then he might as well learn to play with them as safe as possible. Ian strongly objected to us teaching him but it is safer than him experimenting alone or on the streets with mates.
I would much prefer any of my kids NOT to be able to get hold of fireworks, ever. I don't see the need and going to a display is not only safer but cheaper too biggrin
