Flirting or Frustrating?

It is a difficult balance to make between a bit of fruity forum flirting and a hijacking a thread to Outer Mongolia.
Sometimes it can be frustrating seeing people bouncing banter in a thread where you wanted to make a sensible point… but let’s not forget how easy it then is to be drawn into the same behaviour ourselves when someone tips an enticing innuendo our way.
It can be entertaining if you are involved and easy to get carried away with the banter.
It can be a good thing for some newer members to see – giving the place a feel that people have actually made cyber-buddies and indeed some real life ones too (I guess a sign of hope in some eyes).
It can be a bad thing for newer members to see if it is spread all over, making it seem impossible to join in and makes some threads difficult to post in even on the original subject – as they become nothing more than nudge-nudge wink-wink post ping-pong.
In terms of exclusion, worse still can be the private joke threads. People who have met and post private jokes that others following the forum would know nothing about are obviously going to have limited contributions....yet they are a great source of laughter for those in the know and one of the reasons they may have logged on that day.
But as I said – it is easy to be frustrated by it all one minute and then find you are doing the dirty deed yourself in the next.
It's a bit of both I think and we're all guilty of it. I'd be the first to put my hand up to random and excessive flirting innocent but sometimes find the original thread is lost in it all and that can be a little annoying to newbies and forum regs alike.
Good thread PL
fancy a shag?
wink
Another nice point Polo. As an occasional poster here but a regular lurker I enjoy some friendly banter among the friends here but sometimes I see threads raising serious questions dominated by chit chat for pages at a time. Going on for too long can seem a little disrespectful to the originator of the thread, especially when their question or point hasn't been addressed. But all in all, though I don't know people here I like to see the mutual joshing that takes place.
Ohhhh I didn't realise that this thread had been re-posted after our data loss weekend!!
It's been done to threads I've started, I've done it to others. That's not to say I condone it 100% as it can ruin a decent thread or put people off of posting.
I know some members have said in the past that people should take it to PM, but that's a 'step up' in my opinion. When flirting goes to private PMs I think that is viewed by many as more serious. That's not to say that the forum flirting is only a joke. I think a good example would be if you were standing in a group of people and flirting quite happily, but then everyone left you alone with the person you are flirting with I'm sure you woulnd't feel so brave. lol It just feels safer.
Just don't moan at others then do it yourself - that's more annoying!
RIGHT !! NO BODY MOVE !
THIS THREAD IS COMIN TO OUTER MONGOLIA WITH ME

Just kidding.... kiss
Is a thread one of those carts with rubber tyres which you see on tv. Its the kind of thing I would imagine Mongolians using to tow things about.
Its a bit tough on those little ponies they use. Also yurts seem to be an efficient way of living on the move.
I'm just having a bit of general flirting banter here for anyone with an imagination. A night out on the steppes could be very invigorating.
rolleyes
I suppose Outer Mongolians are exempt from the Inner Mongolian Congestion Charge.
wink
I'm quilty of Hijacking a thread or ten - not maliciously but because I get caught up in the banter with someone else. But I'm reformed now (well, more reformed.... )
*Thinks to self - Less hijacking! *
lol
Please carry on the nauseaus bucket filling tedium of *stroke me* posts for pages on end in private. Two or three in a row I can cope with... but more than five, six or seven of each author one after the other, quoting each other then laughing and battering of eyelashes... please just stop and go to PM.
It's not like I'm going to be handing out my phone number and address to everyone who dropped me a bit of flirting via PM! lol
Why is it more serious if you're saying the same thing in PM rather than on the forum?

Veiwed by you?
Do you personally feel like this because I am curious as to why? Nothing nasty or anything like that just wondering why talking to someone in PM, maybe with a bit of a flirty nature might be seen as a 'step up'? Like I said, it's not like you're giving out numbers, emails and addresses by sending emoticons back and forth with a bit of 'ooo errrr mrs' thrown in for good measure?

By me and many others. I'll dig out the relevant threads on the subject and hopefully it might help explain my comment.
im very guilty of hijacking, i cant flirt to save my life, so at least you know what you are getting with me

You reformed.........................................no chance ;)
Personally it can get irrating when I thread is hijacked sometimes but othertimes it just lends to the whole fun of the forums.
Often the hijacking is an nice end to a thread, but if someone still has something to say, it still stands out amongst all the other points.
Most people do the odd bit of flirting and I thinkthat's only natural.
However it can be annoying when the same people do it in numerous threads saying exactly the same things.
Some threads are good for flirting e.g. The GFZ, but if there's a serious debates going on then a flirt hijack can sometimes come across as a bit rude (just like interrupting a conversation).
I personally would like to see a little bit more of a balance i.e. keeping the majority of the flirting in the flirt threads and the majority of the discussions in the discussion threads.

smackbottom Last time I offer you an nsa shag Scandal! rolleyes ;)
Good point HLB made with the interrupting a conversation feeling with some of the hijacks ( a very good point), it can feel a bit rude and out of place sometimes. Not that it bothers me so much that I loose sleep once I turn my PC off and go back to whatever (or whoever ;) ) I was doing previously. biggrin Time and place and all that....
I'm still not really understanding how talking in PM can be seen as anything other than talking in PM? dunno

I had a brief look for a couple of threads before I left work yesterday but flirting seems to be a popular topic.
Two people who I can remember making a very similar point I did are Dambuster and Goose. Maybe a new thread on this subject would be a good idea?
On reflection I don't feel particularIy motivated to find the threads that justify my comment as it is your choice whether to believe me or not. This isn't some insult to you at all, I am more than aware that I annoy some people but that's life, you can't please all the people all the time so I'm not going to loose sleep over it.
I'm not saying that I'll "Do what I like" whatever as I do respect others wishes. Yes I (and others) can get carried away but it's not the worst behaviour that goes on in the forum is it?
evil
I think the best flirting room these days is the Steam Room. Plenty of it goes on there.
And will the nice person ? who told me to sod off, via e-mail, please stand up.

Can I just add a bit to this, I wouldnt flirt with someone in a PM like I would on the forum as I think it could be taken for more than it was meant, also the other way round, I wouldnt mind anyone flirting with me or hubby in the forum but when it gets to the pm stage I think its more personal xx
