Hi peeps, family members laptop has been playing up, ive done a disc clean up and a de frag, anyone reccomend some FREE anti virus and spyware?
cheers
I use Avira (free version), Malwarebytes anti malware (free) and Spywareblaster (free).
All available for free download here
Avast is about the best free anti virus available. i've been using it for about 4 years now without any problems as its based on a much bigger corporate/server programme so you just get the basic features required to look after your pc with the bonus of using the virus engine from the big boys version
SUPERAntiSpyware is a good one. We were advised to use it by a web designer and it's done us OK so far
*Her*
I use AVG on all my computers, but I'm started to become a little perturbed with it as it seems to be heading the way of Norton and getting into more and more stuff. I've got half the features turned off now. confused
AVAST! has always had a good reputation.
I tend to have an antivirus etc running in the background, but if I have any problems I usually do a Trend Housecall along with a Spybot/Ad-aware scan as I've found in the past that AVG hasn't found problems while scanning, but has been triggered while doing a spyware scan. :? dunno
Last time I had a problem I also tried PANDA's version of housecall which seemed ok.
You pays your money, you take's ......... oh wait! redface :lol2:
Avast! along with SuperAntiSpyware (run once a week) both the free versions, and never had a problem
Another vote here for Avast. it just works and is simple to use.
The only downside for me was it didn't play nicely with my Zonealarm firewall but it's possible they fixed that now. WOuld love an alternative suggested though cos I'm on the windows one and it's sooo feeble.

still using sygate personal firewall pro and works a treat alongside Avast!
for a one time scan I'd recommend Norman malware ....removes all the nasties and cleans and corrects your registry .....for regular anti-virus I use (at the moment)avast antivirus (one of the few free antivirus programmes that allow you to schedule scans) anti spy ware ....take your pick, but I'd advise using Firefox with the no-script add-on to avoid getting any in the first place
But if you've reaaaallly got problems try this .....
I use Norton but then again I am not a skin flint. lol
I am always dubious about free things as do they work as well as something you actually pay for in the long run?
I have never had any issues with Norton, but don't think they do a free version.
Put ya money in ya pocket Browning...ya tight git.  wink
AVG, is not bad, full scan options, and you can reach it from the mirosoft web-page, and the basic version is free.

nope, you're a pillock
Norton/symantec is like a virus itself. it embeds itself in your system and slows it down with overly complex monitoring. just because you pay for something, doesn't mean its better than something free/cheaper, just ask jeremy clarkson about his rather expensive GT40. then again, you might as well stick with Norton as its easier than getting rid of it completely from your system wink
To get rid of Norton ...... ....use the freeware version do not set to stun

Cheers for the thought.
I have never had any issues with Norton. I was told to buy Norton about four years ago by a techy whizz.
I have never had any issues at all, maybe I am lucky who knows.
My choice and my money and my computer.......still what do I know eh?

 Good call, Revo Uninstaller is a good tool or try the Norton Removal Tool here
Cheers for the help peeps, all sorted.
Have used a number of freebies in the past and currently have Avast installed - regularly comes out top of polls. I also have Comodo firewall installed (another freebie). They work well together and run on Windows XP, Vista, 7.
