Free or not free?

Ello. I'm a little confused
I'm more of a, er browser really but since the change I've noticed a few people in the ads section saying they don't pay the site fees therefore disguise your email addy in any response as they can't respond....
Thing is I thought it said on the front the site was totally free...and I've never been asked for any money from here? confused

It is free...............for those who were members BEFORE the site take-over.
And will be for at least a year.
Those who have joined since the takeover have to pay!

The one year free isn't set in stone.................it may be for longer, it may be for ever.
All I know is..............the first time they ask me for money I'll be gone.................and so will a hell of a lot of others!

There was talk of being able to extend the free period but that is dependant upon certain criteria being met...
i.e. Prevolance on the forums..(being a regular poster and not just one liners either)

Does anyone know what they are charging new members for? I remember talk of charging for some additional services (something to do with webcams), but I thought the replying to ads and messages would still be free, even for new people?
I am only asking as there is not much point in us replying to ads, if the person replying can't reply. That would just waste our time.

as far as i can tell it is free to join, to place an ad & read the forums but all the rest you have to be a full member for not 100% sure on this but thats what ive worked out over the last few weeks but then the brandy has been going down rather well :P

If they are planning to charge people then just make sure you have as many peoples email addresses as possible for the day when you begger off. That way you dont lose touch with the cool people smile

A few weeks back I tried to log on, same as normal, and was directed to another site altogether, took me ages to fing this site again. WTF was all that about, anyone know?

First time back for me for yonks and yonks and I am sorry to see what has happened. I am sure enough money can be made from discrete advertising without having to resort to forcing people to pay for membership... if indeed that is what is happening/going to happen.
Have all the old names gone then?

Maybe you mis-typed the address? dunno

I know there are a few places you end up if you miss a letter or whatever. Someone said a while ago they'd typed in (missed out the G in the middle) and they ended up elsewhere. Common practice among webmasters ;)

I just tested this by quickly setting up and then closing a free account. Sadly new members cannot do anything, they can't even reply to our messages. I am really annoyed, as this is not what was promised by Martin & Co shortly after the takeover. We have sent loads of replies to ads, when the recipient cannot respond. Why is this not made clear on the front page of SH and what will we do in 12 months when the freebie runs out.
I know the mods are fed up with people moaning, but this is not directed at them.
