I've Googled, been on the BBC web even looked at DirectGov (that's desparate for you) and been on any number of 'environmental' websites and I still don't have an answer to the question - - -
How much gas would I expect to use heating my 4-bed house and water? I've had too many estimated bills and I have NO idea how the 61 I used Jun-Sept compares with the 280 (!!!!!) that seem to have been used in the last month.
I hope I just read the first reading wrong in June - otherwise I may have a leaking meter. Any ideas?
God knows.
My gas bills have been so huge I've switched to a pre-pay meter.
I only have a titchy 2 bed terraced and we only use 3 radiators and hot water!
I had all the appliances and boiler checked and the meters were read and re-read and I've just come to the conclusion that gas is damn flippin' expensive.
I use loads of electricity - tv, washer, computer on all day long, electric shower (and I'm there for aaaaages!) yet my new meters show all my pennies are going on the gas.
Turning down the thermostat for the water and rads just a couple of degrees can make a difference. You can get room thermometers too. Might be worth seeing if you've acclimatised yourself to a too-hot house, ya know?
Good luck x
The average gas useage for a 3 bed semi is about 2500 KWH.
Mine was 3694 KWH last quarter (91 days) for a gas bill of
My expected bill next quarter is -
All heating/cooking is gas.
Electricity is about per quarter.
You need to start a daily "log" of gas useage, and pay attention to periods when you are out. Check there is no possibility of a dual installation. IE: next door being on the same supply but after your meter.
Oh, and British gas have a quaint payment system where you pay nearly double for your gas for the first 1127 KWH. So, if you're using 2000 KWH you'll pay about per KWH for the first 1127 KWH, then per KWH for the rest.
wow i wish it only cost £30 or even £45 a month to heat my 4 bedroom house ........... i am on a meter and put in at least £30 a week at the moment but the heating is on all the time in the really cold weather. and the only other gas aplience is the hob. i put in about the same in the electric meter. am only on sick pay with tax credits and most of my cash is on the fuel at the moment am really struggling but got to keep myself and kid warm. so i make do. no leaks as the meter is new has been checked.
cardigans... jumpers, thermals... and a hat
works for me
lp
not sure but my quarterly bills were
£65 dec - march ish
£23 march - june ish
£46 june to sept ish
that is for a fairly largish 3 bed semi gas hob and oven (which is on atleast twice a day), 10 rads, water is on constant and heating is on constant ( controlled with thermastat}which i think is quite good
when i had the heating and water on timed it seemed to use alot more becaue the tank goes cold and takes more to heat than if its on constant (so said a gas man and seemed to work for me)
however my electric is another matter i have a pre payment meter and at the min im used £25 a WEEK yes thats a week  electric fire which is never on dishwasher washer dryer fridge freezer and chest freezer all A rated electric shower which is only used maybe twice a week seems the more careful i am the more i use??
Im on a pre pay meter...and cos I have the kids are home now cos of school hols I have to have the heating on....Im going through £10 of gas near enough every 2 days.....sumtimes tho...we do have to wrap up warm cos I just cant afford it..I know when you have a pre pay meter..u have a charge put on..however I cant afford the quarterly gas bill...this is the only way I can budget and at least this way...I know ho much Im using and can monitor it..whereas if I was on a normal gas meter...I dont think I would take so much care
i was paying far more than £30 per month gas for a 3 bed large terraced house with 11 radiators ..... combi boiler so only heated water as needed but wen its cold its more economical to keep heating on low all the time and just boost it wen ur home .... no shower so we all had baths .... gas cooker ...gas fies but not used ....
I am in the middle of a power struggle between Npower and Scottish Electric at the mo...
I am on pay meter for both gas and electric... basically there people have been round my door trying to sign up people to each others bits......
It got to the stage where I complained to each of the companies, because each was telling untruths...
So as Blonde said, Check out the Uswitch website... at least they give you impartial information and I made a reasoned decision from there......
i have a six bed, three floor house, with 15 radiators. i keep my heating on two notches on my combi boiler which seems to keep my house warmish all the time. i use no less than £45 a week gas,tho i got to say my shower is on 4 times a day, the bath run once a day and the cooker on for meals and baking throughout the day, but still use less than i did when i turned the heating on and off all the time. i switched from npower to edf energy and really did benefit. my electric is £20 a week, which for the size of house i live in and the fact every bedroom has televisions, dvds, computers, lights etc then i think thats not bad at all. also by keeping my heating on low i dry my clothes on them rather than use the dryer, which keeps the electric down too.
they have a stay warm scheme around here, i'm sure you would qualify..........runs
