I've Googled, been on the BBC web even looked at DirectGov (that's desparate for you) and been on any number of 'environmental' websites and I still don't have an answer to the question - - -
How much gas would I expect to use heating my 4-bed house and water? I've had too many estimated bills and I have NO idea how the 61 I used Jun-Sept compares with the 280 (!!!!!) that seem to have been used in the last month.
I hope I just read the first reading wrong in June - otherwise I may have a leaking meter. Any ideas?
God knows.
My gas bills have been so huge I've switched to a pre-pay meter.
I only have a titchy 2 bed terraced and we only use 3 radiators and hot water!
I had all the appliances and boiler checked and the meters were read and re-read and I've just come to the conclusion that gas is damn flippin' expensive.
I use loads of electricity - tv, washer, computer on all day long, electric shower (and I'm there for aaaaages!) yet my new meters show all my pennies are going on the gas.
Turning down the thermostat for the water and rads just a couple of degrees can make a difference. You can get room thermometers too. Might be worth seeing if you've acclimatised yourself to a too-hot house, ya know?
Good luck x
When was the last time someone read your meter?
No-one can tell you the average for a 4 bedroom house because there isn't an average. It depends on your appliances, your supplier, how big the rooms are that you are trying to heat and how good your insulation is.
If it is an estimated bill and it is too high, ring your supplier and ask them to change your EAC as it is too high! Give them your current reading.
Good luck sorting it out kiss

I read it today 18884 - last June it was 18500 (but I suppose that could be wrong.) EDIT : I'm going to start reading it on a daily basis for a while - then monthly at least.
Hmmm aclimatised to a warm house?
Thermostat at 18 max, normally 16. Heating/water on 30 mins in the morning and 2 hours in the evening. An extra hour if you can see your breath in the sitting room.
Gas hob, electric oven.
They want to increase my monthly payments by 50% and I need some ammo to argue my case for keeping it at £30. I changed suppliers to reduce my bills - not increase them ffs. biggrin
Jeeez! that is a lot then!
maybe see if they can calculate your meter reading against the last one (reading not estimate) and all payments made in that time.
Bit of a chew on but worth it to save some money, eh?
I'd definitely get your boiler and appliances checked too, just in case. I had a massive leak a couple of years ago and we're lucky to be here .... strange, though, my gas bill was lower then than it is now. confused
Like you say - keep an eye on your daily useage as well.
Oh - and kick ass! wink

The link above might help! kiss

The average gas useage for a 3 bed semi is about 2500 KWH.
Mine was 3694 KWH last quarter (91 days) for a gas bill of
My expected bill next quarter is -
All heating/cooking is gas.
Electricity is about per quarter.
You need to start a daily "log" of gas useage, and pay attention to periods when you are out. Check there is no possibility of a dual installation. IE: next door being on the same supply but after your meter.
Oh, and British gas have a quaint payment system where you pay nearly double for your gas for the first 1127 KWH. So, if you're using 2000 KWH you'll pay about per KWH for the first 1127 KWH, then per KWH for the rest.
wow i wish it only cost £30 or even £45 a month to heat my 4 bedroom house ........... i am on a meter and put in at least £30 a week at the moment but the heating is on all the time in the really cold weather. and the only other gas aplience is the hob. i put in about the same in the electric meter. am only on sick pay with tax credits and most of my cash is on the fuel at the moment am really struggling but got to keep myself and kid warm. so i make do. no leaks as the meter is new has been checked.
cardigans... jumpers, thermals... and a hat
works for me
lp
not sure but my quarterly bills were
£65 dec - march ish
£23 march - june ish
£46 june to sept ish
that is for a fairly largish 3 bed semi gas hob and oven (which is on atleast twice a day), 10 rads, water is on constant and heating is on constant ( controlled with thermastat}which i think is quite good
when i had the heating and water on timed it seemed to use alot more becaue the tank goes cold and takes more to heat than if its on constant (so said a gas man and seemed to work for me)
however my electric is another matter i have a pre payment meter and at the min im used £25 a WEEK yes thats a week  electric fire which is never on dishwasher washer dryer fridge freezer and chest freezer all A rated electric shower which is only used maybe twice a week seems the more careful i am the more i use??
Im on a pre pay meter...and cos I have the kids are home now cos of school hols I have to have the heating on....Im going through £10 of gas near enough every 2 days.....sumtimes tho...we do have to wrap up warm cos I just cant afford it..I know when you have a pre pay meter..u have a charge put on..however I cant afford the quarterly gas bill...this is the only way I can budget and at least this way...I know ho much Im using and can monitor it..whereas if I was on a normal gas meter...I dont think I would take so much care
i was paying far more than £30 per month gas for a 3 bed large terraced house with 11 radiators ..... combi boiler so only heated water as needed but wen its cold its more economical to keep heating on low all the time and just boost it wen ur home .... no shower so we all had baths .... gas cooker ...gas fies but not used ....
Here's a laff for you then!!!! lol
Im on a prepay meter for both my gas and electric.. both with Powergen.. Well untill last week!
A cpl of months ago i got a letter from them saying they owed me X amount of £, sorry cant remember exactly.. then the next week i got another letter saying I owed them £168!!!!
I rang to see what was going on and they asked for a meter reading. On giving it to them i was told that when the prices changed my card hadn't update and so i now owe them the money!! And i could pay it bk weekly by them taking an extra £1 on top of my weekly charges. Becasue i didn't have the money to just pay it out, i agreed.
Anyhow, for the last 2 weeks ive heard it advertised on the local radio that British Gass are cheaper than Powergen blah blah blah..
Last weds i got a knock at the door from british gas.. where he went through everything with me.. He checked my meter to find that Powergen was taking £2 more off me a week and not the £1 agreed!!!
If i put lets say £10 a week on my elec meter, im actually only getting worth of electric!!! No wonder i keep having to buy more before the week is up!!
Needless to say, i have now changed to British Gas where if you put £10 in.. you get £10!!
I would suggest that people check out the prices what there being charged and get regular checks.
My gas bill's are shocking!, I cringe when I know it's due, we're talking for a quarter for a 3 bedroomed semi. The lady in customer services when I queried the bill asked if I had "high ceilings" - it's a new central heating system so god knows where it's coming from sad
I am in the middle of a power struggle between Npower and Scottish Electric at the mo...
I am on pay meter for both gas and electric... basically there people have been round my door trying to sign up people to each others bits......
It got to the stage where I complained to each of the companies, because each was telling untruths...
So as Blonde said, Check out the Uswitch website... at least they give you impartial information and I made a reasoned decision from there......
Please don't pounce on me, but I work in the Industry.
Not for ANY Supplier but for a MOP/DC/DA! :scared:
It really depends on where you live and who your supplier is.
Cheapest in the NE is Atlantic for Gas & Electric
Cheapest in the NW is WPD for Gas & Electric
Others might offer you cheap to start contracts but once the honeymoon period is over you pay more than the old recognised supplier in that area!
I am going to hide quietly in the corner now bolt

i have a six bed, three floor house, with 15 radiators. i keep my heating on two notches on my combi boiler which seems to keep my house warmish all the time. i use no less than £45 a week gas,tho i got to say my shower is on 4 times a day, the bath run once a day and the cooker on for meals and baking throughout the day, but still use less than i did when i turned the heating on and off all the time. i switched from npower to edf energy and really did benefit. my electric is £20 a week, which for the size of house i live in and the fact every bedroom has televisions, dvds, computers, lights etc then i think thats not bad at all. also by keeping my heating on low i dry my clothes on them rather than use the dryer, which keeps the electric down too.

maybe he means the warm front grantsavailable to some people
Thanks for all the info - and letting me know it could be worse.
I keep my old bills (apart from a couple of quarters that have walked) and it looks like they are over estimating for the future usage by about 25%. I reckon I will end up overpaying by enough to claim back a little bonus in time for my holiday biggrin
I'm reading daily and using between 3 and 5 cubic feet a day (about 94 to 157 kWh). Not sure if I would save much switching to all day on low as I have it on low for the 2 periods I have it on morning and night. But while we are home all day I may be kind and put it on an extra hour or two :D
they have a stay warm scheme around here, i'm sure you would qualify..........runs
