As seen in El Reg:
"Universe very big: official"
 :eeek: rotflmao :rotflmao: :rotflmao:
Let's be honest - did anyone seriously think it was anything other than BIG?
Was that a govenment survey or an EU research discovery?
Love this site you learn something new every day cool
Ahhhhh now we are on the very subject of conversation that always amazes me. We talk about this at some point when camping for the weekend, usually very late at night and with much wine consumed confused
How big is the universe. Compared to our size it's bluddy massive - but this universe we talk of could be minute to something else. The componants that make up the nucleus of a cell probably think its universe (the actual cell) is the most massive thing that exists. Could our universe just be a tiny componant making up something bluddy enormous - do we live in something like a little woodworm hole in a giants chair?
Shit, can't believe I'm saying all this when sober, even more amazing, I actually (if vaguely) remember the pissed camping conversations  .... Doesn't make much sense does it? ...... Trust me, sink a load of booze and it's like one of those magic eye pictures - suddenly becomes the most fascinating thing ever for a couple of hours :lol2: Bluddy government surveys - they should just listen to me for 20 mins on a Saturday night
Oh dear - I've just had a thought. The last persons world I put to rights was poor Artis farming world at the Mids munch
He seemed to leg it from SH pretty quick after confused :?
But it made perfect sense to me at the time dunno

Its all relative...and once they get involved there's normally a will...and where theres a will, theres a way...The Milky Way...I think
how can we quantify something we know nothing about? We talk of the universe as if it were a football, something we can see completely and universe milarky is a bit vague for me,(and a bit mind bending if i'm honest)

I agree...scientists can only base their results on what they have had experience of...I say to them...if you can imagine a colour that no man has ever seen and show me that colour...then i will believe what you say. Until then...anything can happen...and probably will!

Grass is Green in white light. So your average blade of grass sits there in lovely sunlight, reflecting all the yellow and blue light into our grateful eyes.
So what happens to all the red? Does is stay in the grass? so why doesn't grass turn red over time?
Is the green we really see the colour that grass is - or the colour that it is not?
And what about in the dark? is grass red or green when the lights go out?
"In the lab Gnarsh contemplated the results of the experiment. The small blue-green ball floated near the lamp, amongst the hoardes of other experiments. This had been by far his greatest failure. The infestation of parasites was compleatly out of control. Several times he had tried to eradicate the infestation, by heating, freezing, even careful sand blasting. Each time the bugs had returned worse than before. It had not been too bad when the infestation had been limited to this one experiment, but now the disgusting little creatures were threatening to leave and infest other experiments. Even the culture medium was beyond salvation, so contaminated was it. There was nothing else for it but to terminate the whole sorry mess and start again. "At this rate," he thought " I will never graduate" With a sigh, he reached over behind the round yellow lamp and flicked a switch to OFF.
Feeling totally pissed off, he decided leave sterilisation until tomorrow - he deserved a beer "I Hope the GFZ is open!"

Hate to do this to you guys but the thread was supposed to be humour of a sorts...
That's why the shock horror smilies where underneath.
If you read the article, don't bother, some scientist has discovered that the Universe is much bigger than previously thought.
What I really want to know is why 42?

Unless the universe is a constant size - and everything in it is shrinking
Since DNAs untimley death we will never know why 42 . Anyway , the relative size of the universe has no meaning , it's singular by defintion and cannot be compared to anything else . I could say a lot more but I don't want people to start avoiding me !
