On Sunday 1st October I will be taking part in the Great North Run (again!) and although it’s individual effort that gets you round the course, it can only be done with the right sort of support team behind you. I mean, just look at the pit crews that help the Formula 1 drivers. The driving is only a part of the whole package, as is the running of the race. It’s the preparation and support before, during and after, which makes the difference between a good race and a bad one.
So this year I am looking for my own ‘pit crew’!! :bounce:
I’m looking for real and virtual offers, so you may need to get your thinking caps on!
Some positions have already been filled, but there are still vacancies for other posts.
Suvvern Division:
Chief Executive for overall support, nutrition and training – My lovely Sarah.
Who drives me out into the middle of nowhere, bundles me out of the car and drives off, forcing me to run home!!
Provider of food and hot baths and hi vis safety vests to prevent excuses of ‘it’s too dark to run tonight!’ (I couldn’t do it without you, my lovely!)
Apres run massages giverer – vacant position.
I know for a fact I will be feeling very sore after the run, so on my return to the ‘sarf’ I need proper massages to help my weary muscles. Anyone within a 30 mile radius who believes they have the requisite talents are welcome to apply. Must supply own oil!
‘Pull up a sandbag and swing the light’ technician. – Vacant position.
Someone to have a drink with to listen to my stories of how the run went. Must be able to nod at the right moments, say things like ‘wow, really?’ and ‘did you beat anyone famous’, etc, etc, at the appropriate moments!
Norvern Division:
Chief Executive for Sustenance and accommodation – the lovely Jags :jagsatwork:
Proven ability to motivate me to run (threatens cold water!!)
Generously offers to accommodate me, purely for gifts of WINE (did I mention that before?)
Experience of Norvern culture, beer and curries (and the odd sip of wine for medicinal purposes only!)
Transport Director – Bloke and Mr Bloke
Have you ever tried to get out of South Shields at the end of the race?? :scared: It’s an absolute nightmare! Basically you run into a cul de sac caused by the river Tyne, the North Sea and most of the roads closed for runners. The only escape is travelling south and drive around the area before you head North again. As there are 50,000 runners you can imagine the traffic chaos at that time – unless you plan ahead and book your escape route on a motorbike, like me!!
Various cheerer onnerer posts – vacant positions
The course is 13 and a bit miles long and although there are one or two members of the public along the route, there is a definite need for extra support, especially from about ten miles onwards with custard creams and ice pops. These are all nutritionally good for the runner and helps keep the motivation going to the finish.
Now it’s your turn. You can either apply for the current vacancies, quoting relevant experience, or you can come up with a new post and explain why you believe you would be good at it. Remember, these can be real or ‘virtual’!
The fun starts here!! :bounce:
