Just for information the resord so far is seven answers to any one going to bed question ( not counting sarcasm and the end bit where it wanders off topic)
So I was sitting in the traffic on the way home listening to a facinating ( if slightly pretentious) debate regarding genetic engineering and the predetermination of babies gender or worse hair/eye colour etc. Dont worry its not a genetics question , as I dont believe SH is quite the place and it would be just a tad off topic.
It got me to thinking though . As always the programme had guests of both opposing views - and equally as always one of the prevailing ways that the 'pro' guests argued their point was that the subject was becoming more and more popular and less and less stigmatised . It often irritates me that people use this kind of non-arguament to try and stress a point . Then I got in and read a couple of the more serious threads recently on here and I saw a similar kind of justification used very commonly in many of them .
So my question is as follows . Just because a practice in society becomes more common and less criticised by society in general - and enough people start to indulge in the practice , whatever it may be, does it make it right ? Or does it just make it acceptable ? Is there a difference between something being enjoyable and desirable and something that simply doesnt make sense ultimately for our welfare as individuals or as a society ?
