What about the talented Slash in November Rain (Guns n Roses) or Child in Time - Deep Purple.
There are stacks more ... Yngwie Malmsteen, Journey, Dio
I really couldn't pick one
Well bluddy hell give us a chance! You've pinched the first two that came to my mind (Skynyrd and Slash).
Errm - let me think....Red House Jimi Hendrix just for the overdubbed phrase, which is pure orgasmic expression - the rest of it is classic Hendirx blues call and response.
There's more - I'll be back!
If you have access to a file server ..... d/l Yngwie J Malmsteen - Magnum Opus Overture 1622 or same artist but a track called Fugue ....
He's a rock guitarist who specialises in classic music .. and man can this guy make a guitar sing ........
Santana - Samba Pa-Ti
Or the 10 minute overture on Floyd's Wish You Were Here album - best listened to floating on a li-lo half a mile out with the loudspeakers on the beach (which is how I first heard it - amazing sound)

I'm with you there Ice ~ big Floyd fans here
First yes Santana rocks thats not in doubt but never really got the whole Pink Floyd thing.
Chris
Hmmmmm..... there are loads, but one that always springs to mind is the Love Sculpture / Dave Edmunds / seven-minute breakneck version of Khachaturian's Russian classical piece “Sabre Dance”, which was originally recorded for John Peel's 'Top Gear' radio show (Sabre Dance/Think Of Love (Parlophone R 5744) 1968) .... IMHO
Not exactly a guitar more of a fiddle but what about Devil Went Down To Georgia by The Charlie Danials Band.
sorry to be boring but im more for drum solos ie ginger baker etc
I agree with Ice about Santana's "Samba Pa Ti", and I would also like to put in a word for Dire Straits' theme from "Local Hero".
Mike.
u good people probably havnt heard of them but jah wobble or bill laswell are awesome on bass guitar

Another vote for Dire Straits, but in this case, it's for Money For Nothing. Or Lady Writer, or Sultans Of Swing, or... well, just about anything they've done. Mark Knopfler is a guitar god.
What about the spine tingling solo by Gary Moore on the fantastic song Parisian Walkway
it always gives me goosebumps.

Rush's Tom Sawyer - The most fantastic drum solo ever belted out on a set of skins!
Silky xxx
Seeing as Ice mentioned Floyd. I think Dave Gilmour's solo in Brick in the Wall is a classic counter to the rest of the song. Only trouble is all the ignorant DJs fade it out just as he starts - Bugger!
sorry for me riff wise its gotta be jimmy page...anything by pagey!!! and solo wise its stevie ray vaughns version of superstition!!1 blows my mind everytime i hear it...

That's so f***ing cool man! Ice, high five!
For me though the solo by Brian May in the middle of "Father to Son" by Queen (off Queen II) is ace! Very Hendrix off the wall kind of solo.
LC
Got to agree with hillage! jimmy page remains the best, no one can compare :P
Fantastic guitar solo's move in mysterious ways , and one of the greatest crop up strangely in Michael Jacksons 'Beat It' . Mr Edward Van Halen really rocks the old perverts album . If you cant believe it dig out yer old copy of thriller and listen again .
G
Failing that and without boring you with my scratchy old blues albums , my own personal favourite would be the long version of Gary Moores ' Parisien Walkways' awsome in every way .
Not exactly a solo....
But the "dueling banjos" from the film deliverence
Diddle di di dang de de... etc, lol.
And, I cant remember the title or artist, the song with the liriques "I remember paris in 49, little on chately, portly wine...." great bending of the strings on that one... and one of the longest feed back wines ever on the live album as it goes into pure feed back for at least 2 mins just gently bending the strings to change the feed back pitch.

Hi Jon, That's "Parisian Walkways" by Gary Moore - already mentioned by Jumptoit further back in this thread. So that's two votes!
Mike.
I think parameters need to be set when discussing this topic
The best solo - does it have to be the most technically proficient piece of guitar work? If so, that would rule out the commercial sounding stuff like Eddie VH's work on Thriller and Slash on November Rain.
For me, 2 extremely overlooked guitarists are Prince and Frank Zappa. Prince can play 27 instruments proficiently - hisguitar work in live concerts like Sign O' The Times and Lovesexy is amazing. Eric Clpaton once said he jammed with Prince and literally couldn't keep up with him.
As for Zappa - he could also do things no other guitarist could.
The guitar solo in Sultans of Swing by (yawn) Dire Straits is quality.
But I have to say - Jimmy Paige rules!!!!!
i have been reading the thread... and how comes no one has mentioned the greatest of all time....Jimi Hendrixs......
His version of the "star spangled banner" has to be up there........

Mike.
