Hep C is actually a bigger risk and lives outside of the body (veins) for 3 months. It is also potentially fatal eg. if you don't respond to the long laborious treatment options.
Simple things are useful for reducing risks :- USE CONDOMS... (in edit- ) if you are going to brush your teeth ensure you Brush your teeth 20 - 40 mins prior to giving oral sex to anyone regardless of gender or sexuality. If doing bukkake.. make sure that the semen is not anywhere near broken skin. Wash throughlyafter sex. The list goes on.
If you keep yourself safe from Hep C, which is the most easy to get, then you are theoretically keeping yourself safe from all STI's.
and before anyone says anything I am well qualified to give out advice on this particular subject.
On a similar note we were told not to floss your teeth even the day before, so we always do it two or three days before and let the gums heal in case of any bleeding.
On the teeth brushing front, we brush usually at least 2 hours before we play (flirting time gives a good space to most mmeets anyway)and never take toothbrushes for last min brushes
All makes sense but very few people seems to know about it, s spreading the word can only be good and if jst a handful of people trot off to get their Hep jabs then all the better.
I believe that anyone who is sexually active should get themselves checked out at least 1 a year. Even if you're in a monogamous relationship.
I know it sounds bad but you can never be 100% sure that your partner has been faithful. It's not as if it costs anything, plus its a good time to get some flavoured condoms for free!!!
In the world of swinging it just makes sense to get yourselves checked.
Has anyones else GUM Clinic stopped making you sign the insurance waiver before the blood test? My clinic used to make you sign a doccy stating that you understand if the AIDS test comes back positive you won't be able to get insurance. The last couple of times I haven't had to sign it. Maybe that because I always use my real name and they can see that I've already signed it though.
I don't have insurance but if I did, I'd give a false name to the GUM clinic (which you can) and lie on the insurance forms.
You've started quite an interesting thread Chaos - well done. Yes I regularly go down and get tested - around every 6 months or so -- its worth it to know that you are less likely to pass anything on to your friends.
I also have had the hep B vaccination -- 3 jabs a week apart in my case - (I don't think they have one yet for hep C )
It's worth noting that although the viral diseases ( HIV etc) don't survive well in the environment of your mouth, some of the bacterial ones do (gonorrhoea for example) and unless you are using a condom for oral as well as penetration there is always a possibility.
Lastly -- If the government get their way -- ALL your medical records will be available online to "Authorised people" -- which would include your local council, Social Services, and police as well as the obvious medical ones -- although I'm not sure if GUM clinics would be exempt - anyone know ??
there is a scheme called "Fastest" which run clinic in many towns and cities... they do a complete and thorough screening without you needing to go to an official GUM clinic, this is done without the need for a name and address...
Its run by the Terrence Higgins Trust and offers all the couselling etc you get from any GUM clinic, they are seeing more and more people coming to them for privacy reasons and state categorically that they will not share any information about you with anyone without your express permission.
