Just read the issue of bareback and it did get me wondering if people here did actually go the old clinic just to get a checkup. Obviously some things will be obvious (i guess) but others maybe not so.
Thoughts?

Not really sure what you mean. Do you mean do people only go to a clinic is something isobviously wrong ( itching, redness etc ) or dopeople go to clinics even when there are no obvious symptoms?
As for myself I get checked from toes to my eyelashes every six months. Not because I am a slapper ( do NOT even comment ) but because as a woman and with all the little problems that go with being a woman it just makes good health sense.
Folks use sexual health clinics "just to make sure I'm OK" - which is wholly wrong. If you think you need to be checked, then there's every possibility that you're NOT "OK."
Even regular check-ups are NO substitute for safe practice in the first place. By the time you have the check up then it's either already happened or it hasn'.
Too often I find that the general attitude to risk-taking can be all arse about face when it comes to understanding just exactly what the risks are.

I agree. I hope you didn't think I was implying I get checked by my doctor because I "think" something is wrong, as that is not the case. I go because as a woman it just makes good sense. I have gone through the dreaded C and even though that is quite obviously not an STD ( or whatever its called over here ) it made me very aware of the things that can thankfully be found in time with regular check-ups.
Having said all that though .. none of us really know for sure that we are safe if we have EVER had a momentary lapse of sanity and not played safely because as you are all aware, from due to being what I hope are sexually educated people, certain things CAN lay dormant for quite some time or even always be dormant and you can just be a carrier. I am not a doctor though so please don;t ask me for exact details. lol.
Prevention is better than cure.

LOL! OK, OK - Touché!
So would you like to do the checking then...?!
innocent
I am lucky enough to work within walking distance from my regular well-women clinic. I do get checked between every 3-6 months.
There seems to be this myth that if you practice safe sex that you shouldn't need to get checked. The only way to be 100% safe is not have sex. Condoms and dental damns are not 100% foolproof and there are other STD's like genital Herpes that can be passed on even if you are having protected sex.
Maybe I should say this bit in the 'bareback' thread but if you receive unprotected oral sex from somebody that has got an almost invisible cold-sore, you could end up with Herpes, which can be serious.
Practice safe sex and get checked, not just one or the other.

(Mmm ok its only a joke)
We too get a health check very regular but thats not the same as being checked for some sexually transmited stuff so were led to believe.. only a thorough screening at the clinic can do that.. shoot me if I'm wrong.

Just wondering what others think,
John

I think . . . . .
It highlights the need to be almost on first name terms with the staff at the clap clinic due to having regular checkups, and the strength of character to inform people you've had unprotected sex with if you catch a dose.

Having had a very real health scare earlier this year ( here ) I hope everyone is now aware of the new "teenager's clap" Chlamydia that can be present with no symptoms are signs at all

Obviously there is no subsitute for practicing safe sex, but it is also important to be checked reguarly. If you have ever had sex, then there will be a possibility that you are not OK - even using barrier methods only limits the risk of infection. Many GUM clinics do offer an "I'm OK" clinic - geared towards sexually active individuals who don't have symptoms of an STI and may not think they are particularly at risk. This approach is designed to encourage everyone to go for regular check ups.
A good resource for what to expect from a visit to the GUM is;
