The easiest way that we've found of blocking pop ups is to use the Google Toolbar. This is a free add on to your Internet Explorer browser bar which does a whole bunch of fancy things, but also blocks pop ups. It's currently blocked 7635 of the little swines on the computer I'm currently using. You can get it from and it installs itself without any help from you, and if you don't like it, you can uninstall it just as easily.
However, not all pop ups come from web pages - some will be delivered to your machine from trojan packages that have managed to install themselves, and will deliver adverts when you visit specific sites, such as for example. Although they look like pop ups, and act like them, they're a different beast entirely. Consequently, it's also worth getting (as others have said), Ad Aware, but I'd also get a copy (free) of Spybot search and destroy - you'll need to run both, because neither of them catches all of the beasties on your machine.
That should get rid of the vast majority of them, as long as you remember to run them on a regular basis to keep your computer clear of them, since these trojans have a habit of coming back.
Debs do you have Nortons?????
That should prevent all that sort of thing,we don't get one!
If it gets any more technical than that wait till Steve gets home im useless lol!!
ITS OK!........................... i down loaded the link that Wbb sent me!.......and its working!
Bloody things!.....its enough to put up with them coming through the post box never mind the PC!.................................. SZ!........has just blocked 10 of the little Bs.....
Take care and thanks agan for all your help!.......and i hope this post has helded others too!

Service pack 2 for windows xp adds a pop up blocker to IE ...... or just use Mozilla/Firefox browsers.

The simplest way to get rid of popups, and avoid picking up viruses/trojans from websites, is to quit using Internet Explorer and use a proper, secure browser that doesn't give a cracker a direct route into the heart of your machine's operating system. For info, see
I use Mozilla as my main browser, and only use IE for testing purposes (part of my work is web development), and it's far superior to, and much more secure than, Microshite's excuse for a browser.

I was about to suggest the same, XP also includes a firewall I believe though to be honest, I'd sooner use something I can trust so I've got Nortons Internet Security on my PC ... no pop-ups or pop-unders at all! cool
One other thing, although the current version of NIS requires a connection to retrieve the 2nd part of the license key to work, you can actually install it more than once so if you've more than one PC at home , you don't actually have to buy a second copy and it's not breaking the licence to do so.
psst ... that means if a friend has a copy, you could theoretically borrow it yourself
I quite like IE myself, though I've also got Netscape 7.1 installed and use that for any sites like online banking.
Another point if the popups going mad you may have some of the ol spyware running away in the background... Consider somthing like
