Hi everyone,
I need some tech help my daughter has put a password on the sign in screen on her new laptop and guess what she has fogot it. We carn't even get the startup menu i am struggling can anyone help or offer any help to tell me what i can do to get on the screen to reset it.
Thanks
if this is a boot password:-
you need to press F8 (dependant on the PC make) on the keyboard as soon as you start it - this should allow you to reset it via the bios.
if it's a password set on Windows:-
You will need to boot the pc from the original Windows Disks (or Boot disk if it's pre-loaded)
Where abouts are you?
How technical are you?
Its easy enough to reset a Windows password - the tool I use is the "ultimate boot cd" which is an ISO you can burn, and simply use the file system utilities to reset the admin password, then log on as that and do what you like.
Unless you have hard disk encryption or bit locker of course...
If it's a really new lappy, and she hasn't put anything on it (music, photos etc) then you can probably check the user guide for directions to reset it back to factory settings. It's usually a case of pressing an F key when it boots up to get to the recovery boot partition, but it varies from one to another.
the system is on vista home premier it didn't come with any disk so carnt reboot from disk.

Did the above and it says administration passwork clear and power on password clear is that the password? or does that mean there is no password?
on another pc download ophcrack for vista livecd

this is a cd image you burn with open and burn with nero or similar.
put the cd that this burns into the new laptop and boot the laptop from it.( this may be automatic or may need setting as first boot device or may have a boot options screen on startup of the laptop.
when the cd loads it it gives you a self explanatory menu and will attempt to find the paasorw used. ( this can take from 10 mins for a simple password to hours or not at all for a very strong password.)
Hope this helps
Ask her who she had a crush on last week, type his name...
simples. wink
from what i read its on the boot up password screen thats fun
this all depends on the model of laptop

unsure if it will work but worth a go thoe
go to the safe mode just hit the f8 key repeatedly as soon as u
turn on your computer go to safe mode and choose the administrator
from that
you can recreate your password again.
also im putting this up as its really handy to have vista recovery disks just in case you havent burnt 1 when you first got your machine
Thanks everyone for all the advice but coz i am a novice at this thing and the laptop was new at christmas i decided to send it to a friend to sort out he is a pc engineer so he will do it.
I would just like to say that you lot are the best and i am glad i have friends on here like you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
